Trying to buy a house in this area is near impossible

Otta Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > The problem with right to buy was that the money > was never put back in to social housing. Yes it > was good for a kot if people, but it could have > been better for a kot more people. not saying it was perfect otta and I am sure you have a point there. but do remember that even for those who did go ahead and buy, it wasn't handed on a plate to them they still had to work and save up for it, not sure that just because it was on offer that everyone would have achieved this anyway. oh and it started under a Labour Government, not Thatcher. edited to add: sometimes this fact is conveniently forgotten. -

Always know > what's best for the plebs statists/lefty middle > class types.... quids I couldn't agree more. working class people owning their own homes, having aspirations, whatever the hell next?!! sorry to digress on this thread but you only have to see sanctimonious suzanne moore article bandied about on twitter about how disgraceful it is that her former council flat in kings x is going for ridiculous money, (London being a playground for international finance.) although she graciously (!)acknowledges that 'she's one of the lucky ones' i.e. firmly on and moved up the property ladder, er... she fails to see that she is part of the problem she's complaining about. -
the Guardian is the place to look for cheese board etiquette. one knife per cheese apparently. oh and you can use butter knifes for soft cheeses so no need to fork out for loads of new ones especially for cheese.

what's the most outrageous kid's name you've ever heard
numbers replied to Ladysaw's topic in The Lounge
There was a girl in my brother's class at school called Iona Horsefield. As a teenager, I used to babysit for an American kid called BJ. (I had no idea) For me the most cringeworthy ones are those with made up spellings, my friends ex has a child called 'Jorja'. Pronounced like Georgia. Or rather Jorjaaaaaaaaaaaah. -

Is there one for other people's children? (only joking)

Fab new novel set in East Dulwich/Peckham
numbers replied to smashing's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
but Fox those are specific example of very specialist beers, they are most definitely not your average beer prices in esat dulwich (although I do think prices are generally high but they are all over London). I have seen some really expensive beers, packaged in boxes like champagne, that can fetch up waaaaaay more than twelve quid a bottle. They are in a different league to the range you get in a supermarket or bog standard off licence or pub. Not saying that most people (including myself) can afford them, but they are there. Sometimes people like to have the choice of something that is normally out of their budget, as a treat, y'know. -
StraferJack Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Back atcha!! > > But seriously (is that another one? Oops) why the > irritation? well, its irrational so does there need to be one? really, some people I know calling their mother or mum 'mom' is just ridiculous. It's like me saying I'm just off to fix a leaky faucet. "Going forward" is really f-ing annoying too. Much used by politicians and their aides. Drives me nuts ;) PS maxxi i used to love that from neighbours (or was it prisoner cell block h?) 'rack off' 'ya dobber'.

hey there SJ, being irrationally irritated by americanisms doesn't mean that you are against language evolving as it naturally will, but thats quite a different thing. do the math, buddy! Have a nice day!
-
That drives me nuts too Jah. Don't know why so many British people were using 'mom' on mother's day either, spotted a particularly nauseating example on a friend's Facebook timeline (by his sister, not him). They are from Birmingham, not the one in Alabama.

you can get running trousers hat have a small zip pocket across the back which is perfect for keeping your keys. or use one of those sports armband things?
-
Blue - I was sending as SMS (or so I thought), thanks for that didn't know that mms wasn't inclusive. SJ - no I didn't type a smiley, I downloaded the emoji keyboard and I use that (mainly for the emojis that aren't smileys). am using whatsapp much more now but if there's a rubbish signal it doesn't work well.

aircraft noise is reaching...sky high proportions. the irish shop is closing. there's going to be a sparkling new cinema and a sushi bar. the place that Must Not Be Mentioned has not been Mentioned for ages. the Drawing Room needs a good dusting. SJ and El Pibe left for pastures new. you have been missed from the discussions (as has Hguenot I believe).

has anyone else been charged extra by O2 for sending text messages with emoticons in them? I get 'free' text messages but noticed they were charging more each month and when I queried it, they explained that whenever I use an emoticon they treat that as a multimedia message which is chargeable if I go over a limit. Wasn't exactly clear in the small print. Their adviser told me to use facebook messenger and whatsapp instead (I already do). I know I deserve all I get for using :) :)) :( (sorry if this is slightly off topic, just being nosey)
-
oh also, long shot, but have you tried finding out if there are any local forums online where there may be some residents who can remember the old shop names? (like there are on here):)
-
I wonder if you might find out the information from the local library (the one in Wiltshire I mean)? My library has an excellent local history section with loads of books that contain details and fascinating pictures of the area in past times. One of them has really detailed information on premises that were eg. maltings, mills, bakers and so on in previous lives. You might be lucky to find something in that section about the shop's name? There's also a local history volunteer who gives free talks to interested people and who also helps them to trace families from the area so you might want to ask if there's any such service like that at the library? Good luck with it, what a lovely idea for your nan's present. edit to add: I think (hope) most libraries have a local history section.

Why not narrow it down a bit KK and then it may be easier to decide? Are you after a city break? Or would you rather be beside the seaside, beside the seeeaa? Cambridge is a lovely historic city and ideal for walking around, lots to see and do. Plenty of walking tours, river tours, excellent museums to cater for all tastes, nice restaurants, cafes and bars, pretty cheap to travel to by train from London. Lyme Regis is gorgeous although I am not sure how easy it is to get to via public transport. But excellent if you like walks by the sea, cream teas and enjoy natural history.

"I'll be sad when Scotland leaves the UK, we'll both be less than the sum, but 'we don't vote for tories', is so much more powerful than 'the status quo is ok', especially when the no vote is resorting to scare tactics. For europe the benfits seem even more invisible even though they're manifest in most people's lives a great deal." jesus you think that's already decided, do you El Pibe? (this isn't directed at you) I think it is very simplistic to accuse those of not being pro-Europe as xenophobic. edited to add ""

not hugely surprised to see closure of small independent shop and tesco mentioned on the same thread.

My opinion is that neither of them are worth listening to. As for the PM and Leader of the Opposition. Just as bad if not worse. I'm not in the pro-Euro camp either* Yours disillusioned with everything. *My isn't the forum pretty dull at the moment.
