>>Jumping jacks and aeroplanes? Are they mega fireworks or something<<

Well....if you at the photograph at http://www.cyber-heritage.co.uk/museum/box6.jpg , there is a small jumping jack at top centre of the photo, the one looking a bit like a startled snake. They were (allegedly) dangerous because they jumped all over the place once set off. An aeroplane looked like a large banger with a strip of cardboard attached at right angles across its centre, so looked vaguely like a biplane. You stuck it on a wall and it "flew" off loudly and in a horizonal plane...

Learning to cope with "dangerous" fireworks was a good toughening-up exercise and an excellent preparation for life! Eho needs 8 fingers and 2 thumbs anyway?

Ottery Saint Mary was one of the scariest things I've ever been to, massive bonfire storeys high, and burning tar barrels rolling down narrow streets, I thought I was lucky to get out alive :))

there's usually a bonfire and fireworks display at Dulwich Cricket Club, on Burbage Road. they have BBQ, mulled wine, etc, and the setting is lovely. does anyone know if they're doing one this year, and if so, what date?

PS if anyone *doesn't* fancy a bonfire on November 5th, they can always come and hear me sing Upstairs @ the EDT on that night, instead. ;-)

Now that takes me back. I used to go to these every year when I was a kid back in the 60s.

No, DHOSA is the Dulwich Hamlet Old Scholars Association which used to meet in the Old Grammar School on the corner of Burbage and Gallery Road. I don't think they exist anymore. It was people who had been to Dulwich Hamlet Junior School in the Village. The Dulwich Sports Club is at the other end of Burbage.

    • It is not Labour Party members who elect Labour governments, as it certainly isn't Conservative Party members who elect Conservative ones. It is all those who are not party members who actually make up the sufficient numbers to elect governments.
    • Thanks for these responses. Yes, Cllr Browning & Cllr Hartley did a door-knocking exercise a couple of months ago. It was Maggie Browning who knocked and I told her that I'd had radio silence from Jon Hartley. She looked embarrassed but not surprised. I have spoken to him since, only after writting to Ellie Reeves, our MP about it his lack of response. He agreed to address the issue I asked about but I've not heard from him since. It's really not acceptable for an elected Councillor to consistently ignore his ward constituents. Since it's clearly not a one-off, I'm gonna pick this up formally. I'll let you know how I get on...
    • If memory serves, Labour under Corbyn got more electoral  votes than Labour under Starmer. So I'm not sure how you can call that being "unelectable"? Under a different and fairer electoral system Labour would have won. I see moves are afoot to bring in such a different, fairer system, presumably in the hopes of stopping Reform winning next time. BTW there was a mass exodus from Labour  by  the local (East Dulwich) Labour party members when Corbyn was kicked out by Starmer. It isn't just Islington who doesn't want to support  a right or centre right Labour party.
    • Is this the new shop next to Dulwich Tandoori? is it actually open and if so has anyone tried them.
