  1. Cheers is a little "Offy" on LL opposite St Thomas More Hall. It's small and doesn't stand out but the service really is friendly.
  2. Neighbours in "Bellenden" are from Peckham, therefore: Peckhamites.
  3. I will say one thing I am learning from some of you - particularly the parents with little one's and the one's that like to linger a for little longer with their laptop and/or paper - is that there is definately a market for this sort of store. It's just a shame that it isn't a local independant operator providing the service. Would a local operater have been able to provide this service in that premises had the rental price not been so high that only a chain store could afford it? It's good to see such encouraging banter on this site. Great to see everyone with an opinion.
  4. Agreed that it's not the best designed bill in the world, however, let's also agree that it's better than what we have now and will do more good than harm. :)
  5. Thanks must also go to our councillor Richard Thomas who went in to bat for the locals tonight and obviously had an impact. Cllr Richard Thomas
  6. Well after all of your postings lately of the Drum providing countless hours of entertainment for those deemed to be "close" to the owners I've just experienced the Drum. Great night, great owners... and I met the lead singer of REPUBLICA. They sing the well known "baby I'm ready to go..." single. She was wearing a cool hat too. I love the Drum! :))
  7. UNBELIEVABLE!!! The little guy has finally won one for the masses. Well done to the anon who decided to show up and stick up for themselves and LL! Thanks to euphorbia for posting the update too. :)-D
  8. ED'ites. There is a new bill various parties are trying to push through government called the Sustainable Communities Bill. Basically the bill addresses the major issue every UK high St has at present in being overrun by chain stores. It empowers local governments to have more choice in the type or stores that can open their doors in our High Streets. The bill needs public support, including yours. If you care about ED and don't want to see it overrun by these chain stores then you should attend. Sustainable Communities Bill Central London Rally Monday March 26th 7.00pm - 9.00pm Methodist Central Hall, Storey's Gate, Westminster (3 min from Westminster tube station) More details here: Sustainable Communities Bill Rally http://www.localworks.org/themes/locworks/sidebar-stats.jpg
  9. The planning application Caffe Nero submitted ages ago re: change of use of its premises to A2/A3 from A1 is being reviewed tonight at the DCC planning meeting. If you live within a short distance of the cafe (100m) and don't want it there tonight is your chance to go along and have your say. It's on at 7pm at Dulwich Library.
  10. If the garage in question really do have a skimming issue they will be found out very quickly. The way this happens is: The stations card payment acquirer (more than likely Barclaycard or Streamline) will have received reports from Visa and/or Mastercard regarding the pattern of people that have used their cards at that particular garage and people that have had their cards skimmed. The acquirer will then send a forensics investigator to look into what's happened on the site. If it turns out that there really is an issue then the merchant will be liable to pay for all fraud that has occurred as a result of the theft + fines dished out by the card schemes + forensics fees. The merchant will then be elevated to a "Level 1" merchant status meaning from that point on the merchant will need to undergo an on-site audit on an annual basis to prove that they are PCI compliant (basically a security standard that any business that accepts cards for payment needs to be compliant with). So rest assured EDF'ers the garage will be found out and no stake out is required. Although I still like the sound of a Steak out! ;-) The way the banks over here deal with CC theft is poor. In NZ/OZ if your account is ripped off the bank gives you the money back immediately then investigates. Over here they investigate then give it back 6-8 weeks later. It's silly because ultimately it's never going to be the customers fault, but we have to suffer without the money for 6-8 weeks while the investigation goes on.
  11. Dulwich Sports Club is a great social club. They also have cricket, squash & croquet. It's in Dulwich proper though (Burbage Rd), down near Herne Hill like you said. It's worth going the distance.
  12. across the rd from BMC. Near the organic vege shop and the fresh flower co.
  13. BMC is a haven for ED mum's and their prams. It bores me but I like that they are there rather than a chain store. The Drum has the best coffee in ED but is too smokey. Bring on the anti-smoking laws! Mockney, are you going to the G&B tasting on Wednesday night? You (and others) might finally be able to put a face to the EDKiwi name...
  14. Fear not, they do have draught beer (Staropramen and San Miguel I think), they just hadn't taken delivery of the kegs on the weekend.
  15. Seconded. I went to G&B on Friday night and it was great. Very good wines on offer, you can actually buy them from the shop and take them through and drink them in the bar. Also you can BYOF (Bring your own food) and pay ?3 "chippage" for plates and cutlery etc while you drink their wine. Good thinking 99! 5 Stars from me - a drastic improvement. See you Wednesday for those going.
  16. Don't be so naive to think that Nero being on LL is a good thing. Nero set a precedent that will make it easier for other shops like Starbucks to appear...and they will if we don't unite against them.
  17. Demolish the lot I say. If you're unemployed why do you need to live in central London? You can be unemployed bums anywhere. Especially out of London where it's much cheaper for the govt to pay for housing using my taxpayer ???. Replace them all with nice middle class semi's that push the ED property price up further and make me richer! (a bit of tongue-in-cheek there for those of you about to lash out at me) ;-)
  18. What about a Treasure Hunt around ED with gift contributions from all of the local businesses? We can team up in pairs and follow a trail around the suburb with it ending at the fair.
  19. not sure if my wife would like me speed dating - especially not kiwi style (involves sheep ;-))
  20. =================== ?"Welcome to Camberwell"? =================== ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? >:D<
  21. Reluctant, I agree that there are too many chain stores however you do exaturate a little: Just because the likes of Mootoo and ED Deli, H&G, have another store it does not mean they are not independant. EDD started in ED, hence the name, and yes have now opened at Harrods. Moo too have another store in West Dulwich. So what. As for H&G and Blue Mountain, I wasn't even aware they had other outlets. These are all locally owned and operated stores. They give something back to the community and are certainly not forcing locals operaters out of the neighbourhood. "independant" does not necessarily mean "one-store", it has more to do with the way they operate. You can hardly put them in the same basket as Iceland, Somerfield, etc.
  22. I don't think that's true or we would all be burning wood in our fireplaces still and there wouldn't be smoke restrictions in central London. You can get smokeless bricks and coal at Dulwich DIY for pretty cheap.
  23. Muttley - you're an ideas man you are.
