Well fair enough. :)-D

Its not every day I get called a racist and a liar because I dont go to some of the shops in the area I live in...

"So no one can say they don't go Peckham Rye because it smells or its dirty - it just makes me wonder what the real reason is"

Er, you've just answered your own question.

If I go to Peckham it's because I have to - to get a train as the links are good, Argos for electrical/household appliances and for some ?2 thongs from Primark!! However, it's not somewhere you'd go just for a stroll as that high street is so bloody depressing.

Unlike Rye Lane, I do not need a reason to go to Lordship Lane. I can happily walk about, sit outside and have a coffee/drink/something to eat without the smell of rotting meat and littered pavements. Am sure most people will agree and it doesn't make us all racists.

So we're all in agreement then: Rye Lane is dirty and it smells*

*Like lots of other places in London but then we're not talking about them we're talking about Rye Lane.

yes, Southwark Council should 'Febreze' it!

In my opinion not that dodgy. I think that you were extremely unlucky to have witnessed the amount of street drug activity in such a short time. Though I think on first visits to an area one tends to be a bit twitchy. I'm sure that if you made a few repeat visits you would feel more relaxed walking the streets. Saying that it's hardly a drug free zone. My nine year old was having a yard sale in the area with a friend when they were approached by two men whom she described "as very skinny with missing teeth and spots" who asked if they could "borrow" a tenner, so it certainly ain't the mythical land of estateagenteese. If you had made your visit on a Sunday morning on the other hand you may have got an entirely different impression as the streets are populated by the devout, besuited, behatted or in traditional dress. In short I'd say it's a diverse area and the main quality you'll need to make a life there is an open mind.

Apologies for any personal comments I made.

I still think Peckham is a nice area. Also agree it can be rough - especially the north part where you have gangs. Bellenden area is fine.

There is always the bus to Blackfriers from Honor Oak- but it takes forever.

JJF - I never implied that anyone was racist - just making that clear

Keef - I wouldn't go as far as Sydenham to compare houses, the houses there are whack.

is that here, here - meaning east dulwich?

this thread really is a bore with people on both sides running the opposing arguments to illogical extremes, (deliberately?) misinterpreting eachother and speaking on behalf to too many others rather than just themselves - e.g. 'not somewhere YOU'D go' above whereas they mean 'not somewhere I'D go' and 'MOST people would agree' when they mean 'MOST people I KNOW would agree'

is racism a part of it? i dunno, but i think that being prejudiced doesn't require you to hate all or any other ethnic groups, it just requires an element of 'prejudgement' so you expect something different (or worse?) of another group than you would expect from your own, even when that is based on fact - so more people are perhaps guilty than would consider them selves to be racists

what the hell is the problem with these bloody people banging on about racism. FOR THE LOVE OF CHRIST.......stop making a mountain out of a mole hill.

I said that Peckham was grubby and dirty and needed some TLC, as did many other people!

Some people could start an argument in am empty room.

As a new person to this forum I can't believe the debate I have just ploughed through concerning Rye Lane. I live just off Bellenden Road and East Dulwich was where I grew up and went to school (JAGS). Back then in the 80's and early 90's East Dulwich was a "dump". I have now returned to find it cleaned up and full of nouveau riche types from other parts of London. Peckham and Rye lane was a slighter smarter place with lots of shops and a thriving mixed community. Now it has been taken over by the market vendors and cheap shops, it is certainly vibrant and during trading hours noisy and dirty as all markets are; but dangerous?!

As a Londoner born and bred I have lived in just about every corner of this city and one thing never changes. Any town with an ethnic presence is labelled dangerous and undesirable. There are many people in this country and on this forum who have racism inbedded within them and they don't know it. They spout their ignorance in pubs and at dinner parties and get away with it because most people belong to that huge club which is the silent majority, the ones who pretend that nasty things are not being done and said on their doorstep and thus they enable it.

I have seen white people on Rye Lane recoil because a black person has brushed against them and then seen those same people on Lordship Lane pretending not to notice the group of foul yobs outside the EDT vomiting in the gutter.

To the person who started this debate, move to Peckham, if you are worldly wise enough to know a drug deal when you see one or can tell when someone is smoking Heroin, you can clearly take care of yourself and can live anywhere.

As for the rest of you and you know who you are, yes YOU ARE RACIST but you already know that hence the indignant babbling. Grow up and put your time and energy towards helping the hundreds of black kids who attempt suicide every month no doubt because they are fed up with being told who they are and what the area they live in is like (ie a dangerous dump full of dodgy characters). Look in the mirror and realise that in 2008 one of the hottest debates on TV is the fact that a mixed race man ( dubbed Black by Whites across the Western world as are all people who have one white and one black parent - no agenda there I'm sure) is running for President of the USA. "Oooh do you think he'll win" you all ponder over your pints of cider but not one of you has the soul to ask why has it taken so long for this to happen. Maybe its because so many of you still think and talk like those nasty hood wearing types someone saw fit to make a crass joke about. Just because you speak in code and use different words doesn't mean you're not one of them. Every time I see a police car on Lordship Lane its to break up a fight and that is nearly every week. Normal people know and understand that every area has nice parts and rough bits and everywhere has crime. Choose your postcode and someone will be able to show you a corner where yobs of all ages and colours gather to make a nuisance of themselves and break the law. Anyone who says different about any particular place is an ignorant fool with an agenda.

Please ... no sniffy and defensive retorts you only embarrass yourselves just grow up.

