Equifax data breach - any experiences/advice?
Robert Poste's Child replied to Robert Poste's Child's topic in The Lounge
Thanks; yes, I'd looked at those - MSE always useful for financial misbehaviour. The most interesting thing I learned is not that nearly 700,000 people's mobile numbers were leaked, rather a lot more than the 400,000 they said originally: it's that there were a further estimated 14.5 million people - that's nearly a quarter of the UK adult population - whose names and dates of birth were leaked but Equifax has deemed this 'not a significant risk' and has no plans to inform them. -

Equifax data breach - any experiences/advice?
Robert Poste's Child replied to Robert Poste's Child's topic in The Lounge
All seems to be a whitewash. -
I got a letter from Equifax telling me that my data has been breached. Their so-called helpline (including the numbers listed on their website for complaints) put you, via a very bad line, to a call centre in Manilla (not the most reassuring tactic they could have chosen - presumably the irony is lost on them). If you don't feel comfortable with the above, the only option appears to be to escalate a oomplaint in writing - SLA apparently two months; again, not very reassuring. The questions I want to ask are: 1. Given the breach happened in May 2017, why has it taken 6-7 months to inform me? 2. Are they protecting my information more effectively now? How? 3. The letter says the breach 'included' my name, DOB and phone number. What does 'included' mean in this context - is it limited to these items only or might other data (banks, credit cards, address history, partner/child status, driving licence, occupation/employers, electoral roll...) have been compromised? 4. The letters offers ways to check on fraudulent activity, but as far as I can see only from here on. How do I check for activity between May and now? Have/can they check(ed) my record for signs of any fraudulent activity rather than making it my responsibility? I'm angry that this is a form of data use we have no control over - we can't opt out, and, as anyone who's ever tried it knows, identifying incorrect information in your record and getting it changed is very difficult as they act like it's their information rather than yours. I called the Financial Ombudsman and was advised that as it relates to data they can't do anything. Apparently the province of the ICO, whatever that is. Does anyone have any personal experiences or advice to offer? Thanks.

Thwarted burglary? 3am doorbell
Robert Poste's Child replied to legalalien's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
It's becoming worryingly difficult to get support from the police in non-emergency situations. In the last few weeks I filed a crime report online (no response apart from the automated one), called 101 (permahold + 'we're busy dealing with emergencies' message - why, when I called the non-emergency number?) and called the local Safer Neighbourhood Team ('no one available right now', left a message, no response). Sad lack of funding means petty criminals have been given tacit permission to do as they like, with no fear of consequences, and we're now on our own. -

It's a FOX, Sue. Maitre Corbeau, sur un arbre perch?, tenait dans son bec un fromage. Maitre Renard, par l'odeur allech?, lui teint ? peu pr?s ce langage. You can guess the rest. Half a chance and it would have been in through the car window and out again with a string of sausages between its jaws. -

Fairy from the top of the Christmas tree? -
That's really interesting, and useful to hear about it from someone with professional knowledge. Out of interest, is there anywhere else in the area where you find yourself thinking the same thing?

Dog poo on car roof in Dulwich Village.
Robert Poste's Child replied to Delawis Delaw's topic in The Lounge
Not a car roof, but tonight I passed a man eating a takeaway in his car in a quiet residential street. What he didn't appear to see was the fox a few feet away on the opposite side of the road, lying in the shadow of a parked car, staring intently at his half-open window... I stood watching for a few minutes but it didn't move until some more people came down the street talking loudly. Think the guy had a close call there. -
Any favourite quorn recipes?
Robert Poste's Child replied to Robert Poste's Child's topic in The Lounge
Sounds nice. Yesterday I did a kind of Greek stew: loads of of onion, peppers, tomatoes and (slight anomaly) mushrooms, with quorn chunks, kalamata olives and a little of the olive vinegar, and a handful of spinach added at the end. It was delicious. Taking the leftovers to work for lunch tomorrow. -

First catch your tempeh, though. Looks like Planet Organic has it so Wholefoods probably does too. -
I can't comment on their hygiene but I did speak to the manager once after seeing a mouse running around one of the aisles in the middle of the day. You also have to watch that the price at the till is the same as the one on the shelf. Customer Services will refund you the difference but it always seems wrong to me. Not as bad as Superdrug, though, where it seems to be part of their business model.

Dog poo on car roof in Dulwich Village.

Well, I wouldn't go that far. But I see about 8 a day on average, they make a lot of noise, they leave a lot of poo and scent marking, and they regularly make a mess of the bins. -

I saw a fox pooing in the back of my neighbour's truck a couple of weeks ago. Village is overrun with them. -
Any favourite quorn recipes?
Robert Poste's Child replied to Robert Poste's Child's topic in The Lounge
Thanks for that. Had a quick google and it looks like it has some similarities to quorn in that it's made via fermentation involving mycoprotein, but with 10% fat and 20% protein it's more comparable to meat nutritionally; also in calories at about 190 per 100g. Quorn has about 90 cals / 100g, with 14.5g protein and 2g fat, so good for me at the moment as trying to lose a few pounds, but tempeh sounds like it would be great for when you're cooking for a mixed group of vegetarians and non-vegetarians. -

Thanks. Will give them a try. -
Is it me or are quorn chunks actually nicer than chicken? After trying them recently I've just made a sort of goulash with them too and it's better than the pork version. Feeling inspired to try more. Does anyone have any really good quorn recipes they'd like to share? Particularly anything with Thai flavours.

Standing outside the library waiting for it to open, shivering in my big coat, I saw a man in shorts and open sandals walking his dog. -
Probably in library or newsagent opposite between 5.30pm (ironically I had it until then as I used it to try to do something about the keys I found just before that)and 7.55pm when the library closed. Please PM if found. No value to anyone but me as on its last legs and not updatable. ETA was at library, where I thought I'd left it, luckily. Good start to the day, and many thanks to the library for looking after it for me overnight.
