  1. The collared dove isn't that, but a mistle thrush (or maybe a song thrush).
  2. Yeah, I see them - as a pedestrian (stated in my post), travelling slowly and able to stop without having to move forward several yards at speed before I do so! Sitting in a car or van could well be a different matter.
  3. No, but fines should be levied on those who don't have working lights front and rear. Too many times I see cyclists with no lights and no reflective gear, posing a danger to themselves and others. (No car, no motorbike, no cycle, just legs)
  4. Honey bees and bumble (or similar) bees plus a single small tortoiseshell butterfly in Dulwich library gardens on the apple and cherry blossoms
  5. 2 x community support officers on bikes (big Grifters) Goodrich/Dunstans yesterday afternoon - first time I've ever seen them. On cycles or on foot they are practically always in pairs - how so?
  6. Good news both for the store itself and its shoppers and staff and for the fact that hopefully work will begin soon to drag PR station into the 21st century (whilst retaining its late 19th century details, of course!). It is like Quatermass there and could be so much more inviting and attractive for everyone - trees, anyone?
  7. Some HD channels (and the odd SD) on Virgin, such as 4, 4-7, etc., are glitching every now and then. Broadband drops out often, despite having complained and received a reduction and an assurance it was fixed. It's near to Goodrich School. Anyone else having the same problem? Ta
  8. Cutter
  9. I have seen pigeion-like birds, perching about 50' up in the plane trees on Goose Green. They are leaner than pigeons and I can't see whether they have a ring around the neck, which would make them a collared dove. They fly at height to the church steeple sometimes. What could they be? (Not parakeets)
  10. You won't get rid of state schools that are RC or C of E, etc. as long as they get better results for the kids (parents, I mean). I think they should be got rid of but plenty of them are better than average so the pretending and the hypocrisy will continue because (some) people like you (not me, because I am not a parent) want at least the promise of academic excellence.
  11. Mayor Khan was on just now, saying that "middle class drug users" have to take some of the blame for such deaths (though why only that class is responsible is beyond me). It's all very sad for the family and anyone in similar situations.
  12. A large sack of fuel was outside the pub on FH Road - Telegraph? - in the rain and damp for at least one night. If they burn it without drying it there will be more smoke than usual.
  13. You could also try the by-the-minute hire cars, like Zipcar. There are a couple of others but I forgot their names. You can pick one up nearby and then drop it off elsewhere (but not all London boroughs allow this). I don't use them but am often a passenger in one (not having driven for about twenty years) and can vouch for their reliability. Also, you can collect at Heathrow, making a journey home as little as ?15 or thereabouts!
  14. Would the landlord be liable to pay damages if he knew the leak was there and that icy weather was coming? A vendor on CPR has been informed that his/hew property is leaking water all over the pavement, I was told when I rang the stage agent. It is running so may not freeze unless it gets very cold indeed but there is always the chance. Be careful out there! (It's a property near the junction with Goodrich, oppo the newsagent.)
  15. It is frustrating and somehow "wrong", though I know that the state cannot afford to pay for everyone, especially as we all live longer (though, perhaps, iller) lives. I think a penny or two on NI contributions is needed but can you see any party offering that on a manifesto? Get saving!
  16. Today I sat outside a cafe in Dulwich Village and saw two cyclists on the pavement. Yesterday I saw three. It happens and it's annoying and selfish and very, very rarely necessary. I also saw pedestrians crossing unsafely and cars speeding. It's not just one group that's acting badly.
  17. I notice that cars, when parked in bays made for several vehicles or on streets, often don't do so fairly. They tend to leave bigger gaps than necessary or refuse to park right up to the end of the bay, leaving just enough room for a motorbike. Do they fear getting wedged in or are they simply not that bothered about their fellow motorist?
  18. I feel very sorry for the barber, whose shop I have been to lots of times and where I always had a good cut and pleasant chat. And yes, "trendy" barbers are on the up - for now.
  19. I'll say it again -- try miscanthus. https://www.terravesta.com (I have no connection to this firm about from having bought its products and liked them.)
  20. I agree with Rendel. You see law-abiding cyclists (the majority of them) made up of teens, older people, parents with children, couriers and non law-abiding cyclists made up of a variety of people. If they burn a red light or ride on the pavement or without lights, it doesn't matter who they are - they're still acting irresponsibly and/or illegally. (I saw four young teens on their bikes go through a red light, all without bike lights, the other evening. Surely their parents must know that their bikes haven't got lights. It would be horrible to think of their having an accident because they couldn't be seen by a motorist/motorcyclist.)
  21. It's good that it is getting a refit but with the same chef. It was looking tired and unappealing - that green moss on the canopy over the door was uninviting to say the least. I wish it well in its new incarnation.
  22. I've walked down the lane from the station to Nigel Road to get a bus a few times since the "bus ban" and have noticed far more "normal" vehicles - the type usually banned - than ever before. Private hire, Uber, vans, cars etc. are driving and parking. If they can, why can't the buses?
  23. More elastic bands are being dropped, I've noticed. I pick them up and put them in the nearest postbox.
  24. It needs a national law to prevent fuel being sold that isn't kiln dried or seasoned. Crap wood = crap air. Try miscanthus if you're keen to reduce the impact on the environment. https://www.terravesta.com/shop/#products
  25. I think it is reasonable to ask people to donate unwanted but usable musical instruments to a school. I also think it is reasonable to consider passing on donated items to other schools should there be too many of them. Otherwise there would be a repeat of the original problem, namely instruments being left unused when others could benefit from having them.
