Are you allowed to drive on Rye Lane at all?

You could try and get really legal /technical ( a google search on "Peckham Rye traffic fine" etc etc will point you to a useful website) but I have neither the time nor the patience to contest this and so just gave up the ?60. Grrrr. -
I've not been to Bromley for many years. I declare that Bromley is not a patch on Croydon: Whitgift Centre, High Street, North End, The new(ish) Centraaaal a few "edgier" shops dotted here, there and everywhere, plus 2 purpose built P?tanque pistes in Ashburton park. What more could a person want? It's only a train / 197 ride away AND it also has a Tex Mex restaurant which appears to be in no danger of closing down any time soon. E2A: The most retarded pedestrians, IMHO, are those that step out in front of cyclists at the Camberwell Green crossroad. I make no apologies for any bumps, bashes or near miss induced shocks caused solely by their failure to observe the simple "Red man = don't walk, green man = walk" system in place there.

Youth Offenders move in by Goose Green Park!
Horsebox replied to Alicia's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Oh dear. This could very well signal the beginning of the end for the area. Perhaps we (the community) should start some form of protest group or petition? Has anybody contacted the local MP? I wonder if Foxtons would be kind enough to host such a petition in their ample front office (but away from buyers, obviously!)? Prospective vendors could sign it when putting their property on the market. Failing that, a wall could be erected at the periphery of LL with entrance controlled by some form of residents permit scheme. Just a thought, like. -
annaj Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > It's worth noting that every house directly > opposite or adjacent to The Castle currently has a > For Sale board up, possibly coincidence, but I > don't think so. Anna, Yes there are a few for sale boards up but to say that they are on every property is a real exageration. (I believe that many of the signs have been up for over a year and are the result of estate agents taking the piss and not removing them when the properties are off the market. We had a Ludlows sign on our building for months before they removed it, despite numerous calls it remained. Only threats of vandalism and a personal delivery service of the end result convinced them to take it down.) I actually live directly opposite The Castle - one of those Sale boards is legitimate and is actually for our flat. Not our choice but that of the landlord (poor tenants that we are). Anyway, I can't say that the patrons aren't occasionally noisy but they don't have any direct impact on my quality of life nor that of our building neighbours and I do enjoy football and Guinness in there on a weekly basis. Keef is spot on - the people that run it are very nice. I'm truly surprised to hear some body say the place is a complete nuisance. It gets my vote and would be my first EDforum drinks (by coincidence, not through laziness). Oh yeah, I walked past the aftermath of Fridays drinks I believe I passed a bunch of you on Northcross Road at about 1.30am (recognised some of you from previous forum drink photos). I was wearing a shirt with a Tiger on it. Somebody shouted out "that guy has a whole Tiger on his shirt" as i walked off into the distance. Which one of you was it? Do you remember?
-
I used to have a naf naf jacket. I guess that was kind of naff.
-
MW74, What american beers do they sell and are they bottled or draught?
-
I don't consider any of the things I like as being "naff". In fact I'm not sure I even know what naff means...

???? Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Horsebox - I have a sense for these things....... Ok. That's good enough for me. In other news, I may have to check out Inside 72 before it closes.

embellina, yes there is a gun shop. I think it's on the same block as Moxons, Franklins etc. It's more of an antique weaponry shop but calling it a gun shop has a more startling effect;-) and ????, how do you know that these places are overrated and overpriced if you have never been in them, hmmm?

Nero, Whilst you are not missing out on anything special by not going into Le Moulin (unless you count having your vegetables dished up for you, after your main has arrived as special) I wouldn't go out of your way. Come to think of it that style of service is rather special... However, I've said it before, the Guinness in The Castle is excellent, if that is your tipple of choice. Places I've never been: Any bookies Amusement arcade The bathroom/sink/tap shop Jojomamanbebeetcetc any of the greasy spoons the weird little basement shop underneath one of the greasy spoons, next to The Palmerston The Irish Shop Most of the Chemists / pharmacies The Eco Shop Speedo Pizza The Gun Shop The Mexican Restaurant Inside 72 All of the curry houses except for Tandoori nights (once - never again. Quite poor and over priced). The Hi-fi shop There must be more... E2A: Blue Mountain Chandelier Foxtons Dominos pizza All of the shops on Grove Vale, except the jerk chicken shop and the afro barbers.
-
With all that's said about the Palmerston and Franklins, I really enjoy drinking in both of them and never feel uncomfortable or that i'm getting in the way of diners. I quite often spend lazy, post-shopping, saturday afternoons/ early evenings over a few pints and the papers, and sometimes a plate of black pudding on toast (no rocket though! (6) ) Just before new year i was having a drink with several friends in the palmerston and we were made very welcome by the manager, he found us a large table for our group, despite making it very clear that we had no intention of eating there. I can't remember which famous poncey foodie said it but the mark of a good "gastropub" (i hate that word) is that you will not be sniffed at for popping in for drinks only. IME both venues pass the test on that criteria.

