Weather experts - are you thinking snow in the coming week ?
dbboy replied to intexasatthe moment's topic in The Lounge
The snow is now settling on pavements and the road surface. Can no longer see Canary Wharf, it's been whited out. And as soon as it's started its stopped again with a bit of bluish cloudy sky replacing the previous white sky. The snow just can't make up its mind if it wants to fall or continue to tease us with intermittent showers. -
A very simple solution exists, rather than manufacturers and supermarkets packaging all most everything in plastic/plastic wrap, they should wrap using paper based materials. The paper materials could then simply go into the recycling waste bins. It would make a huge difference. If you go to a bakers they put the bread into a paper bag, likewise the green grocers put the veg into brown paper bags, the butchers put goods into plastic/paper so it is possible to wrap using paper rather than plastic. At one time Lidl sold reusable paper carrier bags but since the 5p charge everything is plastic. BTW the quality of the 5p plastic bags seems to vary considerably. It is possible but society has become to reliant on living a convenience lifestyle which resulted in so much plastic being used combined probably with the cheapness of plastic wrap in comparison to paper based materials.

Currentlu a mixture of blue / grey sky with white cloud, you'll know when its going to snow, the sky becomes totally white and you can no longer see canary wharf and most of east London. -
btw multiples of 10's is best for questionnaires, makes analysis much easier.

Mayor of London Consultation - cleaner air
dbboy replied to Butland's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The Mayor seems to want to slow the traffic to walking pace. There was this idea that if traffic is restricted to 20mph oh that would deter drivers using their vehicles. Drivers find 20mph is hard to maintain, and again journeys as a result take much longer, The whole idea of roads is that you want traffic to move smoothly and continuously, not to have stop at every 50ft. Just take a look at the mess the council made by putting removing the zebra crossing and replacing it with traffic lights at the bottom of Forest Hill Road. What was the result, traffic backs up in both directions, before that scheme was put in place the traffic flowed down Forest Hill Road, Not any more. Please think about the decisions these pen pushing bureaucrats are making "on our behalf" And locally on Lordship lane this ridiculous extension of pavements does nothing but slow the traffic, another example on Crustal Palace Parade where the council in their infinite wisdom (not) are extending the widths of teh pavements, all to slow traffic flow. FFS has nobody in the glistening towers where these decisions are made have realised all this does is further reduce and more importantly slow the traffic so it sits at traffic lights spurting out fumes we all breath in, which leads to premature deaths. Just the other side of the Elephant and Castle the cycle highways restrict the normal flow of traffic, resulting in it backing up. Try crossing Blackfriars bridge, before the lights were changed traffic flowed freely, not any more. People will travel by train more but they are packed in like sardines and the costs are prohibitory. Travelling around London is no fun any more, everything takes so much longer, even just getting to Peckham fron Woodvale. Maybe the answer is to use the back streets to cut through on a push bike!!!!! -
New council vandalism in PR Park? (change of lighting)
dbboy replied to Lee Scoresby's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
No, she was not personally but was collectively responsible. I'd rather repro's than those hideous replacements. What can you mean it is less disruptive to wild life, any light can be disruptive to wild life, this is a spurious argument used by the council to impose their will on us. Who pays for it, we do. Likewise ligjt pollution, - again a spurious argument that has been used, when was light deemed as being polluting. It is their for a purpose to light up the area in teh vicinity of the posts. In the opinion of the council they deemed them to be decrepit, of course they would because they wanted to remove what was there currently. Why not reinstate another repro?? For the area they have been palaced in these new modern lights are just plain like a fish out of water. If the rye was surrounded by concrete buildings, then I suppose it would make little difference, but they are not. Most of the housing is Victorian, so why not replace like with like, if as the council state it was decrepit. And who took the repro's? Where have they gone? Did someone get to take them home to sell on an auction site? You bet they did? I don't trust this current local administration as far as I can chuck them. -
New council vandalism in PR Park? (change of lighting)
dbboy replied to Lee Scoresby's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Yep, I read her comments but do not agree with them. I'm sure the majority of people would have much preferred the columns replaced like for like. Could they have not replaced the posts but kept the Victorian lanterns. By the way what has happened to them? Cllr, you can make all the excuses for why they were replaced, they are totally out of character and quite simply ugly. Thanks for spoiling the area with these monstrosities as an example of "modernisation". -

Shame to see the beautiful Victorian style multi directional lights replaced by those ugly out of character single directional lights. Why? -
Yeah, I saw the impact of the event the Hornimans ran a few years ago, It was not pleasant, be prepared for major disruption and upheaval in the name of fun, when the population of the area will swell by 35% (9000 people) How will it impact on local bus services, will they continue to run between Peckham Rye and Forest Hill Road?
-
The Herne is unlikely to be sufficiently large enough to accommodate the numbers wishing to attend, would be better to hold it in Harris Boys School directly opposite.
-
I feel sorry for those properties who are in clear proximity of the park for the noise, disruption and mess they will have to endure. James - Can you confirm or find out from Council Officers if Peckham Rye from the junction of Barry Road to the junction of Forest Hill Road will remain open to normal traffic during this event, i.e. 63 and 363 bus routes or will they be curtailed to the Heaton Arms??
-
P68 you're correct, it was a one off and after the amount of complaints as a result of the behaviour of those attending it was thankfully never repeated Think of the chaos over a weekend plus the other seven days that part of the park will be closed off. IF as reported - local railway stations are to be closed it will be a huge inconvenience to the local population isolating Dulwich. Honor Oak, Brockley and Forest Hill stations will not cope with huge numbers and buses will be bursting at the seams. The only people likely to prosper will be local shops.
-
The Horniman's Museum ran a massive event a few years ago. Surrounding roads turned into "car parks", with people attending parking anywhere they could find, across peoples drives etc, gardens used at toilets, food, waste packaging chucked everywhere and loud music. If all local stations are to be closed over that weekend, do you mean, Peckham Rye, East, North and West Dulwich?? Which others do you believe will be closed?? Have you had any discussions with local councillors??

Conways approach to fixing pot holes - Take one shovel, collect some tarmac on said shovel, tip into pot hole, with back of shovel tap it down (but not too hard), if all else fails stamp on it. Arghhhh that's done, move onto next offending pot hole. They call this a temporary fix, but it then becomes forgotten about I'd suggest a more professional approach needs to be used to repair the pot hole, unfortunately no pride in the work they do, just bodge it and scarper.
-
Have pm'd you
-
yes but they can happily waste funds on work that does not need doing, does not male sense.
-
Why was the resurfacing of Underhill deferred this year?
-
20mph doesn't work, you can't actually safely travel at that speed and it is actually a cause of accidents. Hope they do a proper repair to the wall rather than bodge it and scarper.
