Well we found loads of blackberries in Dulwich Wood, mulberries in Peckham Rye (they had been pretty well picked recently), elderberries everywhere and rowan berries near Dawson Heights. We did see sloes but only in private gardens I'm afraid!

Didn't make any jam this time but had a lovely summer fruit cake for our efforts! Will go collecting again soon.

Thanks everyone for the tips.

Hmm... even if the sloes are in private gardens, it may be worthwhile knocking on the doors and asking if you'd be able to pick them since lots of fruit in gardens does end up going to waste.

You could always offer them some sloe gin once you've made it in payment...

Picked just over a pound of wild cherry plums on P.Rye this morning which I shall make into jam supplemented by windfall damsons/plums (how do you tell the difference?) from a tree at the bottom of Warwick Park. The WP tree is extremely bountiful so lots of pickings for everyone.

There is also a hazel tree next to it. I've picked up a few that have blown down and they taste wonderful. Does anyone fancy coming with me and a stepladder and looking rather silly to harvest some more? Or have any ideas how to get them before the squirrels?

Edited to add: I was thwarted from picking some damsons from the trail that runs by the side of Hornimans - they are right up at the end by the pool. The gates were locked despite the notice saying they are open daily until 4pm. I shan't bother to go up again, so someone else may like to try.

Lakeland - I think they have a store in Bromley, but good online/telephone sales team and fast delivery too.

    • Thanks penguin  always wondered about that place and that’s way more info than I ever thought I would get  (used to live above a gun nut on friern road - he would tell me nothing)
    • There was a Saturday afternoon crowd of enthusiasts, and at other times the owner might have been off acquiring stock. He also repaired air guns, which he also sold. He stocked edged weapons, uniforms, including antique uniforms, air guns and ammo and starting pistols and shot. Some medals and other militaria. Quite a lot of ex service chit chat on a Saturday. I had an amateur interest, didn't deal a lot, in English pattern swords and other mainly 19th century militaria. And made some good purchases there. I'm afraid WWII and later events was the major focus of most of the regulars.
    • Did anyone actually venture in to that place? I recall it always being closed/very uninviting!
