Aah - nice topic - one close to my heart. In my humble, researched opinion:



Gowlett: best-tasting if you like thin and crispy and a wait for freshly prepared gorgeousness


Actress: very close 2nd - love the potatoes/rosemary one against all previous suspicions


Firezza: nah


Dominoes: great when hangover is so much you cannot leave the house. It is what it is.


@ Alan Medic: Since when was a whole pizza (of any size) been too much?


*sighs at overly large pizza-loving tummy*

i've only had one gowlett pizza and it was average (from the sounds of things i guess i've been unlucky) had a couple of nice one's from il mirto, but i've found it helps to ask for them well done, as they can be a bit sloppy otherwise


the best pizzas in the area are my homemade ones;


Nothing flash- very thin base, tomato and herb layer, thin mozarella layer- top shelf of the oven for about 4 minutes nice n crisp- some parma ham, handful of rocket and a drizzle of chilli oil all added cold.

The best pizza I have had in the area was in Sydenham at this new restaurant, Re Masaniello where the old Criterion Ice Cream Parlour used to be. The pizzas are done there in front of you in the clay oven and they are very decent and reasonable priced. I always have the vegetarian one with artichokes, aubergines, broccoli raab, mushrooms, peppers.

I have also been told that Raffaele restaurant in the area is very good and makes pizzas and rustic bread, more reasonable priced than ED shops and bakeries. Also there are some good pizzerias up to Crystal Palace. Enjoy

Hmmmmm...


They ain't all that are they. All standard "generic pizza parts" assembled on site, then cooked in erm, an oven.


I mean really, how difficult is it to make a decent pizza base from scratch ?


However, it does take skill & desire, which The Gowlett at least have in spades.


Even a chain like Pizza Express knock out pretty perfect pizza all day long.


Duh, it's not rocket science, just use the right stuff across the board.


In general the Actress/Bishop chain do pretty well.



BUT their Pizzas suck.

Best I've had locally is from Pizza al Forno in Forest Hill - nice thin crust pizza, delivery is always very speedy and it's nice and hot when it arrives.


Firenza is nothing like as good (too salty), and don't get me started on Dominos. I'd rather not eat than have Dominos, far too greasy, makes me feel ill.

It says on the back of Franco Manca's menu/place mats why their pizzas are a bit chewy.


Can't remember exactly but apparently they are intended to be like that.


I agree the Gowlett's are crispier, but I had another one at Franco Manca on Saturday and it was absolutely delicious again :)


Though I found it a bit odd that they'd run out of pale ale, considering it's in bottles (so won't go off if they get a load in) and they have a relatively small range of drinks!

I must say I'm a fan of Gowlett Johnny. A man, flawed like the rest of us, who bangs to the beat of his own drum. He has the nervous spark of entrepreneurial energy that keeps him busy....Most recently an old converted double decker bus. With a full pizza oven in the back and seating with 30 odd covers. Love it.

Sourdough is why it's chewier. I really like Franco Manco but it's down to taste, most people prefer thin easy chew. I also like Pizza Eexpress. The actress would be my third favourite in the area.


ps I was also miffed about the lack of pale ale, that was the first Saturday they opened, so still without it!?

    • We have had a few cat flaps over the years but none have been electronic. They just have a small clip that you turn to lock or open.  Some come with a magnet and a matching magnet that the cat wears on its collar  This prevents other cats entering.  I've not used these as I don't like the idea of a cat wearing a collar. Cats do like to be out at night and you need to encourage yours to return after a late evening sortie. Calling,rustling treat wrappers worked for ours but he seems to have now got into the habit of coming back about 9pm. without this.        
    • Having had several cats over the past 40 years - mainly rescue, we have a tried and tested routine, Initially confined to one room with litter tray/food/water - we take it in turns to stay for a few minutes several times a day so they become familiar with our scent. They are gradually introduced to the rest of the house. We have a wire cat basket and we place cat in basket and take them outside, over a few days we place basket in different areas of the garden - grass area/gravel area, patio area etc - different flowers/plants. Some of the more nervous cats we walk around the garden on a lead. They get use to the scent of the garden. We have a cat flap in the back door so they have full access - If we need to keep cat in - just block off the cat flap so they cannot escape! We are now down to one elderly cat - who during the summer just laid on the garden chairs and came in for food, but as weather getting colder prefers to sit on a worktop in the kitchen looking out into the garden. So we are back to the cat litter as she is reluctant to go out in the rain/cold.  
    • With fibre you are paying for the speed, which is the number, yours is 300 so if you did a lot of gaming, for example, you would want the fastest possible.  If it's just office work or maybe streaming on Netflix you likely won't need as fast, but, if there are a lot of people in your house all doing their own thing on different devices, then faster speeds are better.  I don't rely on my Wi-Fi much other than when I am using my mobile.  I use Ethernet cables to connect up everything, I Have one cable running from my router, along the skirtings and through a hole I drilled in the wall to another room.  I have attached the plusnet speed guide which gives you an idea of how it works.
