For the first 16 years of my life holiday was going to Derbyshire for a week or 2 every year to see relatives. Luckily all the relatives lived in Derbyshire so it was a one hit does all. We really looked forward to it . My children have had holiday trips to Norfolk and Glasgow every year for the first 10 -15 years of their lives too. As grandparents have died, and the children become teenagers ( and childcare costs have disappeared), we have managed to coerce the granddads to come to us /with us sometimes, so in more recent years we have had a week or two somewhere abroad. However, I do think staying in your own bed and having long day trips out is a pretty stress free holiday.(Especially if you buy ready meals/ eat out) Dulwich during the school summer holidays is perfect, so quiet, little traffic.
