I was serious about the pie throwing (at chain store managers) competition... -

The kitchen shop is another welcome addition to ED. It's independently owned and operated by a family living up on Dog Kennel Hill. It's simply something they've wanted to do for a while and have now taken the step. I went inside on opening day and it's a nice shop. Yes the shelves were a little empty but what do you expect on day 1? All of the stuff in the shop is quality and of course in tradition with an independent local business operating in LL is a bit pricier than your average chain store. A price we ED'ian's should be willing to pay though to keep these types of business in the area and the other type out. FYI - I read some figures the other day that suggested every ?10 spent in a locally owned and operated store is effectively ?27 invested back into the local community. Good luck to them.

If it's a butcher every 5 metre and crummy old pubs you want; Rye Lane is just up the road and there's plenty of cheap accommodation around it as well (so long as you stay away from Bellenden Rd). Those who know me on this forum know that I love local businesses and hate chain stores. I as a home owner am certainly one who is benefiting from the gentrification of ED. At this stage that gentrification includes a reasonable mix of local independent boutique shops and grocers and some nasty, but not all that bad, chain stores. What scares me is when the real chain stores like Tesco, Weatherspoons and Starbucks try and come to town. That's when gentrification will turn in to "we-look-like-every-other-crappy-high-st-in-london-itis" and when we will all be shopping at Tesco for everything we need to buy, whether we like it or not. I still maintain that the government needs to give local residents more more choice in what businesses can open their doors in their local town centres. For some reason that option seems to be alien to the government. This is not specific to Southwark either, this is country wide.

SHHHHHH, don't tell her anything else or it won't be a secret any more!!! Then everyone will want to live here. Whoops, too late. ;-)

It looks a bit tacky from outside but the food there is great! It's good when it's really busy too as it's a good atmosphere. You can pick from anything traditional mexican (tortillas, enchiladas, fajitas, nachos, chile con carne, etc) to your more simple (and HUGE) burgers with fries etc. To drink is good spanish/mexican beers, a great cocktail list and of course SANGRIA! This service is great and it's pretty well priced too. I highly recommend it.

Ah yes, jealousy will get you nowhere. I can take it all back to NZ, or maybe Oz. Maybe I'll just put my finger in the air and see where I end up. You're right Jamie though in that the real winner is the RE agents and the banks. We should all start promoting our houses using private sale sites such as propertybroker.com. We have more chance of selling our prices for a better rate then and we get to cut the RE agents out!

Ahhh, I love posts like this. My 2 bed garden flat investment right off the heart of Lordship Lane is growing in value with every post! Sorry to gloat but I couldn't help myself ;-)

My friends, sisters, uncles, cousins, great aunt, knows this guy who saw this girl was eating at a cafe one day and heard this guy who wanted to work at M&S saying that during his job interview someone mentioned that M&S was going to buy up the entire LL estate and turn it into a great big M&S. It will sell independently grown organic food & middle class clothes and all the young families in ED will love it because there's space for the pram to park while you sip your Nero coffee in store! Please Louisa, give me a break on this here say RUBBISH! You should be a reporter with the lack of factual information in that post.

Just to try and cut off the constant off-topic ramble that is starting to disease this forum; I went to Moxons yesterday for the first time and got some king prawn and organic salmon. Both were TO DIE FOR! Of course it didn't come cheap, but as this is ED we can all afford it right? And those that can't can always move to Forest Hill, Peckham or Sydenham, right >;o)

OK, I can CONFIRM that 116 Lordship Lane is to be the site for the new gym/physio. They have not yet started building but it will be the ground floor (only) of 116. They will be shutting down their Camberwell branch to move here. The lovely owner Elizabeth (who I met whilst standing in the queue at Moxons) also mentioned that she would love some of us to leave some feedback as to what we would like to see from a local gym to fit our busy lifestyles. Bear in mind that this is a small site. Regards EDKiwi PS - YIPPEE, the value of my nearby flat just went up!

That's "local INDEPENDANT business owners" to you Snorky. -
Well I might be able to play depending on the date and time. I've been known to throw the arm over on the odd occasion.

Who are we going to play?

OK so this has nothing to do with ED but something to do with the food most ED residents east. There is a petition on 10 Downing St's web site to ban trans fats in food. If you haven't heard of trans fats they're basically really really bad engineered fats that exist in most processed foods and some red meat. In short they mess up your insides, however they are not listed on UK food labels and have no restrictions on their use. YET! If you want to find out more click here: http://www.tfx.org.uk/page0.html If you want to sign the petition to stop their use in food click here: http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Limit-transfats/#detail

Let's have a chain store pie throwing competition! We can get managers of Starbucks, Nero, GBK, M&S, White Stuff all to stick their heads through a hole in a wall while the local ED residents throw cream pies at them. Maybe have prizes from local independent business owners such as a free coffee from Drum, a yummy greek salad from EDD, a rack of lamb from William Rose or maybe a free dinner at Thai Corner! -

Sweat Shop anyone, anyone, Bueller? -
24th, jeez can't you guys get any dates together that I can make!? Maybe it's a conspiracy to keep me away? :( The 24th is bad for me also, though it's a bash that I'm only semi committed to so I may be able to side step it. Will see closer to the time.

This "dribbling" off topic is exactly the reason I asked Mark to sort the posts from latest to oldest. Does anyone actually stay on topic on this post any more??!! Who gives a shyte about Starbucks!? I'd call their coffee "village", but that would be a compliment for a big corporate money guzzler like them.

Leave her alone, she's nice and her magazine is great. If she doesn't reply to your emails it's because her magazine is so popular she's flat out and simply doesn't have time. If people stop reading her mag and advertising in it as a result then I'm sure she'll have more time to pay attention to her inbox. Who read's email anyway's? It's just a lazy way of communicating and the average inbox is generally the home for spam more than anything else these days. The good thing about Angela and her magazine is she stands up for the ED cause. She also gets involved in the community (other than just writing about it). If there's an ED cause worth fighting for she does, rather than just sit on a forum and winge about it, but not actually do anything about it (ring any bells pommy people!?).
