  2. ????, surely you would apply for the job and if successful then you would move. Loz, that is another policy that had to be dropped, in this instance, by the City of London Police. They did in fact have a policy that all applicants had to be six feet tall and, indeed, the overriding factor was just as you mention, that is was seen as particularly discriminatory against women candidates.
  3. Very good point about the degree aspect, Jeremy, but can't agree on the criminal record point. It's always been accepted that a criminal record is unacceptable for the role of a police officer and, indeed, a prison officer. Fluent English would seem to be a necessity, but I can see what you mean. Quite a few years ago, the police service had to drop the age criteria because it was felt/deemed to be discriminatory. The rule was that you could only be appointed between the ages of 18 and 30, unless joining straight from the armed services when the upper age limit was extended to 32. This obviously excluded a large proportion of the population for no good reason other than a number. I just pose the question that this is for no good reason other than geography. Or should that read: other than geographical.
  4. Hi Otta It has been announced today that the Met Police will no longer accept applications, for the role of police officer, from applicants that do not live in London (have to have lived here for 3yrs). Clearly, this excludes a lot of the population. Therefore, can they still claim to be an equal opportunities employer ?
  5. ........are no longer an equal opportunities employer?
  6. Roundabout Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Don?t like terms and conditions of any job ? > LEAVE and get another job ? If able. Bit of a silly comment, Roundabout, isn't the industrial action centered on their terms and conditions being unilaterally changed ie: not the contract they signed up to when accepting/commencing employment with their employers?

  9. Connections connections, there's always close intertwined connections at "the top". The barristers' chambers headed by Michael Havers back in the late 70's/early 80's also had as a member the shadow attorney general at the time, John Morris Q.C. (Labour). So all political legal advice was pretty well "sewn up" back then. It was also the chambers where Margaret Thatcher gained her grounding in the law, along with Angus Maude ( the then Paymaster General) one of her closest confidante, and where his son Francis Maude, now a (semi) prominent politician, also practised from.

  13. SJ wrote "You are better at asking questions than answering them aren't you" It's old habits, I'm afraid, SJ. Even retired I suppose years of detective work can't help but come to the fore.
  14. Still not sure I follow, SJ. Randombloke stated ..."vile crime..." I totally agree and then states ..."best justice system in the world"....with which I don't agree. As you ask "when was it the best then" and "When was it good", am I right in assuning that you have the belief that it never ever was the best in the world?
  15. Received my monthly phone bill recently, ten times more than normal as the "inclusive minutes" on my tariff had been charged for. It appears I am unable to send them an e-mail, even in the " My Vodaphone Account" section of the website. Several calls over the past week have resulted in promises of a manager calling me back to discuss resolution, but guess what, nothing on each occasion. As the direct debit was due to go out, I have cancelled it as I can imagine the uphill task of trying to get a refund. I was offered a 20% reduction, though !!!! Has anybody out there had a similar experience with them, or any other phone provider for that matter. If so, I would appreciate your feedback. I will add, I've never had a problem with them in approx 15/16 years.
  16. Difficult qustion to answer, SJ, perhaps Randombloke can enlighten us as to what period of time he refers to, but there's no doubt whatsoever that it most certainly is not the case in the here and now
  17. Good post, Randombloke, don't agree about the best justice system in the world though, not really, not anymore. Also, we now have the breaking news about Westminster, Leon Brittain etc etc. Is there no end to all of this. How could so many go unchallenged and escape justice for such long periods of time?

    Mice problem

With you there, SJ, and I have previously stated on another thread, there are always at least two. An old fashioned "snapper" trap gets them EVERY time if you bait it with a chocolate and caramel mix. The best is a Mars bar. I know it doesn't sound pleasant, but bite a piece off, chew it a litle then spit it out and apply to the trap. They just can't resist it.

  21. True, Jeremy, that's why it had to go !! But the O.P. stated "not going to drive that much", hence the suggestion for a bit of luxury. No good for using for a school/supermarket run though. And it does get passed by as a Passat most of the time.
  22. If you want something that is just about depreciation proof try a Volvo. Most are comparatively cheap (compared to price when new) once they get to about 6 years old. If you wanted to go for luxury and something " a bit bigger" then try a VW Phaeton. Fantastic car, prices depreciated in a heart beat when new and a very unassuming luxury car that gets passed by rather than say a Merc or BMW or Jag that little oiks might scratch/damage etc. Best car I ever had.
