Ha! Just choked on my coke BBW! :D

That's a great question Don Carnelli, and I remember it myself, but as with you I can't place it. Very frustrating. Wasn't Love Actually was it?

Gosh, I can't believe how rude you're being to EHughes, although it's a bit unfortunate to copy and paste the header at the top of the message. It's just another non-descript reality show, they're not pooing on your doorstep (and the perpetrator of that got more sympathy!). Surely keeping people entertained has a role to play in our fine society (as of course does digging up roads)? Viewers love this stuff, and a lot of people love their fifteen minutes of fame. I'm not sure that people could get paid for appearing other than expenses - that would make them actors?

Civic pride? Surely this forum is a case study!

We? Is PR coming out as the brains behind this scheme?

Can someone do me the favour of fugging this data for me: "In Gaza, the Jewish settlers numbered only 8,000 in 2005 compared with 1.4 million local residents. Yet the settlers controlled 25% of the territory, 40% of the arable land and the lion's share of the scarce water resources." I find it extraordinary, but unsupported. Can someone bitch slap me with somthing better?

SMG, I tried to work through your bizarre debate but ended up with nowt. Where are you going in the greater scheme of things?

Is it only humans that go to heaven? Is this in the Bible? Bah!

Quite right SimonM, although I don't think the lack of demand applies either to this shop or the one on North Cross Road.

Hmmm, I guess it would depend upon what kind of nurses were covered by the description. The Royal College of Nursing has 49,000 members in London covering a population of 6 million. This means they're on average of 0.8% of the total population. Apply this to ED ward's 5,000 residents and you'd come to around 40-50. However, as SimonM pointed out, we've got a couple of hospitals nearby and we're comparatively middle class and cheap compared with some of our neighbours. We've also got some dedicated housing. I wouldn't be surprised if they were 4-5 times higher than average - 200 or more? Would it be on the census?

As you face the Sub-Zero Temperatures to return to work today..
Huguenot replied to Tony.London Suburbs's topic in The Lounge
No thanks mate, you'll never see me in living in Blighty again. But the EDF kind of transcends the old woman doesn't it? It has an ethereal personality that renders borders meaningless. Even ED issues - the gossip, water shortages and recycling - are macro issues really: the conversation could take place anywhere. Perhaps signposting issues are a condensation of more metaphorical issues facing society? ;-) To insist that I crave ED as a consequence of my presence in these esteemed pages is illogical in that light, it would be like saying you want to live in Manchester if you read the Guardian? I live vicariously on this thread, experiencing all the excitment, but none of the inconvenience. Regardless, here it is warm, and I am happy. :) Off to Laos in two weeks time, just back from Borneo... -
Has the ED housing market reached the bottom yet ( II )

Hmmmm 31 degrees C here at the moment, might go for a quick dip in the pool. Apparently you can still exchange our currency for goods and services too... -
Lovely Ladies:A Question re: Your Future Husbands "ex"
Huguenot replied to Tony.London Suburbs's topic in The Lounge
HA! I'd have been in all sorts of trouble at my own wedding ;-) Still, I never shagged my best man... -
I can't put it better... "In the three years after the withdrawal from Gaza, 11 Israelis were killed by rocket fire. On the other hand, in 2005-7 alone, the IDF killed 1,290 Palestinians in Gaza, including 222 children." This is a fine opinion piece.

KD you're a very sweet chap. Your neighbours should work harder! On the li'l ol' lady, please take my concern and consideration for here well being as given, but.. I feel that we should have a responsibility to our community that sits hand-in-hand with our ego. It's not responsible to create derelict high streets by restricting access to commercial property. It's turning into an ED habit, with the place adjacent to Blue mountain as a further example. Planning permission should work both ways - we're not entitled to turn our front rooms into shops, and we shouldn't be allowed to turn shops into front rooms. It's f*cked up. (Yes I know, broken record, I have posted on this before ;-))

Whatever you like re. PC. I don't think jokes designed to belittle, humiliate or reinforce negative prejudices carry much wit. That particular quip would have left nothing but tumbleweed and an unpleasant taste.

