The grim details here:

http://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/male-cyclist-in-his-60s-dies-in-crash-with-lorry-at-camberwell-road-8947110.html

That is a very nasty junction indeed and the road surface is awful. As you say, best avoided - by using Portland street 400 yards east of there.

Thank you all again for your messages of condolence and support.

As requested, here are the arrangements for the services for my son, Roger de Klerk.

Thursday 28 November 1.45 p.m. funeral service at St Bartholomews Church, Sydenham.

3.15 p.m. Cremation service at Honor Oak Crematorium, Brenchley Gardens.

Thereafter gathering at a nearby venue (pub) to be arranged and notified.

If any reporters are reading this, please could I ask them to respect the family's wishes and to stay away?

As requested, here are the finalised details for my son Roger's funeral on 28 November:

1.45 p.m. Funeral Service, St Bartholomews Church, Westwood Hill, Sydenham.

3.15 p.m. Cremation Service, Honor Oak Crematorium, Brenchley Gardens.

3.45 onwards The Dolphin (pub) 121 Sydenham Road, Sydenham.

Everyone is welcome, but I request that the media leave us in peace.

Thank you all so much for your support.

Yes, thank you LadyD.

TG, is this the sort of thing you had in mind? I love it! http://www.highsnobiety.com/2014/01/03/skycycle-aims-to-transform-london-into-cycling-utopia/

"The footage comes amid growing concerns over cyclist safety in London. 14 cyclist died in the capital in 2013, and in November, the Metropolitan Police began deploying officers at 166 key junctions to stop people breaking road traffic laws in an attempt to make roads safer"

No they mainly pulled cyclists for cycling on pavements and going through red lights. Very few law breaking motorists were pulled.

Awful footage though. I've had many similar altercations but haven't had any resulting in a punch up. Had a bus drive right accross the junction about an inch away from me, where Rye Lane cycle contraflow bit is, because I had stopped past the red cycle stop light. I've got it on my helmet-cam so I'm going to send it to Arriva and hope the arsehole loses his job.

Not sure that's quite right Lady Deliah, many more drivers were given penalty notices than cyclists (e.g. see http://road.cc/content/news/106434-metropolitan-police-says-operation-safeway-has-changed-road-users-behaviour) but there were certainly lots of anecdotal reports of cyclists being pulled over when doing nothing wrong, including one where a rookie police officer pulled over an off duty superior to tell him off for something stupid. I wish I could find that link, it was pretty funny.

After the deaths, a senior police officer told police to target cyclists, not motorists:

http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/public/cyclesafety/article3933789.ece

This was criticised a week or so ago by the Transport minister and has since been pulled. But yes, they were targeting cyclists far more than motorists when they did the traffic offences swoop.

I saw both motorists and cyclists being pulled over. There are certainly fewer moped riders in the ASLs now which is where I saw them paying most attention. Aside from the first day where they were pulling over those not in high vis or helmets, any other cyclist that I saw being collared deserved it (jumped lights or no lights)

I did see that quote at the time but I believe it was retracted shortly afterwards.

It was, I think the met police said that a directive from higher up about a quota for all tickets (not just for cyclists, for motorists as well) had been misinterpreted by someone down the chain as being just for cyclists and they sent out a memo to that effect.

I notice that the Hyde Park Corner thingy isn't on the list...BAH!

i agree with you Applespider, Vauxhall is an absolute nightmare. It was given token "improvements" a few years ago but still massively inadequate especially at rush hour.

Apologies for posting this on here, but I can't find the thread which was discussing it.

Does anybody know what is happening about the secure cycle hangers (?) which were being considered for various local roads? I applied for one in Ulverscroft Road but haven't heard anything since.

I'm keen to get a bike but have nowhere suitable to store one, and I'd definitely start cycling if I had somewhere safe to keep the bike.

If someone could post the link to the original thread that would be useful, then I can post on there instead of here.

From 17th March, loads of cycling kit in Lidl:

http://www.lidl.co.uk/cps/rde/SID-7133229B-F28B08C4/www_lidl_uk/hs.xsl/our-offers-2491.htm?id=240

I find most their stuff well made and a good price. The lights are a bit big and I'm not sure about their paniers, but I like their front box thing and their cycling clothes.

