National Travel Survey and cycling policy in London
Spartacus replied to Rockets's topic in Roads & Transport
Thats a great suggestion mal Whilst it is a perception, as a driver I can see why when I stop at lights and get surrounded by cyclists jostling fir prime position (lol the ones who stop at the lights that is) I personally wouldn't want to be sitting in my Raleigh sit up and beg type cycle amongst them all. Maybe the campaign should be about sharing the road, it's not a velodrome and respect the highway code 🤔 I think that will encourage more people to cycle for leisure -

Kurt, it is from conversations with friends, family, work mates who mostly believe that other cyclists are too aggressive and they don't feel safe amongst them. The issue with polls is that cyclists are mote likely to respond than non cyclists on subjects relating to cycling. The "not my thing so I won't respond" syndrome. It might get a more realistic response if it is part of a general poll where cycling is a small part so that people feel they have areas that relate to them. -
There's a report on the news today suggesting a annual charge to consumers of £17 to stop energy firms going bust BBC News - Energy bills could rise by £17 to stop firms going bust https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-67087043 This is already on top of the extra £82 to cover the costs of making sure that households were not cut off imposed in 2021. It feels like OFGEN aren't putting the consumers first and are in fact working with energy suppliers to protect their profits. One would expect and hope that in a fair world OFGEN would look to protect the interests of the suppliers by leveraging a charge on their profits to keep them buoyant rather than charging the end user more to stop their supplier closing?

The question you have to ask is "was the increase in cycling during Covid a fluctuating statistic and levels are now returning back to the normal?" Unfortunately a lot of potential cyclists are put off by what feels like a large number of aggressive cyclists who jockey for prime position at junctions, jump lights, use pavements and race anything that moves* * other forms of cyclists are obviously also available. -
Then maybe consider changing the title to remove problems as that gives the wrong impression if you want a balanced article and information

Are you looking to expose what might be teething problems or trying to undermine a new it solution ? Personally I have found it great, it allows me to see appointments via an App (mychart) and managed to see when an appointment had been incorrectly entered thus allowing me to get it corrected and saved a no show event. New systems will always have early glitches but its better than the old system that's for sure

An alternative theory is that restricted parking spaces (roll out of CPZ's for example) explains the increase in penalty charges. It feels like the council rewarding themselves with more income because they have made it harder to park without getting a charge.

It is interesting, due to tactical and protest voting during the last local elections, mainly to give the Tory party a bloody nose, we ended up with a landslide Labour win as did other councils. That's not to dismiss loyal Labour voters and Southwark is a safe Labour seat. Now as a result, the council have no real opposition or scrutiny and issues like the one are being uncovered. Whilst I'm not advocating voting a Tory MP in, I would say think carefully before the next general election because if we end up with a Labour Council under a Labour mayor with a landslide Labour government then I suspect what we've seen so far will only be equivellent to the tip of the iceberg and new policies and schemes will come thick and fast. There is always balance and scrutiny with opposition and it doesn't matter which party provides it. If we want fair schemes for all, not just a few, then we need to look at how we scrutinise our local council and officers.

Chipotle East Dulwich now open
Spartacus replied to JamesPardy55's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Its market economics, rents up, footfall down (cost of living) so chains are one of the few who can open up, possibly at a loss, able to ride the storm and looking towards the future when economics are more in their favour. As much as I love the independence of ED, its bloody tough on small businesses. -

Interesting expression "Not many have a car" According to the RAC foundation there are 33.27 million cars in the UK https://www.racfoundation.org/motoring-faqs/mobility#:~:text=In the United Kingdom%2C there, the end of March 2023. According to Statista the UK population is 56.33 million https://www.statista.com/statistics/281208/population-of-the-england-by-age-group/ Removing under 18s and over 80s to account for those that don't drive (yes I know some over 80s drive but easy maths) removes 15 million people who may not own cars. Therefore approximately 48 million people are car driving age and on average each person owns .8 of a car. (statistically speaking) Obviously its not as simple as that, some own multiple, some none and some have only 1 car in a family. However the much touted "not many have a car" is skewed by inner city residents who may not own a car and doesn't represent those further out or outside big metropolitan areas who need a car. I can therefore see why declaring war against the war on motorists would be a clever move towards getting voters confidence.

From the stories I've heard Alice, get proper insulation and not foam as that causes more problems then it's worth. My insulation is between the floor rafters and does a great job. Only thing to think is if you are going to board it out then you will need to consider some sort of lifter to take the boards above the insulation if your joists aren't that thick.

No ones angry about LTNs Mel, the anger is about how underhand this council were and are in introducing schemes against consistents wishes. Southwark were given some money to implement temporary social distancing measures during covid but seem to have used the proverb "given an inch take a mile" of parking away 🤔 As said, a central review isn't a bad thing to occur and may bring sanity back into what feels like a land grab by the council.

It always had turnstiles so one assumes never free. I just came across a report about what happened to the money from 2 years ago. https://www.peckhamryepark.org/news/2016/7/17/former-lido-site Looks like it funded a feasibility study that shows it needed 6 million to deliver but of course we were in a pandemic then and cost of living crisis now so I am hoping that the scheme will be revisited in gje future as it will be great for the area.

Why not Alice ? I there was a lido there once before
