I saw it this weekend. It was a very good film. So was the Casino Royal for that matter.

But neither of them are as good as Die Another Day. Let me explain why.

Brooding, depressive bloke = Not particularly impressive. In fact you can probably find one in any given pub on any given night who will gladly bore you stupid with his tales of lost love and unfair consequence. The words, Boo fucking hoo, spring to mind.

However

Space mirror aimed at the earth to melt the polar icecaps = impressive

Evil henchman with diamonds in his face = impressive

Ice palace which explodes in the end = impressive

Hali Berry (spelling?) in a bikini = impressive

Aston Martin with red pointed rockets = impressive

Comic book style cinematography = impressive

Villain driven mad with obsession and world domination = impressive

Car chase on ice = impressive

Implausible gadgets = impressive

The way James Bond manages to keep his suit clean through all this = impressive

etc

etc

etc

Yeah, but the kite-surfing on the bonnet of a snowmobile was, frankly, wank. Poor CGI and just that little bit too far on the wrong side of ridiculous.

And the dialogue between Halle and Pierce in their opening scene was so embarrassing it made me want to tear my own teeth out.

I agree whole heartedly with you Moos, Die Another Day was my least favouite Bond movie for exactly these reasons. I ddn't dig the invisible "We call it the Vanish" Aston Martin either. Pierce had his moments admittedly, but Mr Craig's performances as Bond have made the previous ten films rather forgetable.

I've never been a massive Bond fan, enjoy them, but don't rush to see them. I thought that both Timothy Dalton (under rated) and Pierce Brosnon did their best film firt. Living Daylights was good, and I really liked Goldeneye, but after that I thought they just got a bit too silly.

Favourites before that would include View to a kill, From Russia with love, and You only live twice.

That's a very good point. Plus Dr. No and Goldfinger were, for me, the best Connery fillums. What was the first Moore Bond?

Live & Let die is correct. It is also one of the best ever cover versions of a song (Guns N' Roses).

I always thought George Lazenby was in bbetween Connery & Moore, but actually Connery came back and did Diamonds are forever after Lazenby's On HM's secret service.

    • It has come to this author’s attention that the world of 4+ admissions — that most enigmatic of educational rites — continues to bewilder even the most composed of parents. Fear not. For in a former life, I was not merely a humble observer, but a seasoned educator of over twenty years, and Head of Pre-Prep for a distinguished dozen. Now, with quill exchanged for touchscreen, I have taken to that most modern of salons — Instagram — to dispense guidance, answer frequently whispered questions, and illuminate the shadowy corners of school selection with clarity and calm. Each post bears my signature twist: a blend of insight, levity, and the occasional raised eyebrow. Should you find yourself adrift in the sea of admissions, I suggest you peruse my latest dispatch. • Perhaps Gooseygreeny was not familiar with the wildlife before Gala was imposed on the park, since when its value to wildlife has deteriorated. The Park had never been disturbed before, as the council had respected it as a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation, so only the Common was licensed by them as a site for events. The first time Gala held their event, there was a tree with woodpeckers nesting in it right in the middle of the main field they used and thrushes, blackbirds and great tits nesting within the shrubs and trees immediately surrounding the field. The woodpeckers were thriving on ants from the anthills in the grass. To those of us who used to enjoy watching the wildlife, it was very obviously a Site of Importance for a variety of birds. Despite being accessed by the public and their dogs, it had been relatively undisturbed,  which was one of the main reasons why it was so special and why I have been opposed to the Gala festival being held during the bird nesting season.
    • So dangerous!    Can you be more specific about the road this was in and when you report it?  Maybe there’s some CCTV footage available
