And yet Sue and others consistently are guilty of this, and no one ever pulls them up on it. I have previously been politely asked to reign it in by the administrator, mostly due to other people goading me quite openly, and I have done so. I was pushed so far the last time I walked away from the forum. More recently (since Loutwo) I?ve behaved impeccably on the forum, and I do my best (not always successfully) to avoid the usual candidates attempts to get me banned.

I liked it, it is not cheap, but it is supposed to be a treat not an everyday shopping spree! They have carefully laid out the shop, sugar free, nut free, clearly marked etc etc and are listening to customer requests and feedback.

The staff are helpful and welcoming.

This sounds really good.

Although not a fan of sweets as such I do however have a MAJOR weakness for liquorice and presently have to trek to Borough market to get decent salt liquorice (its easier for me to get to than Ikea before anyone suggests there)

someone mentioned earier that this shop sells salt liquorice so I will definitely be there on my next day off.

I would say there 20 different jars of liquorice for sale by weight and presumably somewhere else in the store (I didn?t look) will be the manufactured liquorice products (pipes, wheels, stick).

I'm fascinated by the way that this wider national franchise brand must have been inspired in part by the success of our own local wonderful, witty and sadly missed Hope & Greenwood. So what started here as a single little shop, fuelled by passion, now 'returns' to us transformed in a slicker, corporate form. I must admit Twinkies were part of my partner's American childhood rather than mine but a sugar rush is still a sugar rush.

I think it's a different proposition. H&G had quite a lot of original recipe stuff... fudge, marshmallows, chocolate truffles, and ice creams. This new shop is more about buying in stuff from wholesale and presenting it in a retro style (which is fine... I still love sherbet lemons and wine gums, etc, it's just a bit of a different model).

I don't think it closed because not making money. I think the very creative owners moved in a different direction, wrote sweet making books, had a television series and marketed their sweets in top stores. I seem to recall they were actors and I hope they are still spreading joy in whatever ventures they are up to now.

My recollection (I think they posted on the forum if anyone can locate it) was that the rent was put up massively and they decided that it didn't make sense to stay in those premises. They had a shop in Covent Garden and a concession in Harrods and sold into some supermarkets, so it wasn't a case of going bust or anything, just a decision about the viability of that particular store post the rent hike.

You're both semi-correct. They had bigger plans (shops in central London and Tokyo, distribution to department stores and supermarkets) and the original shop was no longer a priority... and a hike in rent ultimately made the decision a no-brainer.

Unfortunately they went into administration shortly afterwards. Someone else owns the brand name now.
