Youths selling overpriced dishcloths door-to-door

Hey they're baaaaaaaack.

9:00PM seems to be the time they like to knock on the door.

He was intimidating and I needed to repeat 'no, no, no' and close the door on him. He was trying to say nice things but his actions amounted to harassment. If everybody closed the door on these guys and said 'no' then they wouldn't come round - but it can be really hard to do. I used to do cold calling door to door collecting for a charity so I know all the tricks, but these guys aren't doing tricky sales techniques, they're going right to intimidation.

Anybody else have 'em round this evening?

I had nice young woman at about 5pm with the usual script but this time the purpose was to save the "youth centre". I told her I don't buy off them any more as I'm not sure it's genuine. She said lots of people are saying that now and went away without arguing

I've just spotted this for the first time since my post.

I would like to apologise without reservation to StrangeMartin for a post that was personally offensive and generally obnoxious.

Strangemartin I hope you're able to accept.

I've just exchanged private messages with HonaloochieB and happily accepted his apology. All friends again!

Hope everyone gets a nice warm glow from this, in time for the weekend.

They came round last night at 9pm at the bottom of Barry Road, I said no politley. I felt harsh as I'm all for young poeple helping out charities but I wouldnt trust anyone as far as I could throw them on door to door tactics, especially in london!

I felt as a guy he wasn't going to hassle me but I was polite nonetheless, then felt harsh and donated ?5 online to a homeless charity. They get your guilt either way!

@ayresc

I think your idea of giving to an on line charity is great! Imagine if every time someone obnoxious knocked on your door you gave money to worthy-legit-registered-with-the-charity-commission cause? With all the gosh darned Jehovah's witnesses and people trying to get us to switch my power company knocking on our doors around here we could raise money for a brand new children's hospital in East Dulwich or something equally as worthwhile no doubt. Next time the kids with the dishcloths come round I'll give a donation to a nice appropriate youth charity who I'm sure will put the donation to good use.

ooh - that reminds me - money saving expert site has a print-out-yourself thing to put on your door that is 'no cold callers' - the gas and electric companies have signed up to it. wont be any help with dishcloth sellers. but hopefully a bit relevant.

Just close the door - it's simple. These guys know they are preying on your good manners to not tell then F* off. Besides most genuine charities just ask for donations or have fund raising events. They don't knock on your door trying to sell you something - and if they do, they'll have ID cards and other stuff to show they are a genuine representative of that charity. Common sense guys - it's a scam - just close your door, and if they get abusive or damage your property, call the police.

I had one around the other day. He said they were raising money for something to do with kids, and I said I already do enough for kids, being a teacher. He didn't argue with that one, just said goodbye. Have I gotten off lightly? :D
