I bought a loaf of bread for ?2.50 outside the fishmongers on LL. I was given it in a brown, trendy, paper carrier bag

Since it cost me twice what I am used to paying, I thought it would taste better than what I normally buy.

The bread was hard, tough, chewy and tasted worse than the bread from the bakers opposite the library at half the price.

Has anyone else bought the bread from them and liked it?

I haven't tried the bread from the place outside Moxons (they're going to open properly where ChickenShed used to be) but their muffins were quite tasty if not amazing. 4 for ?5 wasn't exactly cheap though.


However, wordwide wheat prices have rocketed over the last twelve months so we should all be expecting to pay more for out bread in near future. In the UK, prices have soared, with bread-making wheat now fetching about ?200 per tonne - double last year's level. Plus its knock-on effects are increased meat costs due to winter feed being wheat crops - oh and the increased use of biofuels means it's gone up even more.


As a aside, the ED Deli sell their bread at half price near closing time (at least on a Friday when I went) - the sourdough was still fresh and as I was toasting it anyway it didn't really matter.

French bread I have eaten are light with thin crust and delicious but never tough & leathery

This article was in the Telegraph a couple of week's ago, and estimates it costs 74p to make a basic loaf at home.


Using your loaf


It has a few simple recipes, one of which I've tried (Doris Grant loaf - it does work without kneading but has quite a dense texture. I added sunflower seeds to the top which was yummy) and got halfway to making soda bread this morning when I realised I didn't have lemon. Will report back when I've been shopping.


I've not got on with the breadmaker so it's back to hand for me. I'm much too parsimonius to pay ?2.50 for a loaf, though I wish the bread shop well - I'll be the one with my nose pressed up against the pane, outside in the howling wind, wishing ma hadn't died in the workhouse ...

Last time I bought a loaf from EDDeli it was a date and walnut about a half size loaf.

It was sooooo delicious I ate the whole loaf that day.

No good if you're watching your waistline.

It was more than 2.50 though.


I did buy a loaf from the moxon stall and found it to be quite expensive and a bit stale. I liked the presentation but was sadly disappointed chewing it.

I haven't got time to muck about with curds and whey, this is much easier

    • Anywhere near the Overground/Windrush due to its excellent transport links.  You will get larger place in SE23 for example that will give you enough spare cash for private school if that's what you really want but states schools generally good, reflecting the demographic  Easy to get to the bustling streets of East Dulwich but in ten years see what happens to Forest Hill centre.  The whole of the area is full of green spaces. Access to East Croydon for days out in the South Coast   
    • Could East Dulwich or Forest Hill work? Some properties on Underhill Road and Wood Vale have large gardens e.g.  https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/161079866#/?channel=RES_BUY  You'd be close to the Horniman, Dulwich Park and Peckham Rye. Transport might not be what you're looking for though e.g. a 15 minute walk to Forest Hill station for the East London line or mainline into London Bridge.
    • I would leave London, or at a push move back to north London. In SE London if you want to get away in a car you are trapped, always an hour to go the first 10 miles, chugging up to the M4 or round the south circular, which is really just a line someone drew connecting a load of roads. and I know there are trains but first you have to get to those mainline stations, unless you only want to leave London to go to Kent. which I don't.

So are you now saying that wasn't "personal"? "Fire from the hip." Another interesting choice of words 🙄 I'm not "demanding" anything! I asked you some perfectly reasonable questions in  response to your own statements. None of which you have answered. Never mind. It seems to be pointless having a discussion with you.
