  1. I tend to say both!

Are there two reception classes and movement between them? January starts?
  3. Oh yes, I forgot there was visit one afternoon in July where our son got to see the reception class. No home viist, but he dwas moving up from the school nursery, there was a home visit that year (in July)
  4. In my experience you hear nothing for AGES then the school gets in touch with you in early July with arrangements for September. Most schools do something like mornings only for a week or 1 day in, one day off, 2 days in... don't expect the first 2 weeks to be proper 9-3.30 days... and reception usually start back a day or two after the main school anyway. You could call the schol office to check what information they have already about September starts. Yoyu can go in to buy sweatshirts etc. I don't remember Southwark playing any further role once they have offered the place and you have accepted (worth making sure the school has your name down, just in case your acceptance goes astray!)
  5. Have been thinking about this while I was dozing earlier.. I think Huguenot's "con artist" comemnt is OTT and not borne out by the evidence and should be removed. I think Jennifer's "crime" has been to wade through FB looking for people who have an ED connection, then not just try to "friend" them herself in order to add them to her ORCA fB list, but to enrol "Autumn Ridlon" (who does seem to be a real person albeit with a rather skethcy profile.) Possibly both her profile and the other one night have belong to other ORCA frnachisees or something like that? Anyway, it's having these (American?) profiles getting involved that has made people focus on the nature of the whole business, and then being able to raise the issue here on the EDF it has been noticed that it'a a concerted campaign on FB. I really dislike this form of marketing and will steer well clear of the whole orca thing as a result. Is it a"con"? I don't think so.

And I haven't seen any comemnts which accuse Jennifer of "a major crime"
  8. HAL9000 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > The accusations of engaging in fraud and 'major > crime' (inter alia). I don't really understand your comment about how I should look this up for myself "and I'm sure you know why" (and I really should be off the internet doing something else but I have been through this thread very carefully and all I can find are these three remarks: * With those little cheats you've been caught out with above, it seems Jenn that you have less of a socialist ambition, and more of a flair for manipulation and deception? * I think the only success you're likely to attract is an appearance on Watchdog alongside timeshare sharks. * Setting up fake IDs to your personal financial advantage is a confidence trick. It's simply a confidence trick. Whether you like it or not, or whether you're willing to admit it or not, that makes you a con artist.
  9. Where does it say that, precisely?
  10. I am a site mod on another site and we have had to deal with this sort of issue on many occasions. I haven't got time tight this minute to read back through this thread with a fine toothcomb, but I'd be interested to know which particular comments you feel to be defamatory?
  11. I have posted on the thread itself wth some relevant case law. I have some experience as a site mod elsewhere with those who threaten legal action if they don't like a particular discussion. But if a statement is true, then that is always a defence. http://www.lawdit.co.uk/reading_room/room/view_article.asp?name=../articles/5176-Bulletin-Boards-Slander-Or-Libel.htm "Mr Justice Eady said that the comments were likely to be considered as 'fair comment' i.e. they cannot be considered as defamatory if they are posted without malice and represent the posters honest views...Opinions may be expressed in exaggerated and strident terms; the only requirement is that they be honestly held. ... Even if they reached their conclusions in haste, or on incomplete information, or irrationally, the defence would still avail them." "
  12. Some more recent case law regarding the status of discussions on bulletin boards being more slander than libel... http://www.lawdit.co.uk/reading_room/room/view_article.asp?name=../articles/5176-Bulletin-Boards-Slander-Or-Libel.htm I think some of Huguenot's comments are certainly robust in their tone. However, if it is in fact true that fake FB ids have been created in order to push the ED ORCA site up site rankings, then that in itself would be a valid defence. You can't be found guilty of libel if what you have said is true. Also, this extract from that law review seems very pertinent: "comments were likely to be considered as 'fair comment' i.e. they cannot be considered as defamatory if they are posted without malice and represent the posters honest views...Opinions may be expressed in exaggerated and strident terms; the only requirement is that they be honestly held. " There is a tendency for people to rush to intimidate site owners when they don't like comments made about them, threatening possible legal action. This has the effect of stifling free speech.
  13. Think we might head to Sydenham wells later if anyone fancies that...
  14. I was very unhappy with the ORCA person and disatisfied with the way she explained her conduct on facebook and how she came to try to friend me there as I am quite protective of my privacy. I hope her decided to sponsor the forum wasn't an attempt to stifle discussion. The thread had descended into namecalling though.

  16. Toast, my understanding re reception appeals (as class sizes are limited by law to 30) is the grounds for an appeal are incredibly strict, more so than for standard appeals, and likely to succeed only "if the child would have been offered a place if the admission arrangements had been properly implemented or if the decision to refuse admission was one which no reasonable authority would have made i.e. it was unreasonable or wholly irrational." In the event she was successful, then if a place didn't become available via movement, the child can be an exception for ne year only, after that if the class size hadn't reduced via mobility, the LA would need to establish a bulge class or have mixed age classes or something equally radical http://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:0OGmepcBxhkJ:www.dcsf.gov.uk/sacode/downloads/ManagingComplianceSept08.pdf+uk+infnat+class+sizes+appeals+law&hl=en&gl=uk&pid=bl&srcid=ADGEESj6oG_t2yvN5vcKl71aIXyN5LVPU6i_dmNvZeY2Z5kLStVNmR8rpPErhAvRbfYS5BUfWM--Q1LobhpSp1ZnLxj6XiKkHakz88FoMDq141dir1NH-LPuCua0XI6qOaEIAiVp_QVZ&sig=AHIEtbTKMP_zgwbFKVLR9JshKNzn7uG6Xg http://www.schooladmissionappeals.co.uk/?p=218
  17. went to ruskin easy parking northway rd but not 12-2
  18. Southwark has a call centre.. you don't get to speak to tge relevant staff. When I had issues years back with son no 1 and nursery place I rang and explained it all... inc fhe fact it was a nursery admission. "Heber... that's a secondary school, yes?" was the response
  19. St Johns criteria here: https://www.southwark.gov.uk/downloads/download/1164/the_schools_pages_33_to_66 Not a community school

Closest community school. VA schools wouldn't normally come under that heading. Call Southwark to ask which is your nearest community school, to clarify this?
  21. Hoping Mr F will be home early and if he is will still venture out (or to a paddling pool!)
