  1. Today is a very nice early Spring day in East Dulwich. Blue skies may be overhead later.
  2. What a dreadful web-site. I have no recollection of a Marmite factory at Camberwell Green. In the 1950s anyone getting the 185 bus from East Dulwich to Victoria would be familiar with the smell of the Marmite factory at Vauxhall. Could the Camberwell Green factory be an error that has been copied from web-site to web-site?
  3. > Taking it out on Foxtons isn't going to solve anything. Well, it would get rid of Foxtons.
  4. > Please don't fall for this. That would have been my line until recently. I believe that 2008/09 will be different and that giving the Livesey ?140k will mean taking it away from elsewhere.
  5. The latest document which I have seen explaining the Southwark Council 2008/09 budget contextis here. Does anyone have an update of this or an alternative more recent document? I don't think it is a matter of whether the Livesey is "cost-effective, high performing and fit for purpose", but that there will just not be enough money not matter how good it is (and it is). If the Livesey does get the money then something else will have to be stopped, closed, or reduced. If we say the Livesey should get the money then as citizens we should also be saying what should not get money. That is the reality of the 2008/09 budget. I would hope however that the Livesey can be placed in moth balls to await better times.
  6. Can anyone confirm the funding position for 2008/09?
  7. We could swap the East Dulwich potholes for the Bellenden Village bollards.
  8. I quite like the Bellenden Village metal bollards and think they would suit Lordship Lane very well. As Bellenden Village has now had its ten years of public subsidy perhaps we could now ask Southwark Council to move the bollards from SE15 to SE22.
  9. Unfortunately, yes, there are more, but I would only post information here when the owner has chosen to put the information in the public domain ~and~ I can support a posting with documentary evidence. Anything else would be unfair on a business which may still be trying to trade itself through and out of difficult times.
  10. > wasnt as deep but two quarters of negative growth = a recession by economists' efinitions, so was a recession Yes, it was a mere tiddler of a recession.
  11. > there was a recession in 1991 Macro That was merely a slight down turn compared with the 1979-1982 recession. There are many web-sites with the data if you wish to review them. Only anecdotal I know, but check out how many of today's Lordship Lane independents were there in 1978.
  12. > this is a recession approaching I hope not. The last recession which ran from 1979 to 1982 was very nasty. More recent economic problems since 1982 have just been slowdowns.
  13. > I wonder why Parkhill Properties aren't snapping these up? As far as I know they only buy freeholds. The freehold of the anonymous restaurant is for sale at ?1.2m.
  14. http://www.christie.com/publications/38 They have a slow server - you may need to be patient.
  15. See here (page 9)
  16. Details here. Can anyone identify it?
  17. > A recession perhaps? cash in quickly while enough people prepared to still take a chance. > if that is the case - which of ED's businesses will be most vulnerable to a recession? I have raised this question before. I think the consensus was that East Dulwich would not have a recession.
  18. > Where is Raisin? It was in the same parade as Bubble 'n' Squeak.
  19. There's no sign of any activity or a replacement business. Does anyone have information?
  20. Something needs to happen soonish else the parade will be like a ghost town.
  21. There is an up side. The turnover may be distributed between the other bars and compensate for the downturn.
  22. Perhaps Puffin will adjust their stock range so that East Dulwich still has a stationers.
  23. > having to stand in the kitchen sink to have a wash Makes me feel quite superior. We could sit on the draining board.
  24. Perhaps BARA could apply to Southwark Council for a grant to sort out this problem.
