Dulwich Hamlet FC history

I went to my first Dulwich Hamlet game yesterday, I had a read of their history later and saw that they usd to get crowds of 20,000 in the Edgar Kail days. I was wondering how this was possible, did they have a large stadium back then? Anyone got any photos?

I have seen an ariel shot fo the ground, on FA Cup day I believe, but can't remember where it was for the life of me. It looked like the White Horse final though, a sea of flat caps.

Out of interest did you then come into Hoopers after the game? I was there for the rugby.

No I went home to thaw out, it were a bit chilly on them terraces.

The old stadium was knocked down as part of the whole sainsburys malarkey. It was one of the venues of the 1948 olympics. I never got to see it but it was, from what the locals tell me, impressive if dilapidated.

The old stadium was impressive - the first time I saw it in the mid-80s it completley perplexed me I was thinking whose ground is that? can't be Millwall's, surely Palace is further away etc...it was a proper football ground....now it's the 'fresh fish' counter and lego shoe box

SO have the hamlets ever had any young starlets go on to make their fame and fortune from the game? I think I heard that Peter Crouch was loaned to Fished for a short while, but does anyone know any others. There was some chap sold to Charlton t'other day was there not?

I live next door to the Hamlets and really should go one day!

Peter Crouch was loaned to Dulwich Hamlet when he was starting out at Spurs and Ian Wright also played for the Hamlet.

Marlon King use to play for Dulwich Hamlet & is currently playing for Wigan Athletic in the premiership.

There was of course Edgar Kail ratty. Before our time I'm sure, but last amateur player to get an England cap (and score) I believe.

Charlton manager Alan Pardew used to play for Dulwich Hamlet before joining Crystal Palace. Same with Andy Gray (not the Sky pundit). And my fav player when I were a lad, Mickey Droy, was the manager there for a brief spell.

Who remembers when they regularly had All-Star charity games there? Dennis Waterman and Patrick Mower were among the star names. I can't remember who they played - was it the Hamlet 1st team, or just two teams of stars playing against each other?
