  1. Unfortunately Sue, the least worst option is also at a time when due to conditions and people not wanting to join, the police service is down on numbers and stretched to breaking point. Sadly a quick win in reducing prison numbers will cause more problems then it solves I agree, they can't turn prisons around over night but with delays in the courts after covid, shorter or no sentences to releave pressure and a stretched probation and equally stretched police service then maybe there needs to be more joined up thinking rather than here's a great sound bite, we've reduced over crowding ....
  2. Sep, thank you for thinking I'm sweet but as someone who has worked with the prison and probation service I do have more knowledge of how things are. Prisoners don't sit in their cells 23 hours a day playing on playstations, there are programmes delivered to help them gain skills to get jobs outside plus if they have drug or drink issues they are offered help snd support. Now if someone is sentenced to 12 months, but gets out after 4 months then the training, help and support won't have taken effect and is therefore wasted. Yes, there is a problem that we don't have enough prison spaces or staff to run them and the question that should be asked is why the population is growing year on year. The whole system needs money thrown at it with strategies for helping prisoners from arrest right through to release and reintroduction to society but most governments (this and the last) look at short term.quick gains without focusing on thw overall issues as the costs are eye watering so as a result prisoners come out, often with no where to live, jobs are hard to find if you have a record and universal credit isn't paid for the first 6 weeks after release or enough to really live on when it is paid. Therefore a large number of ex prisoners are let down by the overall system that was supposed to help them and feel their only course if action is a return to crime especially as getting caught may result in not going to jail due to over crowding or a very short lean sentence.
  3. Rubbish What it showed was a determination to get the Tories out, any other agenda that any other candidate put forward was swallowed up by a wave of desire to get labour in. Still if you want to claim a miral victory because so called minor agendas were trampled underfoot by the stamped then I'm not going to take away from your parade.
  4. Today the Government announced the planned early release of prosioners who have served 40% of their sentence. There will be exceptions to safeguard tje public, and the releases will start from Srptember. This is just before the darker months kick in , ideal cover for some criminal activities. I'm all for correct rehabilitation and giving people a chance, but if the system is as broken as they say then will prisoners being released have had enough or the correct rehabilitation or training to give them a chance on the outside. Simply releasing them.early isn't enough, there needs to be improved probation offerings, proper offers of accommodation and work opportunities to allow ex prisoners to have a chance. Obviously there needs to be a solution to over crowding and poor conditions but unless there is a support plan in place then I fear for an increase in crime over the winter months.
  5. If they start adding 2 foot thick blast doors, time to panic remember genisys is skynet....
  6. TfL have opened a consultation on the proposed charges for the Silvertown and Blackwall tunnels https://haveyoursay.tfl.gov.uk/tc-yourview This will obviously have an impact on people living in the south east of London who need to commute to north London by car (and visa versa) plus wider ramifications for those outside of London
  7. March46, looks to me like the railing did what ot was designed to do, protecting pedestrians. The rhetoric that it is a 20mph zone is interesting as that could easily be caused by a lorry or large vehicle clipping it as it turned the corner and unless the actual circumstances of the accident are known then the speed limit is a red herring. Protection like these are normally installed after issues have occurred thete in the past so they are obviously still needed by the looks of them.
  8. There are choices in life Support local, pay a bit more and rediscover the taste of fruit and veg Support supermarkets , pay less and get bland fruit and veg that has a shelf life longer than a Tory PMs career. If you go with the first choice, then choose if you are happy with the displayed price or not. It's a bit like choosing to shop at Borough Market and getting fabulously flavoured treats, or a shopping at Daves Fruit and Veg on the corner of a street in Peckham. Both have their target customers and price accordingly, those with money to burn go one place, normal people to the other but there is a choice and if you feel you are being taken advantage off, simple things to do are 1. Talk to the retailer, it may be genuine mistake or they may need market feedback on pricing points 2. If not satisfied choose to shop elsewhere. The answer isn't to complain on a public forum because you can bet the business isn't focused on the EDF but mote on running their business, paying energy, rates and rent and after staff costs (all of which have gone up over recent years) , possibly making a small profit (which after all is the reason for running a business)
  9. Don't worry, as the new catch phrase of Kier is "it's broken*" then it will be fixed by him 🤣 * regardless of what it is, prisons, NHS, Railways...
