I know a few people that have housed live out au pairs- where a family effectively needs an au pair but does not have room, they reach an agreement with a friend that lives very close by. The employer pays the friend rent ( say ?150 a week) in return for a room and bills. The au pair sleeps and spends weekends in her own pad but spends the rest of the time in the family house.This includes eating there.

The main thing is 80 years. Less than that and the value decreases at a greater amount. This is because if you have over 80 years you can extend a lease relatively cheaplt. I managed a day last month without sugar. It was tough, as I just ate cheese instead:( Giving up either is very hard. Moderation, and making your own cakes and biscuits etc is helpful. Once you have made elderflower cordial and realised how much sugar you need to make it put sit into perspective.

I think the pensions thing is big, if you are of " a certain age" when pensions loom larger than your life than childcare help.

You could go back to your valuer and ask if the ground rent means the flat is worth less than their valuation.

That might work for some, but i'm afraid the family includes 2 at university and are spread around the country so there will be little discussion and tbh there is little appetite for any active management . But I think maybe I will think about that for the future. Any more ideas?
