I agree to an extent, there are clearly some tenants who clearly don't require those rooms while large families are living in temporary accommodation who then have to bid for council flats. The problems I find with this is that isn't enough housing stock to move single tenants into one bedroom flats and I don't think they'll be enough time for most of them to find appropriate accommodation. The private sector is even harder to acquire rented accommodation with rent costs and the lack of acceptance of housing benefit renters. Most if not all can't put down a deposit on a household. In the long term, the HB reforms could work, but like the previous reforms which saw a per annum cap on benefit, this could lead to poorer residents leaving for other parts of the country where rent is cheaper.

The ELL was designed not to take passengers to a central London terminus, but to give passengers easier access to connections, particularly to the tube network and at Clapham Junction where there's a multitude of national rail services to Southern England as well as Victoria and Waterloo. The interchange at Canada Water is easier than walking from the end of platform 16 to the tube platforms at London Bridge which can take 5/7 mins. As I already use the Overground, if I'm travelling to a Zone 1 tube station, except for London Bridge, Waterloo East or Charing Cross, I use the Overground and tube, it also works out cheaper for me using Oyster PAYG.
  3. Social housing residents are also facing changes as more housing and council tax benefit reform starts in April 2013, Southwark are proposing a 15% cut to housing benefit per bedroom to working age residents who have more bedrooms than they require. For example, a single person with two bedrooms would see 15% off their housing benefit, but if they move into a one bedroom, they'll continue to receive full housing benefit. A neighbour of mine has already started looking on Southwark Homesearch as they have a three bedroom (kids have grown up and left home) to downgrade to a one bedroom in preparation.

Considering your behaviour in The Lounge, in particular in the Euro 2012 thread, you have a lot to answer. The fact is you've been rumbled and resorting to troll tactics to get your point across. *awaits post about my low self esteem*

I read that as "If you don't agree with my viewpoint, please don't post as I'll rant and rave at you back" There are two viewpoints to the SLL changes and both should be debated sensibly. If you read the Rail Forums thread, which our friend is now posting as Another-Level, there's a rumour that from 2019, the SLL may return as a shuttle service between Battersea Park and London Bridge, which would bring back the London Bridge trains from Peckham Rye back up to 6 per hour

The trains that are going to be used are the 4 carriage trains currently used on the ELL, which you'll see the current driver training services are in use already. They also have selective door opening if Clapham High Street and Wandsworth Road haven't had their platforms extended in time for the opening. I didn't make the point about using Whitechapel as an alternative to travel to Victoria which of course isn't viable if you're travelling from DH or PR. It'll either be a longer wait for a Southeastern train or change at Clapham Junction. The Whitechapel option is only really an option if you're travelling to East London or into the Tower Hill/Aldgate areas of the city. Incidentally there will be what is known as a 'parliamentary service' to Battersea Park, it's a way of not going through the bureaucracy of closing a rail line, so expect one train a day going there on weekdays instead of Clapham Junction.

I'd love to, but when you deal with aggressive behaviour from a man who's more than capable of debating in a mature manner except when it comes to transport issues. It's classic trolling behaviour to wind up other users (as seen with me and edcam) and bring them down to their level which then devalues the discussion. The facts are with the SLL, from December the SLL closes. Even after 2019 when LB's refurb is complete, London Bridge won't have the platform capacity and as the SLL is the least used of Southern's metro services, it won't return if the DfT can use those paths (slots for train services) for more profitable services from outer London or Surrey/Sussex. PR and DH will benefit from additional Thameslink services from 2019 and there's also the possibility that TfL will take over Southeastern's metro services, which the Dartford to Victoria train comes under. If TfL take it over and put it under London Overground's banner, there is a strong possibility that late evening and Sunday services will start which will fill the void of the Inner SLL's closure. In an ideal world, the SLL and ELL would run side by side, yet that isn't the case and SRUG should use their efforts to encourage passengers to change their journey patterns which may be to their advantage. Peckham, Denmark Hill/Camberwell and ED are not in some backwater, there are public transport alternatives which don't necessarily mean using rail.

The routing guide clearly states that the season ticket is valid via Streatham Hill, although the concern from some is that Southern may request that loophole is changed come December. Or you could just change at Clapham Junction with your zone 1-2 travelcard, but that seems like too much hard work.....

  17. Oh dear, Undisputedtruth is trolling again. It's no wonder I don't visit the transport threads on here that often when this supposed know it all and regular passenger of the SLL (and possibly a member of Southwark Rail Users Group) can't see what's in front of him and does the classic keyboard warrior actions of bringing down people who don't agree with his viewpoint. If you search his account, his posts include various put downs to posters who don't see his POV on transport issues. May I suggest people visit the Railforumsuk thread where a sensible discussion of this topic by transport insiders has been discussed without the need for being agressive. Even the legendary EDF transport user can add his two pennies worth if he signs up. http://railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=69548

Yet > you still don't get it, Bic Basher. Oh dear, once again you're spinning a negative agenda to a passenger who's looking forward to improved services on the line. Classic trolling. We'll see in December if passengers really care about getting the least used part of the Southern network re-instated or do what normal people do and get on using with the services we already have which has been the case where Overground services have replaced Southern in Forest Hill and Honor Oak Park. Incidentally Mr Undisputed train anorak, your previous argument about travel costs for the outer SLL is complete crap, season ticket holders from Battersea Park will be able to use their current season tickets at no additional cost.

They'll be two trains per hour from Peckham Rye and Denmark Hill to Victoria on weekdays and Saturday except evenings. The ELL will replace the SLL if you're going to Clapham High Street or Wandsworth Road. Battersea Park (and Victoria) will require a change at Clapham Junction.
  21. I think one of the reasons why Nunhead is cheaper is due to it's lack of public transport links. The rail station has an infrequent service into London, with 2 trains per hour to Victoria (except evenings and Sundays) or 2 trains per hour to Kentish Town (Blackfriars evenings and Sundays). Otherwise it's the 78 which connects to Peckham or the P12 to Surrey Quays. I suspect those who don't rely on Nunhead station use the buses to Peckham Rye to connect to other rail services. New Cross Gate and Brockley stations are in walking distance of parts of Nunhead which are on the Overground. To travel to ED, you're better off walking from the end of Nunhead Lane down East Dulwich Road to Goose Green than waiting for two buses.
  22. The options which don't include the tube tend to be cheaper. Zone 1 comes at a premium. You can shave a bit of time off the FH to CJ section by getting the first Overground train to Crystal Palace and walking over to the Southern platforms, although it is a bit of a walk up the huge stairwell.
  23. I haven't used Canada Water since the games started, however the best thing to do is to get on the front carriage and go up the escalator to the ticket hall and then back down to the Jubilee platforms. There is a direct escalator from the Overground platform to the Jubilee, but I think that's closed for the duration of the games as it can get overcrowded on a normal day. Alternatives are to change at Whitechapel for the District/H&C and get off at West Ham if you have tickets to the Olympic Park events or you could do what I did on Saturday and stay on the Overground and change at Canonbury for Stratford.

Incidentally Royal Victoria station is much closer to the cable car station than Custom House.