  10. There is no problem https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/c7204p2r0dkt?post=asset%3Ad617783f-b844-4e91-b70e-c5565523bb96#post According to Royal Mail.(speculating underpinned by fijitsu)
  11. Every so 0ften a thread about plane noise pops up. Normally complaining about how loud it is over the area 🤔 It can get a tad annoying if the wind is in the wrong direction and flight paths are shifted, but unfortunately it is our (collective) doing. No one wants to give up their foreign holidays, their imported from Peru out of season asparagus, goods from the far east, business trips when zoom/teams will suffice or even quick trips up and down the country (admittedly often cheaper than the train) Unfortunately we all want to fly more, not less which means more crowded skies, more noise and often more people disrupted. I do feel for you @BrendanC and it does ebb and flow, personally I got used to it over a winter period when windows are shut and as spring summer returned, with windows gradually cracking wider open, the increase in noise became more tolerable. Hang on a few months and hopefully next spring will be better
  12. BBC News - East Dulwich voters still awaiting postal vote https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c849w09535ko Thanks @Harry Low
  13. That's the danger of quoting an "average" It is anything but as different people do different things and using one metric alone to justify things like CPZs or LTNs is flawed
  14. @Rockets did you say that the average commute by car was 7 miles? Doesn't that put in to perspective all those who have been banging on for ages that most car journeys are less rhan 3km ? Obviously there is a happy medium figure but to simply say "ban all cars because on average journeys are within walking or cycling distances" is clearly misleading. London is congested, some people like to cycle and some people need to drive. There needs to be provisions made for both otherwise London will grind to a halt.
  15. @Hen123 @malumbu let's be frank here We all agree that all road users should obey the rules, and those who don't should be prosecuted. Yet constantly you both seem to mutter under your breath that cyclusts are a special category and motorised vehicles are the sole causes of accidents (with the exception of rogue cavalry horses of course) Vehicles, proportionally are more numerous and cover more miles than cyclists so yes, proportionally they will be involved in more accidents, but that doesn't mean cyclist should be above the law now does it? So how would you both ensure all road users obey ALL the rules 🤔 And hen, stop banging you special drum about 95% of car drivers breaking the law, we've got your point but not once have you said how you would enforce the law for all road users, vehicles and cyclists alike.
  16. https://www.instagram.com/reel/C706onctOk-/?igsh=MXBsYTg2YzZrc2ppNg== We need road safety adverts like this for all road users including cyclists on pavements 🤣
  17. Therein lies the problem, cyclist think that when they break the rules it is a trivial violation of the highway code.
  18. Hen123, the point of number plates, isn't to stop accidents but to identify drivers who break the law or don't stop. By that same principle making cyclist carry them, much like motorcyclists have to, won't stop them cycling on pavements or jumping lights but may make them easier to track when they do. So what's not to like about the idea 🤔 or do you think cyclists should be somehow above the law ?
  19. Slight deviation here, but as Synnovis could be found in breech of its data protection duties and lost patient private data, will there be consequences for them and possibility of loosing the contract 🤔 Has anyone who has had their data breached been contacted?
  20. That's very sad, the food and service was always excellent
  21. Anyone know what's happening to good neighbour ? The whole chain seems to have closed, which is a shame as it was always good.
  22. Gets my vote for PM
  23. Possibly right, triggered by one of three things. War in Ukraine turning a nasty corner and Russia launching a limited nuclear strike China deciding to escalate the situation around Taiwan North Korea taking advantage of the world's political instability caused by the two events above On second thoughts, a US president going senile and thinking they are calling the presidential bottom wiper, will accidently press the wrong button 🤔
  24. Obviously the council has a time machine 🤣 Must have paid for it with all the money they make from the CPZ revenue generating machine 😉
  25. What on earth is happening in Europe ?
