  1. Smart looking shop front to replace shabby old building, 0% commission and free champagne. Thanks Foxtons! Seems you are ED's most generous estate agent.
  2. Does it matter if it couldn't? The high class soap sellers should just continue to make hay while the sun shines.
  3. It may be at the extreme north western edge of Greater East Dulwich but the Sun and Doves is pretty unique and definitely worth investigating. I don't share Mockney's experience of unfriendly bar staff either. The owner, Mark Dodds, is an active member of the SE5 Forum and an extremely friendly chap although he does whinge a bit about the trials and tribulations of leasing a pub from Scottish and Newcastle. Sounds like you can empathise though scor46. I have been trying to get him to shake off his integrity and cash in by converting the Doves into an Elbow Room... http://www.se5forum.org/forum/index.php/topic,608.0.html
  4. Going to the Sun and Doves- they have got a 42" plasma screen in the beer garden...
  5. removed
  6. If people prefer to stay in the bar rather than returning to their seats then clearly the answer is to let them drink on the terraces. That would also improve the atmosphere no end. We used to be able to drink on the terraces- what happened? Who spoiled the party?
  7. Not been yet! I've been meaning to have a look in but I went once on a Monday night and it was closed and again on Wednesday afternoon- same problem. Looks really nice inside though. Just haven't managed to get past peering in the window. My own local is The Dark Horse- it's nice but a bit too posh for me - they serve your drinks at the table rather than the bar! ( No toilet attendant though *Bob*). I do go there to eat but for drinking I prefer the eclectic mix of characters found in the Hermit's Cave and if that closes, usually at about 1am, then I often venture on to the infamous Silver Buckle. I also try to get to the Sun and Doves as often as I can because it is a great Camberwell institution. They have a regular jazz night on a Sunday and quite often Jamie Cullum does 'secret' gigs there. They also have a huge beer garden, good food and lots of interesting art. Another place I should mention is The Grove on Camberwell Grove- again we go there for food in a child friendly environment with good ale. Apart from these I do venture up the hill to the Canning - again for the food- and when my parents are here they like to drink in the Phoenix. That is the point about the Ivanhoe- it is just on the fringe of the area I go out in and if it was open and served good food then I expect I'd go there quite frequently.
  8. Jamie H- If where you bank, shop and go out drinking defines where your house is then mine is slap bang in the middle of the square mile- should be worth an absolute fortune. Glad to hear you have been following the thread - ignoring the debate about your location we've certainly given you a glowing report and plenty of free publicity. So give us an update- how's business? Has the 'ED' location paid off? Are you serving food yet? Do you now open 11-11 or even later perhaps? And do you take credit cards or have a cash machine or both or neither? What about the flat development- how is that going? Can you give us some reassurance that your sideline in property development will not be to the long term detriment of the pub? Perhaps you could give us a guarantee that you will never put in a change of use application to convert the pub itself to a residential unit of some description...

  10. How about a tube or a tram?
  11. Metric is fine with me as long as you are still allowed to serve beer in 568ml glasses.
  12. No youtube here I'm afraid... I'm sure it's hilarious though.
  13. I took my Mum to the Fox on the Hill for dinner. I also spent about ?40 on cakes for my vultures (sorry- colleagues) but that was in no way a celebration.
  14. Good luck. It was yesterday.
  15. No thanks. Birthdays are sh:d.
  16. Yes. Agreed. I was wrong. Although I only asked but I was really implying that the statement was an oxymoron. It's not.
  17. I see that. My attempt at pedantry was incorrect. A naieve assumption could easily be warranted as naive or not you still have to make assumptions. But I am still not celebrating my birthday.
  18. When is a naive assumption warranted? Or a warranted assumption naive?
  19. Exactly right Sean. My closest friends don't celebrate their birthdays. My experiences of people who misbehave on their birthday are old friends, friends of friends and colleagues. It's pretty much universal though. If you organise your own birthday party then you are one of the people I mean....
  20. I hate the smug self satisfied 'it's my birthday' look on people's faces and the way they nurse their dregs waiting for their next birthday drink. Or worst of all when they sulk about someone not coming or the lack of cards or whatever. If you really want to celebrate your birthday then you should take your Mum out. She did the hard part- and I don't just mean letting your Dad have a go on her...
  21. I don't see why a man with no arms would have a downer on toilet attendants. If you give them ?2 they'll probably hold it for you. Got to beat the usual Friday night with damp thighs.
  22. And I can see you nipping outside to slash in the bushes and save a quid.
