What do you Want out of The Flying Pig Pub???

Recommended Posts

Yep - bermygirl is right - you either do it really well like Bodeans/HotBox/(insert BBQ joint of choice) or do something totally different. A burger is dull, predictable and just isn't a USP - Deliveroo now has 8 burger options within 5 mins of SE22. By all means stick it on the menu but put some more different stuff alongside it.

As it happens I quite like the Pig how it is. I like a drink at the bar there, good location, staff are always friendly, it shows sport when I need it to but not when I don't. All it really needs is to do one food thing well...as well as say, The Gowlett does pizzas...and it's a solid all rounder.

For constant Sky sports I'd go to a Weatherspoons...

Hello. I went to the Flying Pig the other day for the pulled pork and it wasn't on the menu any more. We had a burger which was fine, but not nearly as good as the food used to be. For me, if it's not a barbecue pub, it's just another pub. I like the big selection of beers, but the food was your distinctive thing, and now that's gone.

Great post, if not 'winging' it somewhat

Or....anything but 'Burgers' and more farkin Burgers

Why not franchise your kitchen out to some Bbq supremo hipster kid who only has a street food stall and is just waiting for a concession somewhere that fits with the Bbq ethos. As seen at the Nuns head (burger bear) and when Scott did it pre Meat Liqour at the Rye.it works.

And Korean Fried Chicken. Perhaps become the best chicken joint in SE22.

This is an excellent idea. Perhaps a few months for each concession.

Yes that would be great, but how likely is that in reality?

You need the right gear - i.e. smokers. Do they actually have these in the flying pig kitchen? I was under the impression they had a Josper (charcoal oven) which is rather a different beast.

I can't think of anything the Flying Pig does better than other local options, meaning I have little reason to go, but the food is certainly worse ? and not good for US barbecue in its own right quite aside from local comparisons. If this type of food was really done well then it would certainly be a draw for me.

Beer selection?

it certainly was the last time I went in. Nowhere else came close.

They did have a fast Eddy cabinet smoker there. Its by far the easiest one to use on the market.

Just needs someone to have the will and the support of the owners

And there maybe lies the rub

Wonder if they still have it? They seemed to abandon the bbq concept before it ever really got going, and the offering had been reduced to ribs and pulled pork..

Not any burgers, but dirty burgers, as opposed to clean ones? yes, boring.

    • Hi there,  Can anyone recommend a local (East Dulwich, Peckham) surveyors that also undertake Help to Buy valuations?  All my Google searches are throwing out national firms when popular advice is to appoint someone local who really understands the area you live in.  Any advice or recommendations would be welcome.  Thank you.
    • Don't forget South end of Underhill Road.  Good sized houses with good sized gardens and short walk to Dulwich park, Dulwich Woods, Horniman and Peckham Rye.  Transport access in five different directions which is super useful and the little P13 gets you to Lordship Lane shops in no time. Easy parking.  IMO a little part of Dulwich underappreciated by some living right near East Dulwich shops but much liked by those that find their way to this quiet corner of Dulwich. Good luck to you
    • SO many different threads for Niko!    This one seems to have the most posts so here is another one... Niko is awesome, super-helpful, decent, easily available and the best plumber bar none. Thanks again Niko!
    • Eh, what are you on about Mal? I thought we were talking about penalties for road users. I am not au fait with traffic penalties in Rwanda, are you? Mind you, with the amount of overseas travel you have flagged up as having done over the years perhaps you do? Either way, seems a bit off piste, even for you.
