  1. The insect may have been a moth - a plume moth https://www.insectidentification.org/insect-description.asp?identification=Plume-Moth .

  4. https://www.southwark.gov.uk/regeneration/peckham-and-nunhead/peckham-rye-station-square Not a day too soon, whenever it comes. It is a complete hole, especially the dank, dark tunnel with the cafe leading to the building itself. Take a look up and see the pigeon crap encrusted all over. How the council can have let it get to this state and still have cafes and food shops there is beyond me.
  5. There is a bin at the library end of Barry Road, just near the pub carpark. (I have no idea how much money from the clothes' sale goes to the charity or even which charity it is.)
  6. Good on you for clenaing it up. Did you ring the council environmental line - 020 7525 2000? They'll take note of it and arrange a pick up.
  7. I saw two not-so-young men working hard for the council, painting over tagging and trying scrub it away from a grille on a property on Rye Lane this morning around 7. It looked like hard work that takes time and money, money which could be being spent on oh, I dunno, planting trees or improving road junctions or providing translation services or teaching children..... One person's "edgy vibe" is another person's hard, dirty, not well-paid and ultimately wasteful graft....
  8. It's one of those thigns that, because of social and mass media, gets heard more and more and so adopted more and more. I don't like it but it is not as bad as the "can I get"! I think people don't think "oo, I am going to adopt a new way of speaking" but they do it anyway.
  9. Does a thin (about the width of a sweeping brush filament), 1 foot horizontal line about 2 1/2 feet up a ground floor wall on the inside mean subsidence?
  10. Waking to mostly empty roads and blue skies and sunshine and going to bed with just the occasional passing vehicle and soft sound of the odd neighbour locking up for the night is almost a once-in-a-lifetime event in London. It is like being in the '70s.
  11. Southwark council declared a climate emergency. LOL!! Southwark council cannot empty my dustbin <<<<< Truth to (alleged) power!
  12. I think all attempts to think about reusing and recycling are admirable and I support all those who do so. I also think it would be equally as effective - probably much more so - to not consume as much in the first place. Ditching plastic bags or containers, even on a massive scale, won't do enough to stop and then reverse climate change, which is what this is all about. Turning down the heating, driving less (or at least more skilfully), just buying and consuming much less is easier and more effective.

  16. I think the only way of not making plastic waste is not using it in the first place. That is the ultimate and is unworkable for most but reduction rather than reuse or recycling has to be much more efficient in terms of reducing the amount of energy used and therefore CO2 produced. If you - or anyone else - chooses not to cut down on the number of takeaways then the other option is to reduce another aspect of consumption (eg. petrol/clothes/food/gifts/gas/electricity) to try to offset. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/aug/19/heres-what-i-learned-from-my-privileged-western-failure-to-go-plastic-free-for-a-month is a good article that shows even the most ardent plastic-reducer will find it hard (and comments that suggest other ways of avoiding such waste).
  17. The former home for Plough DIY is to be a maths tuition centre, according to a poster in its window.

  20. There have been jersey tiger moths around these past two weeks, which I would say is very early. Also, spiders - usually linked to autumn in my book (and others') - are plentiful. Could the extra-hot weather have somehow pushed everything forward a bit? (Apples on neighbours' trees look ripe also.)
  21. It may have been foxes? Some street cleaners put the bags on tops of the bins to try to stop this. Some don't.
