All sounds just like our experience in 1997 - plus ca change ! Good luck everyone - it's a horrible way to start school life and I sympathise with you and your children . -
Parking ticket in Bromley, advice please?
intexasatthe moment replied to dullwitch's topic in The Lounge
Same applies in parts of Peckham ,eg Bellenden Rd . They just have signs to indicate that you are entering a zone ,but if you don't know about them it's easy to assume that single yellow ok after 1.30 on a sat. -
James I'm still waiting ( since Nov last year ) for your clarification on entrance requirements for Southwark secondary schools. At the moment we have Faith Schools - individual entry requirements Charter - geographical Kingsdale - 3 bands ,lottery within those bands + scholorships Bacons - inner and outer catchement areas + banding Harris Federation - 9 bands reflecting national rather than local attainment How can parents make sense of this ? How can schools "results " be compared when there are so many different criteria for entrance? How is it helpful for primary school kids to sit assessment tests for the schools that band ? How can this be described as a " common entrance policy " ?

For your advice to pull away in 2nd gear when driving on icy roads. This has made so much difference ,and I'm busy being a know it all and spreading the word. Oh ,someone also told me to " drive as if you have an egg under the accelerator peddle " ,and under the brake. I did know that ,but think the graphic description helps somehow !

James - not sure if I should address these to Southwark myself ( perhaps you or someone could give me a link ,not keen to phone ) but 1 I haven't seen any evidence of either Lordship Lane or Barry Rd being gritted . They seem to be trying to do pavements ,although yesterday's attempts seemed to fail because the grit was so wet that it just clogged the dispenser ( new hand pushed yellow cart things ). Barry Rd was closed both ways between 4 and 7.30 pm last night with people dragging shopping home to Dawsons Heights ,school kids trying to get home to Croydon because a bendy bus couldn't get any traction and blocked the road. Barry Rd is now really icy and it would be dreadful if the same thing happened again. Up at the library junction a van was stuck this morning at 8 30 trying to turn left into Barry Rd so I think parts of Lordship Lane not too good either. Will they be gritted later ,earlier ,whenever deemed most effective ,today ? 2 The treatment to the junction of Eynella and Court Lane with it's raised hump and paviours ( called that ? )has made that area really prone to freezing and has for last few weeks been like an ice rink. Probably not noticeable at moment because everywhere icy. I guess the stone blocks freeze/are more slippery than the usual tarmac road surface ? If I guess right - surely bad idea to have at road junctions ?

help an OAP, disabled or neighbour in ED
intexasatthe moment replied to bob's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
They are going to discuss this on BBC London radio this morning. Have said they're getting legal advice. -
Bendy bus skidded starting journey from Etherow St and has been blocking Barry Rd both ways since 4 pm. Big up for the sole Bus driver who has taken it upon himself to direct traffic at junction of Goodrich . Surface of Barry Rd seems to be mixture of slush and ice. Watched several vans with spinning wheels.

Dangers Associated With Cholesterol Drugs
intexasatthe moment replied to JustinSmith's topic in The Lounge
Hmmm...my brother recently had heart attack. While in hospital he and sister in law were questioning staff about his cholesterol level which they thought was low - think 4 . Staff said should aim for it to be lower .Brother asked " how low ? " . Thought the answer " Well it can't be too low ." was a bit odd.
