Hi - fairly new(ish) to Dulwich and was wondering if anyone had been to the above pub/club in Brixton? Got a few friends down for the weekend from scotland who are into dance/techno etc - saw a night on here but have never been.

Looked on a few websites and the responses are varied from ok to really crap.

If not - can anyone suggest anywhere else in SE London for a good small club night?

Cheers!

Haven't been for years. Loved it when I first moved to london, but then I was a lot younger and took drugs and danced like a loon.

Last time I went all I could think was how poor the bar service was and the cocktails weren't very good, and how it was too loud to have a good chat.

I suggest give it a go, it can do no harm and as fractionater says, you can always head up the road if it's sh!t.

*shuffles off in slippers*

Although there is a great-looking night on there on Friday... (Ok, confession time - my boy is helping to run it)

Bass Weight

I think management has changed there recently (possibly) so maybe things will improve? I've never been and so am interested to check it out on Friday.

Jamm in Brixton often has techno or some more hardcore electronic music. But that can be hit and miss too...

Hope this helps

Thanks folks! much appreciated! Going to be a tricky night to organise methinks- my mates from Glasgow love their techno and all things dance, whilst I have chilled a little in old age and my mrs detests techno.....

Personally I might just suggest going t'pub.....

Looked at Dogstar as the night mentioned techno / rock / dance / funk etc etc - so something for everyone???

Think it was called Audiosushi(?)

Liked the comment re: shuffling off in slippers lol - thats what i feel like these days! getting old......

Anything decent in Clapham?

Loads of bars up in clapham, but see my earlier post for my changing attitudes towards most of them.

Still I got my 15 year old step brother into revolution (or whatever the ersatz russian vodka bar is called) and he could barely believe it.

I had to point out that in clapham it doesn't occur to bouncers that you might be underage, as long as you're not causing trouble.

Green & Blue for a pre bar tipple? Some ok pubs there though.

OK - thanks for all the input folks - much appreciated!

Ended up having a few beers in the house, then went to the Plough (near where i live) and EDT.

Then got bus to brixton and went to a really nice little restaurant / pub called Hive - its on brixton station road out of the way and totally empty - but the food was actually really nice - and fairly cheap too. Would recommend the duck if anyone decides to go!

Then we went upstairs where there is the smallest bar known to mankind - it was a private party - but very randomly I met someone I worked with! so we stayed for one.

Then we went to Dogstar.....not really "as billed" to be honest - the place itself is OK - but was full of VERY drunk people who had been at the Good Charlotte concert (shudder)....and the DJ seemed to have a well practiced art of playing a good tune but either ruining the mix or playing the worst remix he could find....we left when the thrash metal started.... in saying that we had a good night - was fun - but not the techno fest I was looking for!

My mates really enjoyed it so thats what counts - they had been in Snoreditch the night before and said it was sh/t - full of (and I quote) - Uber-c**ts (not my words I hasten to add!) - lots of too cool for school people and fights.

Will def need to check out these other places mentioned in the future - once I recover.....

Thanks again for all the help!

Ian

    • For some strange reason, hubby likes to spend 'big' on family cards birthday and Christmas. I think it may have stemmed from his mother- she equated money with status and was a bit of a snob!  She was also quite eccentric - we asked for a suitcase one year and got a set of 4. One year she gave hubby the equivalent of a hearing aid - it was a device to hear bird song. Nobody we know send expensive cards. We have a twice yearly set of cards from the Foot and Mouth Painting Artists and have done for the last 30 plus years. I think they are around £12 for set of 10  - cannot remember what we paid this winter but they are fantastic value and beautiful paintings.  One of the best places around to buy cards is the Fair Trade Centre at Christ Church Barry Road. Fantastic selection with a starting price of £1.30.
