Via a quick google:


Since the 18th century this has been used as a salutation to offer the hope that a happy day being marked would recur many more times. It is now primarily used on birthdays; prior to the mid 19th century it was used more generally, at any celebratory or festive event.


The first record of it in print is in a letter written by Lady Newdigate in 1789 (published in Newdigate-Newdegate Cheverels in 1898):


"Many happy returns of ye day to us my Dr Love."

    • Having work done , lots of bags of bricks to dispose of . I could make several trips on my car or get permit and go with builder in his van.  Is this allowed ? It won't be me, the. Southwark resident, driving . How much does a permit cost? Apologies Admin if United should be in the lounge.

    • CPR Dave is anti-dogs. Each to their own  I think my dog has perhaps grown a bit less nervy about the fireworks in the last few weeks, interestingly. Our last dog had no problems with them until he reached old age, when he became petrified.  CPR Dave - it's not just sounds of the metropolis they hate, mine collapses in fear when he hears thunder too
