What did you want to be when you were young and what do you do now?

Recommended Posts

I wanted to be a radio journalist, preferably for the Beeb, preferably for the World Service, preferably using my E Asia knowledge. It all came true, which is very good, but now I'm treading water. In my wildest dreams, I'd've been a John Simpson type, but I am not that brave and not that self-assured. Nero

I did my bit for Contour - I bought the Dell Vikings and Gospel Ayres LPs!

And what about The Hanged Man by Alan Tew from the TV Series of the same name? One of my fave funky UK LPs ever.

Anyway, wanted to be a pilot when I was seven. And a writer in my teens. Now I work in communcations and I do write a lot, but it's mostly corporate crap. But then I was previously a freelance feature writer and a magazine editor.

12 years? That's impressive! winking smiley

I enjoyed about 90% of it and made mucho dinero too!!

Piers - ahh but is that my disguise?

When I was a nipper I wanted to be a road-repair man - yellow vest, hard hat and a pneumantic drill sort of thing.

As a teenager I wanted to be a diplomat.

I now work in politics but nothing exciting.

I still want to be a diplomat, or even better, a ring announcer.

"Ladieeeeeees and Gentlemen, lets get ready to ruuuuummmmmmbbbblllleeeeeee!!!!"

Sean, maybe it's just me, but I feel no different ( attitude wise anyway) now than when I was 16. My body obviously is nothing like that of a 16 year old but in general I don't think my outlook has changed hugely. I'd like to say I'm perhaps a little more wise than I was, but I'm not sure that's true. That's becasue I have this stupid knack of making the same mistakes year in, year out. But hey, that's life.

My granddad always said I was sitting on a goldmine! ha! Now I know what he meant! Don't you ever get tempted to nip back into it just to made a quik buck or 2 on the odd occasion? That would be tempting for me especially if I was running low on funds! plus I would probably get pleasently acquainted with the amount of money I could earn, and it would become addictive I fear. So good on you for your ability to change your career and earning prospects.

I wanted to be a journalist or writer of some kind, did some body doubling in my younger years but now bored shitless in an office! Getting very well paid for it but still bored shitless nonetheless.

When I first started, watching the over 50 year olds trying to flog their wares and being rebuffed, was enough for me to never want to be in that position as I got older. As soon as I could no longer command complete respect from the clients, would have been time for me to quit. The decision was forced on me by my relapse on opiates after 13 years when I was about 32 subsequently being banged up abroad. The addiction had blurred the lines for me re sex work and I never felt the urge to go back. Instead I shagged a lot of young guys for free!

It is isn't it, "lady of the night" is much more romaticised, but there we go again, prettying things up for those feeling guilty about using the services in the first place.

Sex-worker describes what you do and incorporates male prostitutes, strippers, porn actors and others in the sex industry and is less condemnatory than, prozzy, whore, tart, rent boy or whatever other names you might prefer to call us.

    • Lost morning of 5th November between Archdale Road  and Denmark Hill station via Lordship Lane.
    • Was planning to come on here to ask if anyone might know which celeb/royal came through Lordship Lane yesterday - was on my way up to Spurs, on bus at the roundabout by the EDT when some whistling police cyclists pulled the traffic to the side of the road to allow a biggish range rover to shoot past, on the way up towards Dog Kennel Hill. Could only make out two, maybe middle-aged, men in the front before it passed. Mildly hysterical lady on pavement was laughing/screeching with her friend that they were desperately trying to find out who it was. Had more reason to post after this lunchtime's experience. Had just got to bus stop opposite the M&S by the station when some mini cooper thing bombed through the traffic, swerving across to cut up another car to get up the hill, before two or three police cars followed about 20 seconds behind. Said mini cooper thing then reappeared coming the other way, beeping its horn to get other cars out the way before it bombed up what I think was Elsie Road, with police cars now on both sides of the road by Maxin trying to stop traffic getting in the way/half the speeding car. Bit more than I had bargained for when I set out/want in local area! Stay careful out there folks, this place is getting scarier...
    • The stop outside the chippy was still closed earlier today, although the barriers I saw yesterday have been removed, so no need for the closure.  The stop outside the church across the road is now uncovered and open
    • You all have different and conflicting interests though. It isn't necessarily appropriate for him to communicate with all of you at the same time about the same issues.    You're giving more away with each post as to how these difficulties probably arose.
