Thirty five pounds is a lot of money to some people.

Absolutely agree, and don't pay for the service by all means. But then don't use your neighbour's bin who has paid without asking or offering a contribution! Most people have kept their bins and subscribed where we are, but I know of a couple who are sharing by agreement. If someone was in difficulties, I'm sure the OP would be happy to come to an arrangement if asked. People just need to show a bit of basic manners.

I would not be surprised if Blue and Green bins were next.

Charged by weight

I think you're safe there, unless they change the law. Councils have a statutory duty and legal obligation to remove residential waste including recycling without separate charge (i.e. within council tax). It's only because garden waste is specifically listed as an additional service in the relevant regs that the Council is able to charge for this.

Not exactly the same scenario but our brown bin was swiped by a neighbour just before the new scheme began - I emailed Southwark?s environmental team ([email protected]) and they sorted the delivery of a new one.

SE24 bins removed today - my green waste was collected on friday and I had filled it and was outside when the guy came past. He told me he was collecting all the bins who hadn't paid for the subscription, (i've not paid for subscription),i said thats fine but I had already filled it, he said no problem, he is going to dump it in one of the bins with a label. so this could be the reason why people are finding random green waste in their bins.

I have had my big brown bin taken but I paid for a sticker. Does anyone know who to call to get it back? Have emailed council and been passed round various departments when I call up.

Is it gone forever?!

have looked around and asked neighbours but bin still hasn't returned.

To add to our story, I caught a woman using our brown bin (an enormous black bin bag of apples). Despite telling her it wasn't a public bin and that you can't put black plastic bags in them anyway, she just shrugged her shoulders and walked off. Later I saw her drag someone else's brown bin all the way from the other end of the road and put it outside her house.

People just don't give a s**t. We're getting a hotbin.

What is a hotbin?

A very expensive type of compost bin that heats to a high temperature and therefore you can compost things youy wouldn't be able to in the usual kind.

What Sue said. They're expensive and high maintenance. But the alternative is to chuck everything into landfill. The lack of interest in the environment in one of the biggest boroughs in London is deeply depressing. Plus all the old brown bin stuff fed our parks and green spaces. That's gone now. I suppose, like my charming neighbour, the chucking of the wrong stuff in the wrong bin has become the norm. The environment is a middle class issue. Thats where we are.

Don't we already pay for brown bins in our council tax? Aren't we supposed to be encouraged to grow gardens to help the environment and a dying number of bees & other insects?

On another note what happens when the leaves fall from the trees into our gardens, do we brush these back out onto the streets & clog up the drains because this is council responsibility?

Don't we already pay for brown bins in our council tax?

You pay for the collection of kitchen waste in your council tax (that's a statutory obligation) - for which the council now provides a mid-size brown bin (kerb-side caddy). Up till June 2019 you were also paying for the collection of garden waste as part of general council tax, but that's not s statutory obligation and that inclusive service was then withdrawn by the council and replaced by a separate charge for garden waste collection - for which the large brown bins (mainly) already provided were earmarked.

do we brush these back out onto the streets & clog up the drains because this is council responsibility?

Yes - that's going to be one of the (I'm sure) unintended consequences of this change in council policy.

Quick update - I emailed this address as gummy suggested, and they replied within about a week, and a replacement brown bin arrived around 1 week after that.

    • What was he doing on the stage at Glastonbury? Or on the stage at the other concert in Finsbury Park? Grinning like a Cheshire cat whilst pissed and stoned 20 somethings on the promise of free internet sung-- Oh Jeremy Corbyn---  What were his policies for Northern mining towns with no jobs or infrastructure? Free Internet and university places for youngsters. What were his other manifesto pledges? Why all the ambiguity over Brexit?  I didn't like Thatcher, Blair or May or Tony but I respected them as politicians because they stood by what they believed in. I respect all politicians across the board that stick to their principles. Corbyn didn't and its why he got  annihilated at the polls. A socialist, anti imperialist and anti capitalist that said he voted for an imperialist and pro capitalist cabal. He refused to say how he'd vote over and over again until the last knockings. He did so to appease the Islington elite and middle class students he was courting. The same people that were screaming that Brexit was racist. At the same time the EU were holding black and Asian immigrants in refugee camps overseas but not a word on that! Corbyn created and courted a student union protest movement that screamed at and shouted down anyone not on the left . They claimed Starmer and the centre right of labour were tories. He didn't get elected  because he, his movement and policies were unelectable, twice. He turned out not to have the convictions of his politics and died on his own sword.    Reform won't win an election. All the idiots that voted for them to keep out Labour actually enabled Labour. They'll be back voting tory next time.    Farage wouldn't be able to make his millions if he was in power. He's a very devious shyster but I very much doubt he'd actually want the responsibility that governance requires.
    • The purge of hard left members that were part of Corbyn's, Mcdonnel's and Lansmans momentum that purged the party of right wing and centrist members. That's politics. It's what Blair did to win, its what Starmer had to do to win. This country doesn't vote in extreme left or right governments. That's partly why Corbyn lost  We're pretty much a centrist bunch.  It doesn't make it false either. It's an opinion based on the voting patterns, demography and statistics. Can you explain then why former mining constituencies that despise the tories voted for them or abstained rather than vote for Corbyns Labour?  What is the truth then? But he never got elected!!! Why? He should have been binned off there and then. Why he was allowed to hang about is an outrage. I hold him party responsible for the shit show that we've had to endure since.
    • Depends on what the Barista says doesnt it? There was no physical confrontation with the driver, OP thinks she is being targetted when she isnt. These guys work min wage under strict schedules so give them a break unless they damage your stuff
    • CPR Dave, attendance records are available on Southwark's website. Maggie Browning has attended 100% of meetings. Jon Hartley has attended 65%.
