aquarius moon
Am I the only one who never goes on holiday?I have my reasons for not doing so but haven't been anywhere for 8 years and then it was only in the UK.Are there people in the same boat who, for whatever reasons are spending their summer in Peckham or ED & and quite happy/have no choice to be here, rather than on holiday?Would be nice to know I'm not alone. Robert Poste's Child
I haven't had a proper holiday in ages but it's not really by choice, usually either no time or no money. I'm better when I have someone to go with but struggle when it's just me. I did try the Companions to Travel website once but I got fed up of being contacted by men who weren't planning to tell their wives they were going away... Hoping to sort myself out with a proper trip later this year though. uncleglen
I stay in the UK- I love it. Only ever go self catering, caravan or camping for 1 week. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/45950-the-anti-holiday-thread/#findComment-758315 Share on other sites

Robert Poste's Child
There's a lot to be said for being able to sleep in your own bed, not having to go through an airport and not having to pack. If you have a car I think day trips could be a good alternative. How far have you managed to get in a day? Otta
We can't afford it either. We are getting a few nights in a caravan because my dad paid for a Sun holiday (the shame), but other than that we try to visit friends just to get away, but even then fares can be too much. Otta
No shame in a sun holiday as such. I just hate The Sun. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/45950-the-anti-holiday-thread/#findComment-758344 Share on other sites
LadyDeliah
I try to get away as much as I can, but had my first holiday without kids in 14 years last year, after a pretty long spell without any holiday at all.I want a couple of weeks off this summer, but have too much going on to get away, so I'll probably be in London for the summer :-(I used to travel a lot but time and lack of money make it difficult now. El Pibe
We've spent a small fortune on travel to and from the republic over the last three years, and don't think i've been on a proper holiday (rather than weekend break) since we've had kids. This year is visiting folk in the uk for a week, but hopefully next year we'll be able to think about something more adventurous. Jeremy
Not being able to go on holiday is one thing (especially with kids, costs really start to rack up, and going away is crazy expensive during school holidays). But specifically choosing to avoid going abroad... I think that's a bit of a shame. Pets can be a problem. JohnL
Every time I get on a plane something strange happens.usually starts with "Is there meant to be this much turbulence""Sir, I'm afraid we're due a lot more"Enjoyed Egypt, Greece, Spain and France - but only once in 5 or 6 years.aquarius moon Wrote:-------------------------------------------------------> Am I the only one who never goes on holiday?> > I have my reasons for not doing so but haven't> been anywhere for 8 years and then it was only in> the UK.> > Are there people in the same boat who, for> whatever reasons are spending their summer in> Peckham or ED & and quite happy/have no choice to> be here, rather than on holiday?> > Would be nice to know I'm not alone. KidKruger
I took the tribe to a resort in Grand Canaria last year, the cost of flights was > than resort cost for 5 of us by a country mile. I've spent years preferring 'travelling' but the whole all-inclusive resort thing seemed just easier / less stressful with the KK-ettes.We had a blast, but the fact that the flights were 8x cost of exact equivalents either two weeks before or after the half-term breaks left a bad taste in my mouth.Whether I can afford or not is for me a moot point when dealing with such blatant pricing, so I'll be choosing to stay in UK a few years for family hols, unless the rules change on when you can take kids away from school.UK has great locations and people are sound. womanofdulwich
For the first 16 years of my life holiday was going to Derbyshire for a week or 2 every year to see relatives.Luckily all the relatives lived in Derbyshire so it was a one hit does all. We really looked forward to it . My children have had holiday trips to Norfolk and Glasgow every year for the first 10 -15 years of their lives too. As grandparents have died, and the children become teenagers ( and childcare costs have disappeared), we have managed to coerce the granddads to come to us /with us sometimes, so in more recent years we have had a week or two somewhere abroad. However, I do think staying in your own bed and having long day trips out is a pretty stress free holiday.(Especially if you buy ready meals/ eat out) Dulwich during the school summer holidays is perfect, so quiet, little traffic. Jah Lush
You're not alone, AM. I've not had a proper holiday in... well, I'm a little embarrassed to say really. I don't like going on my own and I know in the past most of my friends have felt that if they came away with me they'd be hospitalised with alcoholic poisoning. That certainly wouldn't be the case now as there is no way I can handle the sauce like I used to.The last time I had any sort of trip abroad was to see the Rolling Stones in the south of France six years ago but that was for only three or four days and I travelled with my younger brother (it was a treat for his 40th birthday) and we stayed with friends who have a house nearby. I am however, hoping to get to Portugal for a long weekend in September. My niece and her husband are currently living there so I'm sorted for somewhere to stay and have lovely people to hang out with. Jeremy
I've travelled on my own before and really enjoyed it. But it does help if you know a few people along the way you can visit or meet up with. aquarius moon
On the few occasions I've been away in the past, I've found the whole experience so stressful (not knowing what to pack, worrying that the house is OK, worrying that my pets are OK, wherever they happened to be) and tiring (too many late nights & early mornings, too much walking, way too much alcohol), I've always felt the need for another week off work when I returned, just to recover! To all those who have contributed to this thread & are going away this year (even if it's only for a weekend Jah), I hope you have a wonderful time.To everybody else, just think: You won't be spending any money, you won't have the stresses & strains caused by travelling & worries about what's going on at home. You won't suffer with 'holiday tummy'.Best of all, you will be sleeping in your own bed. Bliss! MrBen
Really like staying at home in Dulwich during the school holidays and bank hols. Less queue's, quieter trains/buses in and generally more chilled out at weekends. A bit like how it used to be 10 years ago.