the old unwins, next to smbs foods, now taken (Bossman)
Horsebox replied to karter's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Since originally posting, I've been in here twice in a week now and whilst i'll still get my wine elsewhere the other drinks are pretty good - Bossman, you may remember me, it was my birthday and we bought a few bottles of champagne and some bourbon on saturday night? I've also bought a few ales from here before, quite nice they were too. A Sam Smiths organic and a bottle of somehting else from Whitstable, also organic. Two definite strengths are the late opening hours and the friendly service. Thumbs up from the Horse. -
Cassius, see my edited post, above, for my theory.
-
I also like the dog, mainly for it's ales and the small bar / room to the left as you are facing the pub. I think it used to be a billiards room, at least that's what is written on the door. @ brendan, i've no idea how some pubs guinness tastes better than others but i suspect it is somehting to do with how much is sold, i.e. the age of each barrel and the frequency in which it is dispensed, thus keeping the lines free of residue. If anybody has any factual explaination of the great Guinness taste mystery then please correct me.
-
The Castle. It's seconds from my front door, v good, cheap Guinness and it's a no nonsense, old school boozer with a quality jukebox.
-
It's not an easy journey, by any means. I've been driven on this route at about 5am and it still seemed to take forever. The easiest route by public transport is probably as mentioned above (or use LGW). To get a rough price for cab, best to call Addison Lee. Their price will probably be about ?2-3 more than local company, but they are reliable and professional. I imagine you would be looking at about ?50 minimum.

So I spent most of this morning in Dulwich Park, playing/practising petanque (French Boule), with 2 of my good friends. I was the freak in the hat, if anybody here happened to walk past and notice us. We are trying to practice as much as possible between now and July, as I've entered us into "Le Mondial de Marseille" tournament. Does anybody else play this excellent game and if so are you up for entering a team in to the Mondial or perhaps starting a local club?

Not that I know your drinking habits, Madworld74, but that's some claim. I'm not one to blow my own trumpet but I make a pretty damn decent cocktail myself, at half the price. You name it, i'll wipe the floor with the competition.>:D< What did you have? I'm really interested in this place now. If they really are that good then I may have to check it out.

I've been past this place a few times, only looked through the window, and I have to say that it's not that appealing in terms of their stock/prices/appearance. It's essentially just another run of the mill off license. Winewise, I would rather spend ?8 on 2 "petite recoltes" from Nicolas, which I know i'll enjoy, than spend ?5 on 2 bottles of something which could be hit or miss. As for the beer selection, it's quite generic and unless they do some worthwhile offers on decent ales, I'll shop elsewhere. Oh yeah, Organic wine. I wouldn't buy this just because it's organic. It has to be good. Until I get a recommendation that I can trust, I'll stick with my non-organic grape juice which I know will be tasty. -
Who cycles to work from East Dulwich?
Horsebox replied to willma's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Solo K, that sounds like a longish route to take if your final destination is Hyde Park/Marble Arch. You may be able to cut time and a little distance off of your journey by heading from DKH/Camberwell New Road towards Oval/Vauxhall and then up past Victoria Station to Hyde Park. However, you would miss out on Westminster bridge and it is much nicer to look at than Vauxhall Bridge. -
What's the most anonymous shop/restaurant on LL?
Horsebox replied to Muttley's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I didn't know that there was an amusement arcade on LL. Where is it? It gets my vote, naturally. -

I was merely using that country as an example of having taken a different approach to drug laws/legislation/control, whatever you wish to call it, and a possible benefit of this approach. Some interesting quotes there, CWALD. One of the problems with anybody in govt, policing, the judiciary etc coming out and saying that drug laws need changing, is that they tend to get vilified by the Daily Mail and the red tops and their career then takes a hammering for proposing a sensible alternative to a failing/failed system.

I watched this at Dulwich Hamlet FC. ?10 to get in. The fight was a massive disappointment but the other goings on were much more entertaining. The organisers of this evening at DHFC were a bunch of hopeless muppets: the 2 girls working the bar had never worked a bar before - they kept reminding people of this and getting over excited when they poured a decent looking pint. The guy managing the bar was useless: he didn't trust the girls with money or the till and so delayed the entire serving/payment process. He also refused to serve and even acknowledge customers. The longest I waited for a pint was about 25 mins, others waited longer. The venue was full of really moody yardie/rudeboys in string vests plus almost all of the Dulwich scumbags, one of whom could only string a sentence together if every other word was "cunt" or "bruv". He had a red face and was wearing a tracksuit. There were also a group of female strippers there, one of whom had the most awesome butt, another who asked me to buy her a drink, which I politely declined to do. After the main event, as I waited at the bus stop for the 176, the sweary scumbag (above) and 4 of his muppet friends pegged it out of the Sainsburys car park and into the Peabody buildings, the intelligible one fell over in the road and twisted his ankle (HAHAHA!), pursued by a couple of rudeboys shouting "MANS COME HERE, WHERE YOU BLOOD CLOT MANS AT?!" It was a bit of whitey scumbag vs black scumbag tension, sparked off by Hatton losing, I imagine Then in an unrelated incident 2 friends started trading punches over a torn photo. Then the police turned up at the same time as my bus, which was in fact the 185! I've missed lots of detail out but basically the evening was a shambles and turned into a bit of a scumbag fest.
