That's the issue Malumbu, we don't live in the country, we live in a metropolitan area where commuting or travelling is part of our lives Unless there are viable , frequent and reliable public transport alternatives to get around then people will use cars as cycling and walking doesn't offer a sensible alternative to journeys over a few miles or with heavy packages. Equally think about the elderly, disabled or those with other mobility based issues Changes need to work with the population of an area, not against it otherwise they will experience heavy resistance. The council encouraged us to respond on a website yet when the majority state they are against the schemes, questions are raised over who exactly responded. Care to bet that if it showed support, there would be no questions and councillors crowing about the success of the schemes. The problem here is a lack of consultation and monitoring prior to implementation and deaf ears in the council after.

And with the ULEZ fast approaching and the drive to electric cars, there's change a plenty coming.

That's 'if' the Germans and French have enough alternative vaccines to offer to the over 65s , if they don't then it dies seem a folly of a policy.
-
It's interesting to see that as well as Germany, France has decided not to give the Oxford vaccine to over 65s. Could you imagine if we said the same, the public outcry would be deafening as over 65s are high on the vulnerable list and have a higher mortality rate if they end up in hospital.

Dulwich Hill Residents - Low Traffic schemes etc
Spartacus replied to Pugwash's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Interesting Is this to gain support for new schemes or discuss existing schemes ? -

Over the past month, there's been some strange goings on with the stock markets with things like gamestop seeing unprecedented investment by small investors following tips from sites like reddit. Today silver seems to be the investment of choice. A few years after the Spanish flu pandemic (1929) , the stock market crashed as stocks were valued a lot higher than their worth after a speculative trading boom, high unemployment and reduced production levels. This caused the great depression that lasted ten years. With shares being manipulated at the moment through whispers on sites like reddit, and unemployment in the west high along with some industry sectors being suppressed through lock down, could this be a sign that stock markets are about to crash ? Conspiracists among us could even question if this is manipulation by outside parties in a bid to bring down the west after covid was introduced to destabilise the economy first. Should we be worried ?

Hey Bob Legally they don't own the air above their house so with a careful cantilever design you could always build an extension just above their loft 😉

Sounds an interesting development (unless of course it's trump bleach 😱) FYI the new emoji possibly only works on the latest Apple and Android devices 😭

You're not wrong johnl I think it's a case of not knowing if you can still be a carrier even after both vaccinations as you can still get covid but the severity should be less. Equally how long the vaccine protects you for. Lots of questions that will only come out over time.

Back to the topic in hand There was a piece on BBC breakfast this morning talking about care homes and vaccines It discussed the need for families to see the residents, the care homes saying not yet, and vaccinations plus take up. It appears that currently 20% of staff haven't been vaccinated, some through not having the opportunity to get to a vaccination center or seeing a vaccinator. But some for reasons unknown are refusing the vaccine. Is that acceptable or for the sake of the residents health that the stuff are in charge of, should vaccination be compulsory to work in a care home ? Raises a whole raft of civil liberty questions, including flu vaccine take up and compulsory vaccination policies but what happens if one of the unvaccinated brings the virus in and half the residents die ?

Interesting question Sue And in reverse, will any Scots in England need to apply to live in the UK in the same way EU nationals did or a visa if they arrive after independence ? It opens up so many questions that may change the opinion oolls either way
-
I read a couple of articles today that questions if Scotland could afford to go independent. Whilst support for the vote to be independent has for the moment risen, the possible factors that may not allow it includes Scotland's current deficit and how long would it take then to become an EU member once they become independent. https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/Can-Scotland-afford-independence https://www.scotsman.com/news/opinion/columnists/scottish-independence-if-scotland-breaks-free-uk-it-faces-bankruptcy-and-eu-cant-afford-let-it-rejoin-soon-jim-duffy-3100330 Both articles paint a bleak future with austerity a big factor. It would be interesting to see what the figures, calculations and projections are and I believe that with part of Scotland's projected income being oil and gas revenues , both of which are declining in use (shift to electric cars and shifts away from gas for heating) then the model may be even less plausible over the next twenty years. There is part of the current plan that sees Scotland becoming a major offshore wind farm but as that's a free resource that can be farmed virtually anywhere there's wind then that could be a risky strategy. I think there's a lot more to the debate than Scotland wanting to get out of the UK, including finance, reentry to Europe and it's future in the world market.

Seabag Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > . Good point 😆

That's all it can be Seabag , theoretical, as none of us are actually in power or a position to change it. All we can do is discuss it, get wound up / down by it or speculate about it, but unless Boris / Kier is on here we can't do much more at this juncture. So my stance is look at what can be done as a conversation point and not play the blame game and you never know , as a collection of bright people we may actually solve the conundrum 🤔

And the politics slip in 😭 Rather than looking at the bigger picture of how can the vaccine be distributed to protect as many people as it can globally, it falls down to I am / am not all right Jack on here. Given the issues with production, the lack of leadership by WHO, how can this global humanitarian crisis be turned around to protect as many as possible. If Europe can't get vaccines soon then countries like France (already approaching lock down 3 and 75 thousand deaths) may soon overtake us as the highest death rate in the European area. I don't advocate robbing Peter to pay Paul so what are the practical steps that can be taken by the EU, UK and WHO to save as many lives as possible here, across Europe and the world. After all if a country (say Africa) doesn't vaccinate most off the population then there is a risk that the virus will mutate there and spread around the world again.

I'd have a pint with them all, listen to what they say and make a decision on what's best for London and Conversely for myself Then I'd still want Count BinFace (but not necessarily Vote for) to win as the whole concept of a London assembly and mayor is an expensive bureaucratic model and funds supporting it could be better deployed.

SpringTime Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Sorry Spart, but they all look the same. LOL You're not wrong , which is a telling statement about our politicians They are all the same and have the same basic personality traits otherwise they wouldn't be politicians nor would they be have ambitions to get on top. I often wonder if politicians and top business people have the same traits, ruthless, ambition and willing to step on the people below them to get to the top.