Can't be the South London Ring Main, hasn't even been dug yet ;-)
-
I don't get that - does it mean Eastern Europeans are too poor for sanitary products, too unpleasant for sanitary products, too witless for sanitary products or something even more unnecessary? Either way BBW, I'm guessing you've just substituted one very unwelcome racial prejudice with another - what did 'Eastern European' say before you pasted it in there? If I'm being cycnical I do apologise, I'm not always the best at getting jokes of this nature. If I'm right, can you just edit it yourself?

Old sign enquiry in East Dulwich
Huguenot replied to Kingsbury David's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Lol! Case in point. They don't work well do they? Yellow is an established colour for signage denoting diversions rather than primary route, and the lettering is far too small to be read easily. These signs are just confusing and ineffective. By all means keep them as works of art, but if they're occupying key signposting areas, then they need to replaced with effective signage! Stick the old ones up somewhere else where they don't need to work ;-) -
"East Dulwich skyline has been creatively enhanced" ???
Huguenot replied to Bony Fido's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hurrah for mrssmith! You stick your head above the parapet! ;-) Although I notice on another thread you've said they're amoral and should be sued??? Does this include you then? And of course... welcome to the forum! -
Old signs removed, please act to save last one
Huguenot replied to Kingsbury David's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Ah, it kind of depends whether you see road signs as street art, or as aids to driving. Road signs get judged against various metrics: luminance, daytime visibility, contrast, night visibility, reflectivity, active illumination requirements amongst others. Road signs are also obliged to deliver consistent messaging to help drivers interpret meaning quickly in strange environments. Hence we've established regulations in size, shape and colour that differentiate between for example Stop, Give Way, One Way and Direction signs. These old signs just don't deliver in these areas. Whilst unaware of the benefits of consistency and technology 50 years ago, planners could still identify the most important places for these signs - and these are the ones that need to be vacated and replaced with more effective signage to aid motorists. If you're unaware of the obsession motorists have with effective signage, the please see threads passim about Rye Lane, and how everyone holds the council to blame for motoring miscalculation. Personally, I'd prefer to see private vehicles restricted, and the street art remain - as many readers know! -
Bookshop out Card shop in!
Huguenot replied to Richard Weekes II's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I think Richard was running chess sessions for kids in the room above the Never Ending Story bookshop. This would put the NES quite high in his priorities, and alternatives like Chener less appealing. If that was the case, I can see that the NES closure would have been frustrating for him, particularly if (as it appeared) they didn't keep him very well informed. I can also see that those involved, and of course Richard, may have been seeking scapegoats. It does seem a bit unfair to blame the ED public though. If the NES didn't have enough customers, then either there weren't enough people in the market in ED, or the NES didn't sell the books they wanted to buy. I think it's rather unhealthy to force people to go to shops and buy stuff they don't want. Either way Richard, it appears that both the NES didn't sell particularly popular books, and that they didn't close for lack of customers. I tend to agree with Pickles that your post was agressive in a finger-pointy way, and you shouldn't be surprised if innocents are offended by your attack. -
As it happens olded, I couldn't work out what your point was? Will you have to move because at 30 you're too old for ED, or because people liked Inside72, or because people disliked Inside 72, or because there are new people moving to ED that you don't like, or because the new people are under 30, or because the new people are over 30? They all seem mutually exclusive reasons, but it'd be great if you could clarify?

B*llocks it isn't. A trip six months ago to a cashpoint in the West End left me with both 100 quid in my pocket and a chalk mark invitation on my coat for some tw@t to thump me and take it. Being an irritable loud-mouthed fellow the thieves probably regretted drawing attention to me. The f*cker at the cash point who striped me had the nerve to ask me what my problem was before disappearing round the corner when I engaged passers-by in the quest for a solution.