    • That is also a Young's pub, like The Cherry Tree. However fantastic the menu looks, you might want to ask exactly who will cook the food on the day, and how. Also, if  there is Christmas pudding on the menu, you might want to ask how that will be cooked, and whether it will look and/or taste anything like the Christmas puddings you have had in the past.
    • This reminds me of a situation a few years ago when a mate's Dad was coming down and fancied Franklin's for Christmas Day. He'd been there once, in September, and loved it. Obviously, they're far too tuned in to do it, so having looked around, £100 per head was pretty standard for fairly average pubs around here. That is ridiculous. I'd go with Penguin's idea; one of the best Christmas Day lunches I've ever had was at the Lahore Kebab House in Whitechapel. And it was BYO. After a couple of Guinness outside Franklin's, we decided £100 for four people was the absolute maximum, but it had to be done in the style of Franklin's and sourced within walking distance of The Gowlett. All the supermarkets knock themselves out on veg as a loss leader - particularly anything festive - and the Afghani lads on Rye Lane are brilliant for more esoteric stuff and spices, so it really doesn't need to be pricey. Here's what we came up with. It was considerably less than £100 for four. Bread & Butter (Lidl & Lurpak on offer at Iceland) Mersea Oysters (Sopers) Parsnip & Potato Soup ( I think they were both less than 20 pence a kilo at Morrisons) Smoked mackerel, Jerseys, watercress & radish (Sopers) Rolled turkey breast joint (£7.95 from Iceland) Roast Duck (two for £12 at Lidl) Mash  Carrots, star anise, butter emulsion. Stir-fried Brussels, bacon, chestnuts and Worcestershire sauce.(Lidl) Clementine and limoncello granita (all from Lidl) Stollen (Lidl) Stichelton, Cornish Cruncher, Stinking Bishop. (Marks & Sparks) There was a couple of lessons to learn: Don't freeze mash. It breaks down the cellular structure and ends up more like a French pomme purée. I renamed it 'Pomme Mikael Silvestre' after my favourite French centre-half cum left back and got away with it, but if you're not amongst football fans you may not be so lucky. Tasted great, looked like shit. Don't take the clementine granita out of the freezer too early, particularly if you've overdone it on the limoncello. It melts quickly and someone will suggest snorting it. The sugar really sticks your nostrils together on Boxing Day. Speaking of 'lost' Christmases past, John Lewis have hijacked Alison Limerick's 'Where Love Lives' for their new advert. Bastards. But not a bad ad.   Beansprout, I have a massive steel pot I bought from a Nigerian place on Choumert Road many years ago. It could do with a work out. I'm quite prepared to make a huge, spicy parsnip soup for anyone who fancies it and a few carols.
    • Nothing to do with the topic of this thread, but I have to say, I think it is quite untrue that people don't make human contact in cities. Just locally, there are street parties, road WhatsApp groups, one street I know near here hires a coach and everyone in the street goes to the seaside every year! There are lots of neighbourhood groups on Facebook, where people look out for each other and help each other. In my experience people chat to strangers on public transport, in shops, waiting in queues etc. To the best of my knowledge the forum does not need donations to keep it going. It contains paid ads, which hopefully helps Joe,  the very excellent admin,  to keep it up and running. And as for a house being broken into, that could happen anywhere. I knew a village in Devon where a whole row of houses was burgled one night in the eighties. Sorry to continue the off topic conversation when the poor OP was just trying to find out who was open for lunch on Christmas Day!
    • We went to Chern Thai for lunch on Saturday, as we have done quite often, and they were closed, with no sign of life. The sign in the window still says Saturday 12-3, and there was no indication that they would be closed. Can anybody shed any light? We went to Chilli and Garlic on Zenoria Street instead. Their falafel salad bowl is amazing (and amazing value!) but we had been looking forward to a Pad Thai and a pint of Singha! ETA: I am reviving this thread because it is/was  specifically about Chern Thai's opening times!
