Sorry Sidhue, I don't recognise the Mortimer Variation as valid weekend play and as Branch Line edition trumps all between 02:00 and 03:00 I'm going with: High Barnet.

is now open. Popped in there last night and bought some kabanos and some russian ravioli type tings, both pretty good but then I know very little about Eastern European produce apart from Pierogi dumplings. I get the impression they are struggling for business though - the place doesn't look that enticing, due in most part to the harsh lighting which is a shame as they have a lot of interesting looking stuff for sale. Anyone have any Polish food recommendations?

Phil, sadly none of those materials you list are ideal for petanque - def not turf or shingle (check out Balls Brothers at London Bridge / Hayes Galleria for how not to construct a piste). Have never played on sand but can't imagine that it would make for a particularly good game. I've played on many different surfaces but my choice would be something similar to RedGra football pitch or crushed gravel (see Brockwell Park). According to the experts at www.petanque.org: The surface is important. A loose surface such as gravel (10mm to dust ) is preferred since its properties tend to hold the Boules back from rolling too far. --------------- There you go. Having said that, it's worth checking out The Leather Bottle pub in Earlsfield. They have a terrain which is,for the most part, playable. You might be able to pick up a few pointers on construction from the owners? -

BigPhil Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > how big does the green/Area/ playing zone have to > be > I was thinking of an area in our soon be garden > bar that's an excellent idea, Phil. there is a real lack of establishments with terrain. International rules (yes, they exist :-) ) state that a terrain for international / national competitions should be 4m x 15m and for other tournaments 12 x 3 is permitted, but to be honest it's possible to play on any scrappy little ground up to about 10m in length and 2 or 3 across. I'm on my way out for the evening but would love to discuss this with you more and have a look at the area you have to work with. Can you drop me a PM with your number on it, maybe we could have a chat face to face? cheers. -

Very good thanks, BigPhil. If you're interested we meet every weekend and quite a few week nights as soon as the weather picks up. There's usually a spare set knocking around if you don't have your own...what say you? -

That's good to know. Thanks, Wolfie. I suspect that you're just a little upset at not being able to read the whole Mrs Robinson thread. Would you like it serialised in the lounge? Perhaps a page per week to really keep you guessing? -

The former as a result of too many bland 'laaarger' pints and the latter as a result of too many carnival weekends where warm Stripe from a street vendor and a skunk spliff has sent me home from the party early.

Yes, I did actually want to be served. Perhaps that's where I went wrong, saying hello to the waiting staff instead of sitting down and beckoning them over like naughty children. -

I haven't been feeling myself lately, either, and I definitely haven't been feeling the waitress in Cafe Provencal. She was slack in the other sense. -
How do you make a duck sing? Put it in the oven 'til it's Bill Withers.

BigPhil Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > got as far as the late pre petanque > breakfast...... classic!!!!! It's very important to have a decent breakfast before attacking the piste. Calms the nerves and also helps to soak up the Ricard. Wolf - I sense you don't want this to turn into a Mrs Robinson style epic? -
I realise this is a few days after the (non) event but anyway, it's been a slow day at work... Went there Sunday on way to Brockwell Park, for a late pre-petanque breakfast. Walked in said hello to the staff and found a table in full view of the till/coffee machine bit. Waited a few mins for it to be cleared and for us to be given menus, nothing happened...went to the mens room, came back, table still not cleared, no menus. Each member of the 3 or 4 waiting staff kept glancing in our direction but avoided coming over. After 5 mins we got up and left, walked past one of the dopier looking lasses and told her we'd been waiting for over 5 mins for somebody to acknowledge us, her reply "Well I saw a tissue on your table so assumed you'd been served, oh well" and shrugged her shoulders as we walked out of the door. Has anybody else been met with such indifference from a waitress?

But Wolfy, when such a shop is criticised it threatens to destroy the very fabric of the area. East Dulwich may crumble and Lordship Lane might turn into one long stretch of curry houses and betting shops and...oh, wait..

Where are you staying in the GM?

Skiing wins. I've just got back from a week in the Grand Massif (Les Carroz, Flaine etc) - 5 skiers, 1 snowboarder and we were ALWAYS waiting for the boarder to catch up, do up his bindings, get up off of his ar$e yadda yadda yadda. DieBoardersDie!;-) Snow conditions were the best I've seen in years with inches and inches of powder even on the lower runs. Visibility could have been better and there was only one sunny day but the snow made up for that. Might be going back for a sneaky weekend in April.
