Best of luck at Ashburton Grove, Atila. Let's hope we dust off those Spurs cobwebs from Weds and give Birmingham a good hiding - looking at the predictions of the forumites I'm off to the bookies to put a pony on a 3 - 0 win to the Gooners.

Yep, who'd of thought that a thread about how to speak to your dentist would generate such traffic.

Has she had her telegram from the Queen? Though I guess these days its a text message.

Got home safe and sound. I knew I wouldn't end up in hospital - just kinda like tempting fate in a perverse sort of way. sorry to hear about the ED Grove accident. Hope its not too serious. Sorry to hear about your spill, Harris.

*don't worry Lozzy, I skank in appropriately muffled manner*
-
"There are stages?" Yep - apparently *Bob* should be on one.

Sorry Harris, I am a fellow cyclist and my journey is about five miles from ED to Beckenham but I am generally amazed at how considerate most drivers are. I've been cycling in London for about 8 years and never had an accident. In that time I've come accross a few moronic drivers but in truth not that many. However I am perfectly happy to recognise that just because I've not come into contact with them doesn't mean they ain't there. (just about to ride home in a minute - so as sod's law will have it, probably end up in hospital tonight)

Oh God, yes please, let Spurs give Chelski a good walloping.
-
*darts in, with head down* *hiya Lozzy, you came in to escape the brickbats out there?* *and the grenades* *I'll join you in a galss of Gluwein if you don't mind* *don't worry, it'll calm down at the weekend*

Sean, naturally, children are to be treated differently in some circumstances - like for example I think it's entirely right that kids should not be allowed to drive cars. But being in a room with soft furnishings is something that most kids can handle very ably. So spending an afternoon in a pub with a responsible adult is not an issue. If they are behaving badly, then that is another matter. The behaviour should be dealt with.

Courtesy and Interest or Politically Incorrect?
citizenED replied to Marmora Man's topic in The Lounge
Rolo "BTW this is post 300 for me which is quite suprising as I thought i'd never bother making it to 50." Is that since the name change, or after it? -

Courtesy and Interest or Politically Incorrect?

Its not what you say, its the way you say it. If you complement someone on their beautiful accent before wondering where they are from you are unlikely to cause offence. -
Which is all so terribly contrary. When the kids of ED felt the backlash...

On this thread and on that other one about the same issue there is some pretty lazy thinking going on. I'm sure I don't always think things through properly before posting but lets be a little objective here. Lets be a bit more philosophical. We should all know that stereotypically catagorising groups of people is sloppy at the best of times. We should not judge any people by their outward appearance. Better to judge by types of behaviour. In the initial post on this thread the writer comments "my heart sinks when I go into a pub for a nice quiet pint with my newspaper only to be confronted with screaming and howling kids". I think everyone's heart sinks when that happens just as it would when you go into a pub and find screaming, howling adults or lecherous, yobbish youth. It's the behaviour that should be focused on, not the type of person exhibiting the behaviour. From the fact that there are some screaming, howling kids should not lead you to conclude that all kids do that. Simple. I hate to do this, but if, in the initial post on this thread, you were to substitute the word children for any other group of people, say, women/gays/asians, well that would not be very nice.

No Jah, I am not confusing anything about the writing of "Can't get you out of my Head" - that is down to Paul Morley, for it was him, honest governor what said it was Rob Davis: I am the humble messenger, so please don't shoot! However, further to Mockney's post re Wikipedia and Cathy Dennis, my own little bit of snoopery found this quote in Sound on Sound magazine: "Rob Davis is one of the most successful professional songwriters in Britain. With Cathy Dennis, he wrote and produced Kylie Minogue's 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head',"

I listened to the first half of the Arsenal game on Radio 5. Just before they scored Spurs were creating chances with embarrassing ease. I couldn't listen to the second half. Didn't have enough change for the swear box. When are supporters gonna be honest. Spurs were the better side and had they won, they would have deserved it. Jeez.

Jah, you say Kylie's Can't Get You Out Of My Head was written by Cathy Dennis. According to Paul Morley it was written by Rob Davies, formally of Mud. PGC - you say yours was Can't Help Falling in Love - Elvis. Funnily enough, Morley reckoned a test for any great Pop sng was whether you could imagine it sung by Elvis. Works surprisingly well for "can't get you out of my Head" but somehow can't imagine him doing justice to "This Charming Man"

I thought Madonna's "Like a Prayer", might feature - it did in the programme, but not on the list. With "Freak like Me" he was getting three for the price of one considering that it is an amalgamation of Gary Numan's "Are Friend's Electric" and Adina Howard's er.."Freak Like Me"

I know some of you guys were out on Tuesday but you missed Paul Morley on BBC4 talking about pop music; he rolled his narrative round the (inevitable) list of architypal pop songs: fascinating. Can't get you out of my head - Kylie Ride a White Swan - T-rex Lola - The Kinks This Charming Man - The Smiths What do you Want - Adam Faith Freak Like Me - the Sugarbabes

But guys, a-l-t-e-r-n-a-t-i-v-e-s? You have to ask yourselves, what was the alternative in 1997? Another term of the Tories. I would agree that Blair was a disappointment but part of this was becuase he came in on such a crest of a wave. The whole country celebrated! That euphoria was not imagined. It was something tangible and now, ten years on we have a Labour party in power, economic stability, loads of welfare money and lots of rules regarding peoples rights. A fundamentally better situation. "New" Labour means plenty of spin, but it is the spin that allows them to put in policies that make real social change. Brown has had an awful start to his tenure - but when you start to think of the alternatives he will climb out of it.
