North Cross Road sub station - art installation

Who is doing these 'mock ups'? I don't know why but I'm finding them quite insulting because there are so many creative and qualified people in ED but these seem to be done by someone who is (in my opinion) definitely not. These printed flower ones presumably cost more and (again in my opinion) I think they're extremely tacky. I can't attend so would it be possible to give my vote here please? If so my vote is definitely to leave the lovely wall exactly as it is. Thank you -
Maybe there are companies that hire out CCTV for temporary problems such as these? Might be worth a look if your budget is tight. I hope you get it sorted soon - what an utter scum bag.

Katie, I went on a detour on the way home to confirm my liking of the wall as is, I even touched it :-$. It has quite a few nails in it where the stall holders must hang their pictures for sale. Mr Barber, do you have an details of the graffiti over the last say 5 years that has been done on the wall and the cost of cleaning it off? What do edf energy think, I'm quite suprised they haven't seized this opportunity to promote themselves by sponsoring some kind of locall environmental 'art piece/installation'. Unfortunately I can't make the meeting but I hope a great and cheap idea is born (which in my personal view is to leave it as is) whatever that may be. -
Oh Iain, I don't have kids so I can't offer any words of wisdom but I can send you a virtual hug. Hope all is well very soon and you're not useless because you're looking after Elsabels best interests by making sure she and anna get looked after. x

Fair enough and I do think some graffiti artists are extremely talented although I'm not a fan of Banksy. Although that is irrelevant because I doubt he'll be popping up in ED anytime soon. Edited to replace pooping with popping! -

I personally do not like graffiti - even the really beautifully designed and painted kind and I think it would look very out of place in this location. Whatever goes there would definitely have to be easily removable because I still think the wall is a lovely wall just as it is. -
It might be a coincidence but at around the same time my boyfriend was in Peckham at his parents last night and they had their road blocked off by loads of plain clothes police with guns and dogs who entered a property in what seemed to be a very planned opereation. Maybe they were connected and timed to happen at the same time? Or just completely separate.

Yey someone else who likes the wall! -
> Fair enough, but bear in mind how much it costs to > buy a home in an averagely priced area of London, > e.g. Dulwich. On a salary of 50k a year (a > realistic salary for an IT worker or back-office > clerk), you'd only be able to buy a one bed flat. Erm I don't agree with that one. If you're not wasteful with your money then you can save for a good deposit for 2 or 3 years and get a 2 bed property. My boyfriend and my combined salaries are only a bit over 50k but we saved hard and last year bought a 2 bed garden flat in the area - it is a 'doer uper' and 7 months later it's still a bit of a state but it's a step on the ladder. > Bonuses are just a way for companies to alter the > amount they pay people, according to performance. > Even if you have left-leaning views and believe > that high earners should contribute even more... > that's all well and good, but I'm not comfortable > with the singling out of a particular industry. > Especially when it's politically motivated. I'm not against bonuses but I think they have got out of control in the last decade or so.

> And actually, the > majority of city workers earn a fairly normal > salary - most of them are not wealthy. It depends what you class as "normal". The bbc says this (dec 08): "Full-time workers in London earn an average of ?46,000, compared to the UK average of ?31,300, the GMB found. The biggest earners were in the City of London with an average pay of ?82,000 per annum." That's approaching double the rest of london but I suppose it depends on what you class as wealthy and an average figure does not show much really. To me someone on more than around 50k is wealthy but I understand that others may have a much higher figure in mind. I don't think the big bonuses are fair but I probably wouldn't say that if I worked for the banking sector.

I don't think you need 10 people - it would probably be too much of a commitment to agree to go to 9 plus your own dinner party and nearly impossible to find 10 dates everyone can commit to. 4 seems to work for the show. Did you search on here for the thread last year, maybe the person who suggested it then would be keen to join in. Good luck.

I don't think the cleaner, greener, safer allocation of money is meant for things like potholes etc but I may be wrong. I think it's a great scheme in general. I think James Barber is trying his hardest to get issues raised on this forum resolved. For the record I don't know who I'm going to vote for yet. southwark cleaner green safer link -

How about approaching a local(ish) college or university students and set them a competition brief with a prize of say ?200 and the winning concept can spend up to ?300 on material and installation etc. I'm still concerned as to who "designed" it because I'm not convinced it was an artist or designer. -

I actually really like that wall as it is and I think sometimes (although maybe i dreamt this) stall holders lean their pictures etc on it and it looks lovely. I have an alternative suggestion - put a series of loops/clips etc on the bricks that jut out and have a lost and found in east dulwich wall so when someone finds say a glove or other cheapish item in ED they can attach it to the wall so the owner can potentially find it. I know it's a bit silly but it would serve some kind of purpose and look cool (although i do realise i may be the only person to think it would look good). Who did design it then? -

So this is what they are proposing (obviously neater than my version)? Did the artist approach the cleaner green safer team or was it put out to tender so to speak? Also this is slightly off topic, who funds the cleaner, safer team? I'm just curious and as I said above I think schemes like this are good for the community etc. just not convinced by this one. -
Have you been yet? I want to know what you went/are going as!

Did a member of the cleaner, safer team come up with the design or was it an artist? Sorry I know I should go to the meeting rather than give my view here but I'm going to anyway. ?2800 (the most expensive version) +delivery and installation + photographs/artwork for "vinyl square prints" seems very steep to me. I know it wouldn't look quite as good but for a lot less money you can get that peel off vinyl stuff that should stick to the brick. Sorry if my post was a bit negative and on the whole I'm all for schemes like this, just not for so much money. I would ask what the concept is for each design but I really should go to the meeting and ask that.
