Peckham Rye - how dodgy is it?

If I go to Peckham it's because I have to - to get a train as the links are good, Argos for electrical/household appliances and for some ?2 thongs from Primark!! However, it's not somewhere you'd go just for a stroll as that high street is so bloody depressing.

Unlike Rye Lane, I do not need a reason to go to Lordship Lane. I can happily walk about, sit outside and have a coffee/drink/something to eat without the smell of rotting meat and littered pavements. Am sure most people will agree and it doesn't make us all racists.

In my opinion not that dodgy. I think that you were extremely unlucky to have witnessed the amount of street drug activity in such a short time. Though I think on first visits to an area one tends to be a bit twitchy. I'm sure that if you made a few repeat visits you would feel more relaxed walking the streets. Saying that it's hardly a drug free zone. My nine year old was having a yard sale in the area with a friend when they were approached by two men whom she described "as very skinny with missing teeth and spots" who asked if they could "borrow" a tenner, so it certainly ain't the mythical land of estateagenteese. If you had made your visit on a Sunday morning on the other hand you may have got an entirely different impression as the streets are populated by the devout, besuited, behatted or in traditional dress. In short I'd say it's a diverse area and the main quality you'll need to make a life there is an open mind.

I still think Peckham is a nice area. Also agree it can be rough - especially the north part where you have gangs. Bellenden area is fine.

There is always the bus to Blackfriers from Honor Oak- but it takes forever.

this thread really is a bore with people on both sides running the opposing arguments to illogical extremes, (deliberately?) misinterpreting eachother and speaking on behalf to too many others rather than just themselves - e.g. 'not somewhere YOU'D go' above whereas they mean 'not somewhere I'D go' and 'MOST people would agree' when they mean 'MOST people I KNOW would agree'

is racism a part of it? i dunno, but i think that being prejudiced doesn't require you to hate all or any other ethnic groups, it just requires an element of 'prejudgement' so you expect something different (or worse?) of another group than you would expect from your own, even when that is based on fact - so more people are perhaps guilty than would consider them selves to be racists

As a new person to this forum I can't believe the debate I have just ploughed through concerning Rye Lane. I live just off Bellenden Road and East Dulwich was where I grew up and went to school (JAGS). Back then in the 80's and early 90's East Dulwich was a "dump". I have now returned to find it cleaned up and full of nouveau riche types from other parts of London. Peckham and Rye lane was a slighter smarter place with lots of shops and a thriving mixed community. Now it has been taken over by the market vendors and cheap shops, it is certainly vibrant and during trading hours noisy and dirty as all markets are; but dangerous?!

As a Londoner born and bred I have lived in just about every corner of this city and one thing never changes. Any town with an ethnic presence is labelled dangerous and undesirable. There are many people in this country and on this forum who have racism inbedded within them and they don't know it. They spout their ignorance in pubs and at dinner parties and get away with it because most people belong to that huge club which is the silent majority, the ones who pretend that nasty things are not being done and said on their doorstep and thus they enable it.

I have seen white people on Rye Lane recoil because a black person has brushed against them and then seen those same people on Lordship Lane pretending not to notice the group of foul yobs outside the EDT vomiting in the gutter.

To the person who started this debate, move to Peckham, if you are worldly wise enough to know a drug deal when you see one or can tell when someone is smoking Heroin, you can clearly take care of yourself and can live anywhere.

As for the rest of you and you know who you are, yes YOU ARE RACIST but you already know that hence the indignant babbling. Grow up and put your time and energy towards helping the hundreds of black kids who attempt suicide every month no doubt because they are fed up with being told who they are and what the area they live in is like (ie a dangerous dump full of dodgy characters). Look in the mirror and realise that in 2008 one of the hottest debates on TV is the fact that a mixed race man ( dubbed Black by Whites across the Western world as are all people who have one white and one black parent - no agenda there I'm sure) is running for President of the USA. "Oooh do you think he'll win" you all ponder over your pints of cider but not one of you has the soul to ask why has it taken so long for this to happen. Maybe its because so many of you still think and talk like those nasty hood wearing types someone saw fit to make a crass joke about. Just because you speak in code and use different words doesn't mean you're not one of them. Every time I see a police car on Lordship Lane its to break up a fight and that is nearly every week. Normal people know and understand that every area has nice parts and rough bits and everywhere has crime. Choose your postcode and someone will be able to show you a corner where yobs of all ages and colours gather to make a nuisance of themselves and break the law. Anyone who says different about any particular place is an ignorant fool with an agenda.

Can I also point out that if you do decide to live in the area of Peckham that is now called Bellenden, and for whatever reason you want to avoid Rye Lane, it is highly likely that you will be closer to Lordship Lane/East Dulwich Station/Denmark Hill Station/Sainsburys than a lot of people living in East Dulwich!

I don't know if I'm one of those at whom that's directed, as I was involved in the "debate", but that's like saying you can accuse anyone of anything, and if they defend themselves because they're a bit annoyed at an accusation, it's just proof that the initial accusation was true. As I said before, if it was just a matter of calling Peckham Rye grubby or messy, as I said you could understand that, all markets are the same the world over, but I don't actually currently have the time to trawl through every post and actually quote the various terms and comments I have heard used to describe it, basically "e-coli ridden", "stinking", "smelly" etc. the list goes on, "normal" shops! "I wouldn't shop there" walk there, etc. or its just that people from East Dulwich would have no need to shop there, i.e. they are white and have no need for ethnic shops, foods, clothing, anything???
