  1. Ignorance is BLISS!
  2. Thought I'd start a Christmas card post for everyone to post their Christmas wishes... I'd like to wish a Merry Christmas to everyone in East Dulwich and the Village, especially to the locals that I know and love and that help to make ED the unique place that it is: Mon Petit Chou, Drum, The Uplands Cafe, The Palmerston, Thai Corner, Angela from SE22 magazine, and the fudge lady on the Northcross Rd Markets (YUM!). Also to all the guys at Dulwich Cricket Club AND of course, last but not least, to all of the members of the ED Forum. My life wouldn't be the same without you so have a good one! :)-D
  3. You're going senile in your old age Father. I've already got my prezzy's from "Santa" sitting under my tree, and there's lots of them! Enclosed is also a thank you card from Santa telling what a good boy I've been, especially for sharing my somewhat objective views on the East Dulwich Forum. I will admit though, one of them was labelled "DANGER: Flammable, smokeless, slow burning, environmentally friendly substance enclosed". Maybe you're right about the coal. As for no supper; I'll just drink the supper I was going to leave out for you Santa! Merry Christmas! :)-D Oh and in the interest of keeping this post "on the subject at hand": Marks & Spencer. There you go.
  4. So finally Warne and McGrath are retiring. England might actually be in with a chance next time around!
  5. OK so it sounds like Devon/Cornwall and Wales are the places to go then. Reckon I'll have problems with finding random B&B acommodation around Xmas/NY?
  6. Broadband performance is influenced by two things: 1) The contention ratio at the exchange (i.e. how many users you are sharing the 'pipe' with at the exchange) 2) The distance your house is from the exchange. For example - I used to be with PlusNet. I was paying for an 8Mb service but could only get 6 as I am 'quite a distance' from the Exchange (it's halfway up Lordship Lane). The 6Mb however was very quick as the contention ratio I was paying for was only 20:1 (in short that's good). PlusNet's broadband service was good but I didn't need all that I was paying for ?24/mth. So I moved to Sky for a ?5'er a month. I have the same speed line (up to 8Mb) but the performance is rubbish as the contention ratio is about 50:1 I think. Sometimes my download speeds are slower than dial up. So the bottom line is that you get what you pay for. I can handle the slow speeds as I'm the only power user in the house, but if you want more, pay for more. Always ask what the contention ratio is. The unfortunate thing is that the response will probably be the sound of tumbleweed rolling past the headset at the other end of the line as the indian/russian call centre worker wonders to him/herself what the hell that is. Good luck!
  7. How strange, the builder have also told me it's going to be a White Stuff. I've also got a friend that works at White Stuff who's confirmed the site. Maybe it's going to be split between the 2? It IS quite a big site.

  9. I can't stop laughing...
  10. EDKiwi'a tip: stay away unless you're a loser with no 1ST life...
  11. This is very sad. Did anyone actually take this post any further (starting a petition or approaching the council), or does it take an incident like this before people actually take action?
  12. It's TRUE! Moxon's of Clapham are opening in Lordship Lane in late Jan. They wouldn't give me the address but they definitely confirmed they are opening. Good news, a local business and a fishmonger in one go. This is exactly what ED needs, WOOHOO!!
  13. I was wondering about the whole "going off topic" thing myself, considering there really wasn't one to begin with. As for the tomatoes; eat them first.
  14. Georgia, actually I thought that's exactly what this site was set up for....opinions. I wasn't making jokes about 5 women being killed, why the hell would I do that!? Luckily for you this post it aptly titled "ED Kiwi Soapbox", so I guess the next time you see there is a new post in here you'll choose not to open it and not to read it. That way you can save yourself from being offended from a light sense of humour which you clearly don't have!
  15. Blinder, of course, yes, there is always an exception to every rule...
  16. Blimey James, does all that stuff you just rambled on about really cause hurricanes!? Italians and Greeks don't work very hard, but neither do they claim to. Being laid back is in their culture. I wish I lived there! Poms are by far the laziest workers I know. That's why "antipodeans" are so well valued over here in professional circles. You poms don't know the meaning of hard work. I'd rather have a Polish tradesman working on my house, even if he didn't speak english, than a pom. By the time I'd translated my scope of work to him the pom would have just finished his morning tea "break". Now can we stop talking about rich getting rich and poor getting poorer and talk about how much money I'm making on my house again!? ;-)
  17. Di and Dodo were killed by the Suffolk serial killer. He was the "photographer" on the motorbike next to the car. He tried to climb into the car to get a leg over on Di. The driver tried to avoid the killer and hit the pole, wiping them out. Just goes to show that lower class English people shouldn't be driving cars in Europe!
  18. Mikhail, I've got nothing against non-english people....I AM one! I just don't like when people come to an english speaking country & they can't speak english! When in Rome...! Not to move away from the original subject though; I like Blue Mountain as a cafe, but for breakfast I don't. The reason being that the only eggs they do are scrambled. I'm only a fan of scrambled eggs on the odd occasion and would like to have the choice. Furthermore I don't think I've ever eaten at any cafe/restaurant that serves scrambled eggs that aren't overcooked. Blue Mountain is included.
  19. Isn't this thread going on in some other post at present? Anyway tried The Uplands cafe on Saturday - HUGE fry up for only ?4, all cooked to perfection and the service was the friendliest I've seen in ED (the floor staff actually spoke english for a start!). Good all round really.

  21. I bet they smoke too. On another note, can this thread please go back to the lines of: "I bought an x brm semi in 1999 and recently sold it for ?XXX,XXX"? I need some middle class self gratification that my house is making me a bundle. >;o)
  22. see my post in the "Italian Restaurant's (or lack of)" re: Mon petit chou starting italian in the evenings.
  23. OK folks I need some idea's on where to go for a last minute Xmas holiday for a week. I'm talking no flights, just renting a car and heading in a certain direction. I've not done much domestic stuff in GB. Been to Cardiff, Edinburgh, Cornwall and Devon, Brighton, that's about it. Feel like just getting away from it all though and seeing the country. Staying in some cosy B&B's and seeing some great scenery. Which direction should I head?
  24. GOOD NEWS! - Mon petit chou, the nice little independent cafe on Lorship Lane opposite Somerfields, will soon be open at night and going a bit Italian by selling pizza and pasta. They're in the process of applying for a liquor license and then it will be all go! The place is simple, and could do with a bit of a spruce up if it's going to go into the evening market, but the food always pretty good and the service very friendly. For those wondering why he's chosen to open late; well it's because the landlord has just chucked his rent up a ton and he needs to make some more money so he can afford to stay there. Best to go down and support him otherwise there could be another chain store taking his place (who said Nero opening didn't have an impact on him!?).
  25. Mark, I've thought about doing the "no junk mail" sign for ages but to be honest never thought delivery guys in this country would even acknowledge it! Good news that it works. A few years back a guy in Australia once put a notice on his letter box (in fine print) basically saying that any sender delivering unsolicited mail to his house would be charged a "reading fee" of $20. He would then send out a $20 invoice to every company that ignored his warning and continued to deliver. The astonishing thing is that about 50% of them actually paid up. He made hundreds from it. Amongst the payees was Prime Minister John Howards office, as they put some political message through his mailbox! What a hoot.
