  1. It seems a little early for Autumnal recipes with this hot weather but here goes. Not a soup nor a stew but here's a cheap, easy, nutritious, seasonal recipe - pumpkin gnocchi pumpkin or squash floury potatoes plain flour semolina parmesan nutmeg butter garlic breadcrumbs sage leaves short version - mix roasted pumpkin/squash with flour and roll into balls, drop into simmering water till they rise. coat with butter/oil/chopped herb leaves/anything you fancy. long version - preheat oven, line baking tray and bake pumpkin/squash and potatoes for an hour till soft. scrape into a bowl and puree (do not use a food processor). add dry ingredients, mix with a fork. add parmesan and seasoning. roll mixture into sausage shape and cut into 2cm pieces, roll fork across top. and dust with semolina. boil salted water, simmer and add gnocchi till they come to surface. separately fry garlic, sage leaves and breadcrumbs (i always have these handy in freezer) in butter. remove garlic and cover gnocchi in butter mixture and more parmesan. lovely with wilted spinach. you can freeze them if you have made too much.

    Ice cubes

I wish I'd 'discovered' frozen bags of ice cubes much sooner. Why did I ever bother with those bloody stupid novelty pineapple, elephant and flamingo shaped trays as those fuckers never come out no matter how hard you try. You can get 'artisan' frozen ice cubes Louisa - why have bog standard filtered water ice cubes when you can have posh mineral water ice cubes in niche sizes for ?2 quid a pop instead of a pound eh?
  3. When I was younger I tried frozen mashed potatoes. It was truly horrible - tasteless beige pellets. Never again. I'd rather have Smash potatoes (showing my age here!!) The only ready-chopped convenience thing I'd LOVE to see more widely are coconut pieces for making south indian dishes.

I'm loving Sue's irrational > fear of mobiles though?:) so very true RD! think Strafersean said similar on page (OMG have you seen how many pages this has?) 100 of this thread. Most are indeed perfectly good examples of rational rage. here's my recent ones which I hope qualify (for irrational status) websites: default view is most popular or most liked - fuck off, I want to see them in price order thanks. shampoo & conditioner/liquid soap & hand cream combos - we all know that the shampoo and soap bottles run out FIRST so why MAKE THEM THE SAME SIZE. ffs

Nepotism. Always been the case wherever you go, more's the pity. I feel your pain doc.
  6. I'm drinking red wine from a tumbler. (Morrison's Signature Valpolicello Ripasso). Actually this is the second (or is it third)?
  7. if its the pub I'm thinking of, loads of politicians drink there and there's never any aggro as its a really well run pub. Just enjoy your night out with whoever you're at the pub with. If he goes there every night and becomes a regular that's different than if he is only there sometimes.

  9. Jeremy if brown sauce is your thing, M&S do a black IPA version which is bloody excellent. In fact their own brand range of condiments is varied and interesting. I've tried (and liked)smoked ketchup & (posh)hotdog relish. PS If ever a thread needed Sean this is it!

Started watching breaking bad but got a bit tired of it half way through. I am definitely getting netflix. (Alan Johnson the Post Office and me is on BBC Four now - very good) :))
  11. ???? wrote > Modern TV in choice & variety kicks ass on the 70s > - but if you disagree you can always watch one of > the Myriad 'Golden Oldie' type channels anyway I didn't know this was just about 70s TV. Anyway I do disagree and yes I do watch the oldie channels for forty year old programme reruns thanks. Perhaps I ought to get sky, Netflix, whatever else myriad of choice (of crap) is out there so I can watch box sets like everyone else. I wasn't even allowed to watch Grange Hill so I don't think I'm that nostalgic for all the old programmes.
  12. The Co Op in Southwold is nice. Local Suffolk bacon, cheeses and vegetables. Perhaps they'll model it along those lines.

Jeremy I usually find myself agreeing with you on everything but seriously, what TV is better now? (Apart from First Dates) I think I agree with Louisa on this one.
  14. Oh god that stock thing I'm glad I'm not the only one. I've watched in a kind of hazy slow motion dismay to see my carefully cultivated golden elixir going down the drain only to realise too late. Go upstairs & then not known what I've gone up for. Started doing something else then half way through that realise why and have to hurry to finish things. Cables. I have a horrendous time with these. Unplug then move a lamp or something in a room and I always unplug the wrong things. Forget to plug things back in then wonder why they're not working. Baking. I quite often just guess weights instead of meticulously measuring them out. My slapdash approach usually works but have been known to omit a key ingredient eg sugar Library. Chosen new books to read only to remember a few chapters in that I've read them. Doh.
  15. Echoing what a lot of you have said. I have never seen Game of Thrones. rahrahrah - I've never been to Manchester either!
  16. okay, this is copying the irritating marcus brigstock radio prog... what have you never experienced? I've never been in a branch of KFC let alone eaten anything from there. I've never seen E.T. PS I've seen Star Wars
  17. where are ye off to then doc? have you made up your mind yet?

Mint Choc chip (my favourite) can also have an unequal ratio ice-cream:choc chip now that I think about it.

My guilty secret is that I quite like that vinegary cheap ketchup (at times, not always). > I'd love to know of a middle ground option if > there is one. This! I thought I was the only one. Sometimes you don't want too cheap, old-skool, dubious quality yet the full on farrow & ball artisan hand reared locally sourced shtick is too far on the other end of the scale at others.

    Top Tips

Where's waynetta when you need her?! Or daizie!!
  21. I'd say Dorset (or Norfolk of course!) but closer to ED you can't go wrong with the South Downs, beautiful walks and lovely scenery, fresh sea air. Burling gap, seven sisters, beachy head.
  22. Unequal ratio of ripple:ice cream in raspberry ripple ice cream. (Premium brand to add insult to injury)
  23. Fox this is true of oysters as well. Used to be staple diet of the poor. And gin I think. You can't move for artisan types of gin nowadays but it used to be the very poor that drank in gin palaces, which were everywhere.
  24. the Barry Barry Road Race and them bears?
