maybe the old cliche of builders wolf whistling at all the women walking past I suppose but in other news that's to be made hate crime in London so it won't be.

or maybe just because I personally couldn't live in a room of 8 and expect my employer to pay ?150 per night for a hotel (snoring and the rest urghhh) - so who's employer expects them to do so ?

backpackers - OK - I see them in St Christophers near London Bridge and they seem OK with it :)

The place in NCR was a complete dive. Filthy, not hygienic, desperately in need of maintenance.

How anyone could think people choose to live like that is beyond me - it is more likely that this is all some people can afford. It's also tricky renting privately - huge deposits etc. and supported accommodation is hard to find.

It is a step back to the coffin box dorms of the Victorian Era is we are ever going to seriously consider this as an approptiate type of accomodation for the low paid. This mentality has to stop. A short let hostel for travellers is what it says it is. It is not a substitute for housing longer term and nor should it ever be.

If you're 20 and travelling Europe (ha) on a shoestring, yes of course. Isn't it practically a rite of passage? Have you really never heard of backpacking or travelling??

Bloody weird thread, this...

Yes these kinds of dorm are completely normal for backpackers allover the world.

If it were used by workers that might actually be a step up, particularly for those who seem to be living in the back of some of those run down old white vans and lorries that are permanently parked up at the end of residential streets.

47 people in 5 rooms 9.4 people per room. is that legal.

Do HMO rules apply..

Space requirements for HMO

Bedroom (Table 1)

1 occupant 6.5m2

2 occupants 11m2

3 occupants 15m2

For each additional person there shall be a minimum additional 4.5m2 of floor area.

Bedroom/Living Room (Table 2)

1 occupant 10m2

2 occupants 15m2

3 occupants 19.5m2 4.4.4

Bedroom/Living Room/Kitchen (Table 3)

1 occupant 13m2

2 occupants 20.5m2

In order to fit 0.4 of a person into a room you would need to somehow cut them up. I think this is probably in contravention of EU regulation. Perhaps after we take back control, we'll have some common sense returned to British law.

In my (limited) experience, I think guys sleeping in white vans are often builders or labourers who have been working during the night (for shops, offices, stations, etc) and then catching a couple of hours sleep before they start their day jobs doing residential stuff...

I've done it many times when travelling, with no problems apart from other people snoring :))

The location doesn?t seem any stranger for tourists than the apparently popular Peckham Lodge (Best Western ?London Peckham?). As a hostel type, it?s similar to the ones in central areas like Kensington. As long as it?s cheaper and well marketed, no reason it can?t work.

Now that you can get more sterling for your euro, it?s a good moment to attract European visitors. Hope ED will get a local boost, and welcome an interesting mix of people passing through.

    • I am faintly amused by the cries of horror when the overtly political actions of Southwark Council Labour (their car hatred does after all form part of their manifesto) is countered by what might possibly be political action of others (although there is some evidence to support it being a groundswell of purely local and not party-affiliated activity). Who is behind Southwark Labour party one might ask - is it Militant Trotskyites? From where are they being funded? The Kremlin, Beijing?
    • Ha ha, some people really don't like an opinion that differs to theirs do they! Bravo One Dulwich - you're magnificently rattling the cages of people who don't want to hear a differing opinion and the fact they get so irate about it is the icing on the cake! Some spend so much emotional energy trying to convince themselves One Dulwich is some shadowy, agitator state-funded lobby group when all they are is a group of local residents giving a voice to the majority of residents impacted by the measures.
    • @Earl, Be assured, it is purely a local group. In fact it is a genteel group of Dulwich area residents, mostly ladies , who are a little  reluctant to publish their individual names as they do not wish to be targets for hostility from internet trolls. Local residents who attended the anti-LTN gatherings in Dulwich would have easily recognised the active members of the group. Should you have any queries about funding, it is quite easy to send them an email.
    • Hi  I have a spare old wheelbarrow that you could have for free. You’d need to come and collect it from Telegraph Hill, so drop me a message if you’re still looking and we can arrange a time best wishes carrie
