Cookie, perhaps it's worth you putting up some notices to this effect around The Uplands. Someone may well have found your camera but may not know about the forum. Good luck.

I forgot to put ours out last night/this morning but have just walked up LL and noticed lots of full boxes and bags on peoples paths and in gardens. Maybe check the Southwark website? There might be an updated schedule. I hope they come tomorrow as I've got 5 boxes of empty beer bottles as a result of Superbowl Sunday's excesses.

Mick Mac, I agree with you regarding the US presidential election - the coverage on TV and in the papers made it impossible to avoid but there are no similarities between that and the coverage given to the NFL. Skysports shows a lot of games, 5US shows a Sunday night game and and the Monday night game, BBC1 shows the international series and the superbowl. That's hardly forcing it down your throat or even encouraging you to watch it. It's easily avoidable if you don't like it. There is a demand for it though, and I struggle to see why people get annoyed over the fact that it's shown. There are plenty of televised sports I don't particularly like(not a huge rugby or tennis fan, for example)so I chose not to switch on. I'm not about to challenge your assumptions that NFL is not a 'real' sport or that decisions are not made to change a game going against a team, etc etc. I like the game, you don't and I feel that trying to convert you would actually be forcing it down your throat.;-) TLS, I still don't get your point and I've just noticed a sign next to this thread that says "Don't feed the Trolls"...
-
You've typed an awful lot yet, somewhat amazingly, you've managed to say nothing.
-
Mick Mac and TLS, I'm interested to know where you get the feeling from that the sport is being 'forced' upon people or 'rammed down your throat'? How very queer indeed.

Thanks Pozzee, I may well brave the snow and venture down there. I need to buy fresh yeast, with which to make bread. Thanks also Louisa. I imagine that for SMBS, not opening is probably less of an option than for Somerfield and Barclay$. They are, perhaps, more dependent on a days takings. P.S. I do enjoy your rants.

???? Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I had a chili- dog off I read this and thought you were about to recall some sort of eating competition... Last nights chilli-dogs were a big hit with all concerned. they are the future of sporting event eating in this country. Chilli-dogs, Jugs of Margarita, Cold beers and Superbowl FTW.
-
Louisa, did you happen notice if SMBS was open?

Glad to hear you enjoyed what you saw. All I can say is 'stick with it' - the more you watch the more you'll eventually get to understand. Unfortunately the season doesn't start again until September (td) so a little patience is required. Last nights SB completely topped last year's action with the game, once again, going right to the end of the last quarter. Arizona staged an amazing comeback from being 20-7 down in the 3rd quarter to leading right up until the last few minutes. I was rooting for the Steelers (being a NY Giants fan i couldn't really cheer for a conference rival) but was happy to see the Cards pull it back from 13 points at the half to lead 23 - 16 with 2 mins to go -it made for a bloody exciting game. I was watching with (amongst others) a couple of 'newbie' friends who only turned up for the chilli dogs and beer - they are now converted fans! Hut hut etc...>:D<

Thanks for the replies everyone - I followed Dave R's and Brendan's advice and picked up some franks from the German Deli near Borough. Big Number 5 and Brendan - jumbo dogs from the street traders? Yikes. A cast-iron stomach is surely required for such folly. I remember many many years ago trying one as a drunken dare. I couldn't finish the first bite and the remainder went straight to the bin.:(

I pretty much agree with your prediction, Applespider. Other than a few highlights, I've not seen any Cards games this season so am unable to comment on them as a team (now that C5 has lost the rights to a Sunday game and Monday Night Football (6) I'm thinking a Sky subscription is the way forward for next season) but I can say that Pittsburgh have Troy Polamalu on their D line who, IMHO, is one of the best Defensive players in the league right now, and is pretty much able to shut down any offensive play. The Steelers D will win them the game.

Do they actually exist or is the idea simply wishful thinking on my behalf? I've seen a few people heap praise (and onions, Mustard, Ketchup) on Coops Hot-Dogs on North Cross Road and so am lead to believe that such a gourmet treat may be more than just fiction. I am having a Superbowl party on Sunday (as some of you may know) and have had a couple of requests for Chilli Dogs - I've no problem making a high quality beef chilli, but am slightly reluctant to slather it all over a limp, anemic-looking product of the abattoir floor. Your suggestions, please.

No need to apologise, LordshipLovely! It wasn't a dig, just it's subject that has been done to death on here in one way or another with predictable results Shop wherever you like / wherever is affordable / wherever is convenient, I say, and think yourself lucky to have the choice(tu) Good point, Jeremy. *Edited for spelling':-$

So we're arrived at the evil supermarkets vs the noble, local shopkeeper topic. Again. Can we have your opinions on supermarket van drivers that shop in small, local independent stores or, conversely, local small business owners who shop in supermarkets? They do, you know. I've seen them with my own eyes. The Bastards!

Inappropriate to use a supermarket delivery service? Whatever next? I've had deliveries from both ocado and sainsburys, never felt the need to tip drivers of either. It's not that the service has been bad - they are generally friendly and do what they say on the tin- it's just that having paid for the groceries and then the delivery charge as well, i am unwilling to pay a 3rd time.

Whilst we all know that back and forth arguing on t'internet is much like banging one's head against a brick wall, here i go again. TLS, the reason i mentioned your ignorance is thus: by jumping in here and claiming a 1 hour game would last 6 or so hours, (and doing so for no other reason than for your own amusement), ignorance is exactly what you were displaying. I now realise that you are actually very knowledgable about some things and for reasons known only to you, you were simply playing the clown. Applespider, i'll have to answer your prediction later on, i'm typing on my phone which makes it rather difficult to talk game amongst other things (at least, That's my excuse).
-
Touched a nerve did i, tony? Read it again and you'll see i said appreciate rather than understand the game. Quite different things. It is nice to to see that you are actually taking a leaf from the NFL and inserting more breaks when you post.
-
Last year's SB was a great game indeed, made even better by a Giants victory and the fact that they dashed the Pat's hopes of a 19 game run. Am typing this from my phone so can't be bothered to try and remedy the ignorance shown by TLS, other than to say it's his loss if he is unable to appreciate such a complex sport. Applespider, Steelers or Cardinals ftw?

I'm having a few family and friends over to mine for my very own SuperBash. I usually go the Sports Cafe Piccadilly Circus but am cutting costs this year by hosting something at home. Better food, cheaper drinks, comfy sofas and more room makes it a no-brainer. :)-D Slightly envious of AppleSpider heading to Bodeans though. I realise that this doesn't help you much, Natalious...the BBc is your saviour it would appear. Oops, just noticed this thread was directed at Americans in ED....*backs out of thread slowly* ;-)

I believe it is owned by Barter Inns - at least that's what www.barterinns.co.uk claims. Ted Max, I may well be wrong about this but; Perhaps SeanMacG finds it interesting that SweetShopDan is asking such a question because he -SweetShopDan - works for/runs a small, locally-based marketing company. Perhaps this is the beginning of his field work for a new client in an attempt to raise the profile of said establishment (The Uplands) or indeed the parent company(Barter Inns?) ? Incidentally and according to their website, Barter Inns also owns the very popular (at least on this forum) 'The Castle' on Crystal Palace Road and 'The Hope' in Peckham.

Or start a thread on here requesting recommendations of other butchers in the area, thus avoiding Sainsburys altogether, which is what the OP appears to have done.