Yellowdee, I appreciate that it is you first post but, as I have previously requested, please refrain from insulting people on this thread. Please feel free to start another thread in the Lounge about what racism means to you.

Thank you.

Quite right. Bishopsthorpe/Queensthorpe/Dukesthorpe etc and Mayow Road and Cator Road have stunning houses. (Had to step in and defend SE26!)

Can I also point out that if you do decide to live in the area of Peckham that is now called Bellenden, and for whatever reason you want to avoid Rye Lane, it is highly likely that you will be closer to Lordship Lane/East Dulwich Station/Denmark Hill Station/Sainsburys than a lot of people living in East Dulwich!

typical example of what i was talking about - a response to a post that didn't try to think about the preceding post, rather jumped to an immediate conclusion - not trying to start an argument or making arrogant statements about 'bloody people' just trying to express an opinion

i wasn't calling you a racist - to you i was pointing out that you don't know how to spell 'hear, hear' (and can't be bothered to check despite the fact that you're sat on the internet)

my comments re racism were about the wider thread, but guess that you're not open to others' opinions

Bloody hell Yellowdee that is quite an introduction to the forum!

I agree with your initial points about Peckham and East Dulwich a few years back, I'm from here too.

As for

"As for the rest of you and you know who you are, yes YOU ARE RACIST but you already know that hence the indignant babbling.",

I don't know if I'm one of those at whom that's directed, as I was involved in the "debate", but that's like saying you can accuse anyone of anything, and if they defend themselves because they're a bit annoyed at an accusation, it's just proof that the initial accusation was true. That makes no sense!

I am also loving

"Please ... no sniffy and defensive retorts you only embarrass yourselves just grow up.".

It kind of reminds me of saying whatever you like to someone you don't know at all then sticking fingers in your ears and going something like "La la la la la la la la la la".

Man this is the first thread I have gotten involved with in the main section of the forum for months. I'm off back to the lounge to talk about football, it's safer there.

As I said before, if it was just a matter of calling Peckham Rye grubby or messy, as I said you could understand that, all markets are the same the world over, but I don't actually currently have the time to trawl through every post and actually quote the various terms and comments I have heard used to describe it, basically "e-coli ridden", "stinking", "smelly" etc. the list goes on, "normal" shops! "I wouldn't shop there" walk there, etc. or its just that people from East Dulwich would have no need to shop there, i.e. they are white and have no need for ethnic shops, foods, clothing, anything??? Come on guyz, you've got to get it, tell me you are not sooooo ignorant as to not see why people would get upset?

It's exactly like that Keef. The Violet Elizabeth Bott revival starts here.

    • I mean I hold no portfolio to defend Gala,  but I suspect that is their office.  I am a company director,  my home address is also not registered with Companies House. Also guys this is Peckham not Royston Vasey.  Shoreditch is a mere 20 mins away by train, it's not an offshore bolt hole in Luxembourg.
    • While it is good that GALA have withdrawn their application for a second weekend, local people and councillors will likely have the same fight on their hands for next year's event. In reading the consultation report, I noted the Council were putting the GALA event in the same light as all the other events that use the park, like the Circus, the Fair and even the FOPR fete. ALL of those events use the common, not the park, and cause nothing like the level of noise and/or disruption of the GALA event. Even the two day Irish Festival (for those that remember that one) was never as noisy as GALA. So there is some disingenuity and hypocrisy from the Council on this, something I wll point out in my response to the report. The other point to note was that in past years branches were cut back for the fencing. Last year the council promised no trees would be cut after pushback, but they seem to now be reverting to a position of 'only in agreement with the council's arbourist'. Is this more hypocrisy from 'green' Southwark who seem to once again be ok with defacing trees for a fence that is up for just days? The people who now own GALA don't live in this area. GALA as an event began in Brockwell Park. It then lost its place there to bigger events (that pesumably could pay Lambeth Council more). One of the then company directors lived on the Rye Hill Estate next to the park and that is likely how Peckham Rye came to be the new choice for the event. That person is no longer involved. Today's GALA company is not the same as the 'We Are the Fair' company that held that first event, not the same in scope, aim or culture. And therein lies the problem. It's not a local community led enterprise, but a commercial one, underwritten by a venture capital company. The same company co-run the Rally Event each year in Southwark Park, which btw is licensed as a one day event only. That does seem to be truer to the original 'We Are the Fair' vision, but how much of that is down to GALA as opoosed to 'Bird on the Wire' (the other group organising it) is hard to say.  For local people, it's three days of not being able to open windows, As someone said above, if a resident set up a PA in their back garden and subjected the neighbours to 10 hours of hard dance music every day for three days, the Council would take action. Do not underestimate how distressing that is for many local residents, many of whom are elderly, frail, young, vulnerable. They deserve more respect than is being shown by those who think it's no big deal. And just to be clear, GALA and the council do not consider there to be a breach of db level if the level is corrected within 15 minutes of the breach. In other words, while db levels are set as part of the noise management plan, there is an acknowledgement that a breach is ok if corrected within 15 minutes. That is just not good enough. Local councillors objected to the proposed extension. 75% of those that responded to the consultation locally did not want GALA 26 to take place at all. For me personally, any goodwill that had been built up through the various consultations over recent years was erased with that application for a second weekend, and especially given that when asked if there were plans for that in post 2025 event feedback meetings (following rumours), GALA lied and said there were no plans to expand. I have come to the conclusion that all the effort to appease on some things is merely an exercise in show, to get past the council's threshold for the events licence. They couldn't give a hoot in reality for local people, and people that genuinely care about parkland, don't litter it with noisy festivals either.
