A friend of mine was telling me they went to a Xmas dinner do with someones veggie family and a VERY VERY heated debate ensued over the topic of.....desert island vegetables, (along the lines of "desert island discs").

So, without further ado...

WHAT ARE YOUR 5 DESERT ISLAND VEGETABLES?

Mine are:

1. Onions

2. Potatoes

3. Spinach

4. Mushrooms

5. Tomatoes*

* Ok - I know that technically they are fruit, rather than vegetables, but I'm not gonna put them in a fruit salad.

Can we add the bit where - when the waves crash to the shore and you have to rush and save just ONE FAVOURITE VEGETABLE what would it be?

My EIGHT Vegetables

Potatoes

Swede

Marrow

Corncobs

Parsnips

Carrots

Turnips

Peas

And I would save the Marrow.

You daft lot. HNY.

CHEEKY! That's 6! You can only save one of your five. As for picking 8 Peckham Rose - no! (Now you see why there was such a heated debate at the Xmas table mentioned in my original post). ;-)

Also, I am intrigued by everyone's postings...mine are all about practicality/versatility, but I am getting the vibe that the rest of you are going for favourites - although I am definitely not getting the whole swede/turnip fetish.

You could argue that strawberries are actually a vegetable as the fleshy bit that we eat is a type of stem. Technically their ?fruit? are the little black dots on the outside.

Aaah, the old fruit/vegetable argument.

Had a big barney about this in the office once.

After some research it boiled down to vegetable being pretty much any part or all of any plant. Tuber, leaf, fruit, seed, no matter.

But a fruit is a matured vegetable ovary containing seeds.

So all fruits are vegetables (including your tomato), but obviously not vice versa. I think a strawberry fits onto the fruit definition, but can't guarantee as a botanist I ain't.

Traditionally a vegetable is a savoury thing in cookery, so I guess from whence the debate arises tomatolly.

Can't remember where mushrooms fit into all of this.

Oh yah boo sucks you rotten rule makers and breakers.

"although I am definitely not getting the whole swede/turnip fetish"

I make soup. On me desert island I'd make soup dammit and swedes and turnips and parsnips make great soup.

Talking of desert islands, what eight deserts would you take?

Blueberry cheesecake

Strawberry cheesecake

Lemon cheesecake

(see the pattern here?)

Sachertorte

Profiteroles

Chocolare mousse

Chocolate eclairs

Chocolate fondue

Tarte au chocolat

Crepes with Curacao and chocolate sauce...

I too have a pattern... :))

I'd save the onions. I'd like to get to know them better.

    • Unfortunately Nissan was a disaster of a company when it created your car and still is, and most recently created another combined disaster alliance with Renault. Be aware, the trade value on your car is really low as no one wants to do the work & it's often only when it reaches near scrap value that someone (else) is willing to invest (their money) to try and fix. So if you're willing to front the money and fix your car that (you know) then that is most likely your best option (also understanding that it is outrageous that you should have to replace a CVT gearbox after 50K). If that isn't appealing consider a new Skoda Fabia 1.0 (Auto) on finance if you can't afford cash, it will last 20yrs.... (and avoid cars from the Stellantis group)
    • If you are referring to me, I was using my mobile. Just quoting the post I was replying to would have made no sense without showing my original post as well. I wouldn't have been able to do that on a "real PC" either, assuming I carried one around with me everywhere. It's nothing to do with what I'm using, it's the way the forum is set up to quote posts. I did insert a screenshot showing the keyboard by mistake.
    • You have to book for the Sunday roasts in advance. I have bad memories of once going for a circular  walk around Downe and then trying to eat. The Queens Head staff (and customers)  looked at us as if we were mad for attempting to get a meal without booking. The other pub in the village  reeked of bleach.  We had to  drive around in search of a meal, and ended up at some large pub whose name and location  I have thankfully forgotten. All I remember is the food, which was truly awful.
