  1. Absolute Hell at the NT is well named, it turns out. At least as far as I could make out over all the crisp packets and mobile-checking. On the plus side, the theatre was half empty so you can switch to a better seat.
  2. Rupert, you sound like a responsible owner, so good for you, but not everyone is unfortunately. I do Nordic walking and almost every time I'm out at least one loose dog will run up barking, I guess because they're not sure what the poles are about, and I often get friendlier dogs jumping up - none of which is a problem for me as I love dogs, but for someone who didn't it could be intimidating. A couple of weeks ago a big dog off the lead in the nature reserve got quite aggressive and as the owner wasn't in sight I got a bit worried. Several times dogs have grabbed the poles, which is quite funny for me, but wouldn't be if I were an older person using them for stability.

Really. IlonaM, take another look at the post - Alice is actually understating it! I've just read it twice and I'm still not sure what it means.
  4. I'd cycle to Brixton and get the tube as that's quickest, most reliable and you'll always get a seat, plus on the rare occasion the tube's shut when you get there you've got the safety net of Brixton overground to Victoria or buses. My second favourite option is the train from ED or PR to London Bridge, change there for Charing X, then walk. Faster than buses. Crossing the river on any bus route at rush hour can take ages, but if you don't mind that or you like reading on the way to work, you could get the number 12 from Barry Rd all the way to Piccadilly Circus. It's not the fastest route but as it starts at the top of Barry Rd you'll always get a seat.
  5. Maybe you could borrow a cat? Mind you, then you have to deal with bloody and mutilated corpses, so traps possibly less stomach-churning first thing in the morning.
  6. I find Victoria Coren-Mitchell unbearable, ditto her husband. Just thinking of what conversation must be like at breakfast time in their house makes me want to hit my head against the wall.
  7. I've stopped using Dulwich Woods and the nature reserve recently because I find it really annoying that dog owners completely ignore the notices about keeping dogs on a short lead during the bird breeding season.
  8. I live off the bottom of Woodwarde Rd very close to where it was and the water supply was normal all day, not even any loss of pressure. Strange, but they seemed to get it under control very quickly - unlike the leak on Tritton Road in W Dulwich, for example, which has been going on for several weeks now.
  9. It was made compulsory for all dogs to be microchipped a couple of years back so in theory they can already do that, J&B. More info on the new order, which is already in force, here: https://www.southwark.gov.uk/parks-and-open-spaces/public-space-protection-orders-pspos-regulations I find this blurb from the Govt website interesting as perception of danger seems to be as important as whether your dog is actually out of control: 'Your dog is considered dangerously out of control if it: - injures someone - makes someone worried that it might injure them A court could also decide that your dog is dangerously out of control if either of the following apply: - it attacks someone?s animal - the owner of an animal thinks they could be injured if they tried to stop your dog attacking their animal'
  10. Love Brian Friel's work. The Donmar's doing The Aristocrats later this year too.
  11. Just saw Ruthless, the Musical at the Arts Theatre. Totally brilliant and very, very funny. A great night out.
  12. In the last week the horse chestnuts, planes and (not so many around) beeches have been flowering and dropping stuff all over the place so they could be culprits. I guess the good news is that if it's just one type of tree setting you off it'll be over in a couple of weeks.
  13. Lee Scoresby, I hope your wife and her friend are feeling better. Do you know how the situation escalated? It sounds worrying that the two men shouted at them when it wasn't one of your dogs. Did they try to intervene between the men and whoever owned the dog that was involved, perhaps?
  14. According to the news a lot of people have come down with it this weekend. I'm still kind of OK and mine is grass pollen, which generally starts early to mid June for me, so if you're getting it now it could be tree (silver birch is a problem for some people but that's usually Feb-March when the catkins drop) or maybe just increased air pollution plus dust flying around as it's dry and breezy. Mildew and molds can also set me off but they're less likely to be the cause in this weather. When oil seed rape was subsidised twenty or so years ago I was streaming from early April to end of September, so I'm grateful only to have it for three to four months of the year now.
  15. Going through the park today I noticed a sign near the main cafe saying no barbecues in this area, but I saw at least three barbecues in more open areas, so maybe it depends where you put it?
  16. Although I no longer live in your ward, James, I've always been very impressed by your dedication and energy to the people you serve. Thank you for everything you've done and I'm sure you'll go on to greater things.
  17. Is there anywhere else locally that does them?

The Mary Portas one, is it Living and Giving? Or the one near the station, Clothes for Causes, which I always thought was more of a lifestyle support system for someone who wanted to build a profile as some sort of sustainability vlogger.
  19. Both pics look big for house mice and the tails are quite thick, so maybe young rats, as Louisa says. I have a trap like the one in your second pic and the mouse I caught looked much smaller in it.

So apparently did Patrick, the homeless guy in the wheelchair who was sheltering in the doorway of the Grove Tavern before they boarded it up to force him out.
  21. And the fact that everyone, including the 'lawmakers', is subject to the same laws once they're in force. Ditto rulers - that was the point of Magna Carta, which is still what many Brits recognise as the basis of this country's constitution.
  22. There's a grey and white tabby round about 5 Court Lane that's always had an aggressive streak. If it's still the same one it sometimes used to run out of its garden to have a go at people walking past (got me several times).
  23. There are a few past threads on this that you might find useful. It seems animal shelters don't take them unfortunately.
  24. I have a huge respect for the Queen herself but I'd like to see an end to the practice of awarding titles and honours to her family. So anachronistic.
  25. Are you mixing up your princes, uncleglen? The OP is about the wedding of the sixth in line to the throne (the one whose provenance has been questioned for 30 years) to the American divorcee (the one who wants to be royal so she can 'give women a voice' (eh?) but who doesn't want to follow royal protocols on dress and behaviour).
