  3. OK, if you want some serious advice I'll get mlteenie to get in touch with you. Resident saddle sniffer.
  4. Out of the four makes you mention above - Kona is top notch.
  5. make sure you keep a copy of the email.
  6. cobbles came before tarmac so yes, most big thoroughfares would have been cobbled, smaller routes would be left as dirt tracks. Then tarmac was invented and cobbled roads were covered.

    Petty Annoyances

I'll hold my hands up and admit to having become a bit of a pedant in my old age but I prefer to see any comments as helping the afflicted person rather than having a go. I'm sure I do it in the nicest possible way. And, I hasten to add, I'm sure I'm not beyond grammatical errors myself. Vocabulary is shrinking - you just have to read books written in the 18th century to realise how eloquent some people were in day to day exchanges. Not that I am against language evolving just that it seems a shame to lose.
  8. oh, I don't know, a few years ago in the Dog's previous carnation I used to spend several hours of an afternoon happily oblivious to my offspring while they ran riot in the back garden. (ducks and waits for barrage of abuse hahahahaha)
  9. It depends, I have a self-cert mortgage as a self-employed person. When I fixed the rate 2 years ago it was at 5.09%, I'm now being offered 6.99% which is increasing my monthly outgoings by nearly ?100. There are around half as many lenders offering self-cert mortgages now than a year or so ago. Even though I am in the fortunate position of having a mortgage of only around 20% of the value of the property it still means the monthly payments go up substantially. That is not me 'overstretching' myself, but the economics of the situation going against me.

    it does
  11. I don't think the council collect paper and glass from properties that don't have a wheelie bin and if that is the case, the DKH estate and the estate on Denmark hill will need the recycling point.
  12. I would feel pissed off if my kids were very good at a subject but were held back because others in the class couldn't keep up. Likewise if they were rubbish at something I wouldn't want them in a class full of people sniggering because they were behind everyone else. In that sense I think a bit of streaming is a good thing - then everyone gets taught and learns at the level and speed of their abilities. Some people are great at languages and crap at maths and vice versa, or some people are gifted artists but rubbish academically. It can't be a case of a homogenised education system.

  14. In re the co-ed debate. I had heard that girls do better in single sex schools for the reasons stated by moos above, but that boys actually do better in co-ed as they have to impress and compete with the girls.

Chuff - you are right about the 'baby on board' signs. They were developed exactly for that purpose: to alert emergency services in the event of an accident to head for the car containing babies and young children first.

incorrect use of apostrophes hahahahahahahahahahahahaha, sorry.
  18. how were you watching it? I couldn't find it on any channel. Or were you listening on radio?
  19. oh well, okay then. Hands up - I'm wrong it seems. AAAArgh
  20. I think the driver of the BMW whose front wing was mangled would dispute there was no damage. I don't want to harp on about this but I do think you are wrong John. Damage to anything other than damage to that vehicle which caused the accident, i.e. any one of the cars involved (or mechanically propelled vehicle as the act so succintly puts it). If there is no damage to either car and the drivers agree to waive it then yes, it is okay not to report it, but in this case there is damage. You may not want the police involved but as someone above said, it is an offence not to report an accident that involves damage.
  21. Yes, but the child might have been autistic or had some other problem that is not a reflection on anyone's parenting skills or an indication of something up in the family. Again, that is someone witnessing something and making judgements or assumptions without having the full facts. I think that was the point that moos was making and I was agreeing with. It's not a squabble, I see it as people having opinions and voicing them. Personally I disagree with the assertion above that it is only the parents who teach children respect. Things like that are learned by being in social situations: peer group and being treated with respect by other adults than the parents.
  22. No, it's fairly clear in the link that if there is damage or injury it is the drivers responsibility to report the accident, i.e. to the police. Why are you using something that happened to you over 20 years ago as an example of what is okay now? And well done you for not having had an accident since then!
  23. ooh, gosh. How do we know it was an au pair? Did she throw up her hands and say 'help, I'm only an au pair'. Maybe she was a nanny. Maybe she was a family friend - just because she had an accent instantly to assume she's an au pair is a little presumptious. I'm with moos on this one.
  24. "Must be new requirement because in the 80's I remember telling the Police I'd deal with an an accident myself." road traffic act 20 years ago (1988)
  25. Pretty sure it's a legal requirement to inform the police of any sort of prang, whether or not fault is admitted. It is necessary for the insurance companies etc.
