  1. and while you're there don't forget to mention the rubber bands (see earlier post)...
  2. Mockney, I wasn't around when Victoria was at the throne, and given that I don't know jack about religion or politics I'm not about to start learning about old English birds. Can't we talk about something interesting; like rugby!? Bob, it's all a front; criminals can't be snobs...that's just crazy talk! It sounds like your "direct descendant" friend is just a rich POM criminal's great great grandson. Snob's or not the Aussie's are still rubbish at rugby.
  3. I didn't say NZ was class free; just that I don't give a stuff about the English system as it's way OTT. It's true there is a bit of snobbery in the old Aucklanders. They think NZ ends at the Bombay Hills (the small mountain range that effectively divides Auckland from anything south). Aucklanders are known as JAFA's (just another f**king Aucklander) to the rest of NZ.
  4. Bob, things look small because you're looking through the the wrong end of the telescope...
  5. Being a kiwi I don't waste my time with soccer. The ball's the wrong shape, waiting 90 mins for a goalless draw bores the hell out of me and all the players are p*ssy's! Imagine if rugby players took a dive every time someone farted in their direction like soccer players do! Soccer's for girls (enter the offended reader to comment on my sexist remark)... I will say though that I rather did enjoy the world cup and it was (don't tell anyone) the only time in my life I've ever rooted for Australia!
  6. PS - If you want to work there: send your CV to [email protected].
  7. To end the M&S or White Stuff speculation, just spoke to White Stuff, they're definitely opening in the old Walsh site "early in the New Year".
  8. At Bob's request I've set up this post to better air my views, give you some ED gossip and just generally entertain/annoy you all. So without further ado let the EDKiwi bashing begin!
  9. Mean, spiteful? Moi? Huguenot you could be right, maybe I just don't realise how my comments are being interpreted when read on a forum such as this. It must be my Kiwi view on the world that maybe doesn't fit into the British way. If I was English I'd probably be apologising now but I'm not, so I won't. I'll just carry on entertaining those with a sense of humor and offending those without. :)
  10. LOL, I do it when the ticket machine's don't work and the ticket office is closed (or the queue too long). Of course I ALWAYS buy my travelcard on the other side of the gate once I'm through.
  11. Being a kiwi (and GBK originally being a joint set up by kiwis) I was excited to try GBK for the first time. I ordered takeaway as I wasn't up for going out. The Kiwi Buger was the obvious choice and of course accompanied by the great kiwi classic; the lime milkshake. I have to say that it was pretty good and the lime milkshake was to die for. The burger a a classic kiwi burger and the shake just as good. The only let down was the price but hey I didn't mind paying for a bit of nostalgic kiwi grub. The second time we ate in. We managed to get a table, then went up and ordered our burgers. I got the satay burger and fries with garlic mayo (and of course the lime milkshake). After a short wait we got the food. It was as it should be; hot and fresh. Overall the satay burger was overloaded with sauce and you couldn't really taste the factory prepared (but not too bad) burgers. The chips were not bad (at best) but the garlic mayo was absolutely overloaded with raw garlic. Basically I left feeling like I'd just downed a jar of peanut butter and eaten a whole clove of garlic. Luckily my lime milkshake helped to stem the overpowering flavours left in my mouth from the sauces. My wife still made me buy some PK on the way home though, and no wonder! The third time - takeaways again - this time the Blue Cheese burger (and lime milkshake!); again overloaded with sauce and the wrong flavors. Someone at GBK has clearly decided that the "100% Aberdeen-Angus Scotch beef" isn't worth tasting and had drowned it in these flavors that should really just compliment the burger, not kill it! The verdict: GBK is definitely overpriced for the service you are getting however the burgers are bigger than you'd get in a cheap fast food outlet so I guess somewhat justified. Personally I like the food, so long as it doesn't contain any of their overpowering sauces. A plain burger, cheese burger or the good old Kiwi Burger would be the picks. My favourite of the lot though had to be the great kiwi dessert: the Pavlova. Again it wasn't the best I've had (factory prepared) but a good dose of kiwi nostalgia none the less. I don't think GBK is the kind of place I'd frequent too much now but it's not bad on the odd occasion, and as mentioned in a previous post a welcome change from the Dulwich Brasserie as it was so empty.
  12. If you take a comment like that as racism then it's understandable why you feel the need to winge so much in the first place. Escalating a conversation into something it's not is just juvenile. Maybe you should be a politician.
  13. Just follow someone through the gate at london bridge. If you use your morning paper to cover the sensor on the other side of the gate (before the person you're following has completely gone through) then the gate won't beep or anything, in fact it will stay open for as long as you've got the sensor covered. There's no way you'll get picked up in the rush hour crowds at LB station, then you can buy your travel card on the other side. Win, win!
  14. It's a very valid point that someone made to me after seeing that sandwich board on Barry Rd recently. London is London so don't bury your heads in the sand. Thanks for your "winging Pommy" reply though too Nonni...your trivial comments are always welcome.
  15. LOL, sorry Keef; I was agreeing with you not trying to steal your thunder mate!
  16. I would start with British Rail or Southwark Planning. Keep us posted!
  17. There was a planning application at some stage to turn the big empty premises on the corner of LL and Bassano St into a gym/physio but I think it was rejected.
  18. Get the address of the location and call Southwark Planning.
  19. It's naive for anyone to allow themselves the luxury of thinking ED is a safe place to live. After all we still live in London and have high crime area's such as Peckham right next door to us. ED does appear a safe place, but it's only when your ignorance overtakes your self awareness that you will get yourself into a tight spot with some scummy rapist. Be careful out there, London is London.
  20. Agreed, but don't like your chances, and dread to think what they would become if some Parkhill Properties type developer got their hands on the sites. Maybe the existing ugly is the lesser of two weavel's (ala Russ Crowe) compared to the new ugly.
  21. Admin, Although it's in Peckham you should really include Ganapati in the vote. It's by far and away the best Indian I've ever eaten at. Very authentic, not your typical "Rogan Josh", "Butter Chicken" and "Chicken Tikka" curry house (in fact I don't think they have ANY of those on the menu). Nothing comes close. I could never eat at any other Indian restaurant now. PS - If you're going to go - have the Bana leaf Thali. It's a great sample of all the best dishes in the reastaurant, and very filling. Wonderful food.
  22. Polly, Anyone wanting to secure commercial property on LL will have to pay through the nose for it. As you've probably noticed the prices are going through the roof as companies like Parkhill Properties grab anything they can, do it up and lease it at horrendous prices that only chain stores can afford (Caffe Nero pay circa ?60k p/a and the Walsh site is going for ?90k!, both owned by Parkhill). I would love to see another local business owned and run in ED but I don't like your chances unless you have a big cheque book. Good luck anyway.
  23. Don't understand this Xmas turkey rubbish. Give me a good old smoked leg of ham any day! That how we Antipodeans eat on Xmas day. YUMMY!
  24. I know of a stunning 3 bed semi in Hindmans Rd that recently sold for just under ?500k. As for up and coming - well Elephant would be the obvious choice if you have the patience and really want to cash in on the regeneration. Look what regeneration did for Peckham. Elephant isn't really oing to be desirable to live for another 5 years at least though. Hey you could always try up and coming East London! Olympics anyone?!
