Add me to the list of mildly irritated users. However, I understand completely why the Forum should have them. And, if - at the end of the day - they mean a better forum for us, then so be it. I'd much rather have this forum with ads than go without it altogether.
  2. Ooops - another moment of madness. Forgot to include the recipe. Voila. Posted by: Narnia February 27, 10:07PM You need a circular tin for cooking it in. Grease it or sprinkle some flour into it 2lbs plain flour white/brown or mixture 2 teaspoons of cream of tartar 1 teaspoon on bicarbonate of sode 1 teaspoon of salt Sieve all into a large bowl. Make a hole in the centre and gradually add 1pt of milk. Keep stirring with a knife. Knead the mixture with your hands. This can take a few minutes. If it's too mushy add more flour. Place mixture in the container.Make a cross in the dough to let the fairies out during cooking. Put in oven 220 degrees for 1.5 hours. Cover with tin foil after an hour. Baking may take less time depending on the oven. Place on tray to cool. Make sure you eat some before it's cool as it's really delicious then.
  3. There you go VBC! Oh, and you do not mix on the floor - that's very important!
  4. 100 Edited coz I'm a bit dim.
  5. I re-read the entire thread very early this morning and realised that, sadly, I hadn't made some of the stuff that I said I would. I am therefore going to attempt Narnia's Irish Soda Bread this weekend - the recipe sounds simple, but am especially looking forward to "letting the fairies out".
  6. Given the comments on another thread, I thought I'd revive this.

  9. What type of leaf was it citizenED? I mean, was it a large leaf (as in Horse Chestnut) or a little leaf (as in Hawthorne)? And was the leaf stalk still attached? Was it complete with vein and a midrib too? Because they really sting! I remember a relatively small leaf (minus stalk) whacking me in the eye last year...I had to stop cycling...I thought I'd gone blind in one eye! As you say: nice! Hope you have a better journey tomorrow (though windspeeds are forecast at 16 - they were a mere 9 today:-S). Taper, I like the sound of those Merino wool socks...will definitely check them out...my toes were freezing today.
  10. Decorum Your Maj, decorum! This is not your Footie thread!! Kindly keep the filth in that thread duly ring-fenced. *attempts to look completely serious*

I agree DJKQ: I may be wrong, but I think that the figure of 25% is probably arbitrarily a bit low. Notwithstanding this, I like your idealogy DC and believe you may have hit on something. However, there would have to be a concerted effort to ensure that such a system were genuinely for the "intellectual" elite, as opposed to the "financially privileged" as in days gone by. Something we seem to be struggling to properly implement. Imagine an education sytem of such excellence based entirely on merit/intellect - wouldn't that be worth writing home about!?

Unfortunately this is already happening. For example, the University of Middlesex has proclaimed the closure of both its Philosophy and History Departments. Moreover, Sociology at the University of Birmingham and Politics at Liverpool John Moores' University have already been scapped. There are others. It is a matter for regret - I agree.
  13. *bursts out laughing and gives up* OK, OK...it was destined for The Queen's Footie Thread (or as Quids calls it, the "pure filth" thread...LOL)...
  14. *avoids eye contact with VBC* :-$
  15. My latest moment of madness: in the (no nonsense, serious) Drawing Room of ALL places! I posted my two cents' worth and provided a link - which should have been for the very high brow sounding "Institute of Fiscal Studies" - only for another poster on the thread to subsequently point out (not without some element of mocking, I should add) that the link was in fact for a bottle of Sambuca! I.e. a bottle of booze of all things! I had indeed earlier "cut and pasted" the URL for Sambuca for insertion in another thread, but somehow had not got around to actually doing it - must have got distracted. I can only assume that when I attempted to provide the link for the Institute of Fiscal studies, my computer remembered the Sambuca URL... Of ALL the places on this forum for this to happen! Utterly mortifying!:-$

There are now similar mutterings about the IMF, the OECD... hmmmmm.....

  18. Oh F-ck! (sorry Chair) How in the name of...did that happen? That link was something I was going to post on the Footie Thread - I never got around to doing it. But what then has happened to my IFS link? Crikey, how embarrassing! Worse, it just goes to show that no-one has bothered to look at it LOL! OK (*takes deep breath*). For those who give a monkey's about the Institute of Fiscal Studies' analysis on higher education reforms: click here. *crawls into nearest hole*
  19. Hmmmm, I'm guessing you haven't read the Institute for Fiscal Studies' analysis. I think you would find it interesting (link provided above):)).
  20. DJKillaQueen Wrote: ----------------------------------------------- > When you say the new tution fees are progressive, > how are they progressive? The new proposals will mean that the number of graduates on low incomes having their repayments go up over the years will be massively reduced. I.e. the better off will end up paying more. Sorry door just gone... PS: cheeky mare!

I wouldn't have received a grant anyway. I was earning far too much at one of the "Magic Circle" firms of City Solicitors LOL!
