  1. The Dulwich Experiment.
  2. > MelborneGr pointed out that they were in the area closer to the Village - that seemed to make sense. All are within the old Camberwell Bourough Council boundary. Access to education worked very differently in pre-ILEA (Inner London Education Authority) days. East Dulwich children ~were~ funded by the LCC (London County Council) to attend the "posh" Dulwich schools. Dulwich College now quaintly refers to this period as "The Dulwich Experiment".
  3. > I think that MelborneGr has given me the best idea. ???? William Penn was a Secondary Modern school for boys. When it opened its technical training facilities were amongst the best in South East London. The LCC paid for scholarships for East Dulwich boys and girls to go to the 'posh' schools. 50 years ago where you went to school depended less upon the wealth of your family.
  4. I see that Oliver Bonas is almost ready to open. Perhaps there will be first day discounts.
  5. Seems that Councillor Barber has ignored this thread again.
  6. Is this a commericial venture presented as a community initiative? As I remember it, the initial BARA posting about the 100-hour pharmacy was not exactly reliable.
  7. Which stores in East Dulwich actually sell exotic bottled waters?
  8. I note that Councillor Barber ignored this thread.
  9. http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/ViewGazetteDocument.aspx?src=search&atdocid=4670703&pg=1&GeoType=London&st=adv&sb=date&FDay=1&FMth=1&FYr=2008&TDay=17&TMth=2&TYr=2008&exact="dulwich%20life" Well, I can't get the link to work, but it's there.
  10. > The people I feel sorry for are those whose pensions may be affected. People whose pension fund had/have Northern Rock shares? Next London & Scottish?
  11. I'm reasonably sure that Sax Rohmer had Nayland Smith visiting East Dulwich, but it must be a good 40 years since I read that Fu Manchu novel.
  12. > Macroban, if the survey is not delivered efficiently then how reliable will the results be durr. Reliable in producing the desired result?
  13. So, will this be the EDF postcard for 2008?
  14. No matter the accidental problems with this survey; when it is completed, the results will be the only data in town. Unless, of course, someone wants to hit the streets with an alternative survey.
  15. The ED Warehouse seems to be coming along nicely and it's only three months old.
  16. How long is the East Dulwich garden path?
  17. Black market in sterilising equipment.
  18. Brockers? Oh well, I don't have many 21st century years left.
  19. I like Nick Lowe's song "American Squirm". Goes something like: "I made an American squirm and it felt so good..".
  20. > IF the survey results show the majority of residents in an area do want Controlled Parking we would seek a formal Controlled Parking Zone review. Money from the developer for a formal review was agreed as part of the Planning Gain Section 106 agreement for 72 Grove Vale. Interesting and clever contingent planning gain.
  21. I think the 1865 Plough would be off-photo-right.
  22. Yet more praise for this excellent establishment today. Overall there have been dozens of posts on the East Dulwich Forum praising the Dulwich Supermarket for their stock selection, competetive prices, and friendly customer service. But all this praise has been spread (buried) over a large number of threads. If it had all been consolidated in one thread it would have made a greater impact.
  23. The photo looks like Lordship Lane just North of The Plough. The original The Plough Building was a clapperboard(?) cottage similar to those in the photo.
  24. Three months on... Which local pharmacies have increased their opening hours as "promised" to compensate East Dulwich for being denied a 100-hour pharmacy?
